Even as Disney World reopens and the Florida state government was being pushed to host in-person classes for the fall school semester, the Sunshine State is setting new records for Covid-19 cases.
The Florida Department of Health reported 15,299 new coronavirus cases Sunday. That’s the highest total for any state since the pandemic started. Florida holds the dubious record for second-highest as well, coming in with 11, 434 new cases on July 4, per Johns Hopkins University.
Florida’s test positivity rate is a whopping 19.60%, Johns Hopkins said. Florida Rep. Donna Shalala said the virus is “out of control,” and said it’s likely a second economic shutdown looms.
“It’s out of control across the state because our governor won’t even tell everybody to wear masks. At least in Miami-Dade county, everyone must wear a mask when they’re outside,” she told CNN Saturday night. “This is an American tragedy.”

Updated with details, 7:29 Pm: The House of Representatives impeached President Donald Trump on Wednesday, a historic and expected rebuke related to his conduct toward Ukraine. The House approved one article, for abuse of power, in a vote of 230-197, with one Democrat, presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, voting “present.” The House also approved a second article of impeachment, for obstruction of Congress, in a vote of 229-198, with Gabbard also voting present. Only two other presidents have been impeached in U.S. history: Andrew Johnson in 1868, and Bill Clinton in 1998. Richard Nixon resigned in 1974 before the full House could vote on articles of impeachment. At a campaign rally in Battle Creek, Mi, Trump reacted to his impeachment. “Every single Republican voted for us,” Trump told the crowd. “So we had 198, 229, 198. We didn’t lose one Republican vote.” He then attacked a litany of Democrats.

The street is blocked off south of Bethel A.M.E. Church. Young marching-band members clog the road, reviewing their formations. Majorettes take their final stretches, wearing outfits designed to sparkle in the sun. Band members blow out their last practice notes. There are a few white folks sprinkled throughout the crowd, but approaching the campus, it’s clear that Homecoming Day at Florida A&M University might be the blackest place possible to meet Andrew Gillum.

Dear readers; today is the day that I walk across a stage and shake hands with Donna Shalala to signify that I have completed the coursework required to earn my Masters degree from the University of Miami. I won't be receiving the Actual degree for another few weeks, but there are so many places in life where appearances are what matter and according to my family who have come to Miami to watch those ten seconds happen, this is one of those times. Besides, fetching the mail is never a good excuse to buy a fancy new dress and shoes and send out announcements. In fact, this column will be posted right around the time my commencement ceremony wraps up, so if you're feeling generous please spare a thought for me and the difficult job search that's in my immediate future. Also, I really hope the world doesn't end on...
