Ram Gopal Varma is one of India's most prominent independent filmmakers over the last two decades. From his start with films like the Telugu crime classic Shiva through his Hindi gangster epic Company in the early part of the 21st century, Varma blazed an edgy trail through Indian genre cinema that encouraged and nurtured the careers of many who came after him. No less than the godfather of Indian Independent cinema himself, Anurag Kashyap, got his big break by writing Rgv's Satya over a decade ago. However, the last several years have been rough for Rgv.After a string of a dozen or more massive flops in multiple languages, Ram Gopal Varma has become associated with box office and critical failure. Even his highest profile ventures...

Ram Gopal Varma is director known for his hard-hitting dramas with tense story lines, action and of course incredible performances from the actors in the film. You have seen his work in the brilliant Company, the Sarkar films, Satya and so many more. As a director he likes to explore the darker side of life and present it in a really cool and very compelling dramatic way. For Department, which released today, he turned his lens, well several lenses, on the police and the power struggles within when they create a new unit to combat crime. The films stars two of the biggest and best Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjay Dutt and a young actor who is following in their footsteps with some powerful performances, Rana Daggubati. We were able to catch Mr. Varma for a very quick chat about Department.

One of contemporary Hindi cinema’s most inventive filmmakers, Ram Gopal Varma, unites a who’s who of cross-generational acting heavyweights in his latest piece of cinematic artistry, Department, opening its doors in the UK on 18th May 2012 through B4U Pictures and presented by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures.
With all the markings of another classic and following the tradition of earlier superhits such as Company, Sarkar and Sarkar Raj, Varma takes audiences on another rollercoaster ride to the dark side – this time into the guarded inner echelons of the police ‘department’, where the unnerving power struggles quickly separate the men from the boys.
Testifying the film’s thematic mantra that ‘Real Power Comes From Real Men’, Department features acting heavyweights that transcend the generations as veteran actors Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjay Dutt appear alongside Tamil artist and rising star of Hindi cinema, Rana Daggubati. Not for the faint-hearted, the film...

Mumbai, April 19: A lot of southern Indian actors may be making their way to Bollywood but veteran actor Mohanlal is happy doing Hindi films only once in a while and says he agrees to only "irresistible" roles.
The actor, who has dedicated over three decades to the Malayalam film industry, made his Bollywood debut with Ram Gopal Varma's "Company" in 2002. He was later seen in Varma's "Aag" and will now be seen in a cameo in Priyadarshan's "Tezz".
Despite many offers, Mohanlal wanted to be selective and to choose good roles.
" 'Company' was an irresistible role for me. A couple of (Bollywood) scripts came to me after.

Ram Gopal Varma.s past few projects have failed to rock the box office, but actor Rana Daggubati, who has teamed up with the director in .Department., is confident that the film will turn out to be one of his most stylish movies..Ramu (Varma) dabbles in a lot of genres of films. He is very good with his work, and has a wonderful storytelling pattern, which is most often trendsetting. His film .Satya. broke stereotype, and .Company. gave Vivek Oberoi such a great launchpad.I think .Department. will be one of his most stylish film ever shot,. Rana told Ians.In .Department., the southern star will be seen as a grungy policeman - a role that was earlier reserved for Abhishek Bachchan. The film.s characters include a don, a gangster, a gangster-turned-politician, and shootout specialists. No wonder it was exciting for Rana to work in it!.I think...

Which demons could possibly provoke two normal healthy ambitious young people to kill a man, cut his limbs into several pieces and attempt to dispose of his body in the thick jungles?
Not A Love Story attempts to unravel the abiding mystery of human nature and the extreme measures it resorts to when pushed to the brink. This is the frightening sobering life-changing story of Anusha Chawla (Mahie Gill) a small-town girl with big Bollywood dreams who ends up being an accomplice in a gruesome crime that leaves everyone who knows her aghast.
We certainly are left open-mouthed.
Indeed it is the normalcy of Anusha’s dreams and how drastically they get subverted within the time-frame of a few decisive days, that forms the core of the compelling often repugnant but always riveting crime drama.
Ramu’s camera is frequently more frenziedly crazy than the deeds of the protagonists. The...

“The biggest problem for documentary filmmakers in India is distribution. There is hardly any formal set-up for distribution and exhibition of documentaries in an organized manner. For that reason, filmmakers have to wear many caps simultaneously.”
Indian documentaries garner acclaim and awards at international film festivals but find little success when it comes to braving the distribution chain to reach the common audiences in India. Think about watching a documentary and one can only think of screenings at some select cultural hubs or college campuses. The notion that documentary films have few takers is fast changing, but has that made documentary filmmaking and distribution a less inconvenient and more commercially viable option?
Saba Dewan is a Delhi based filmmaker whose documentaries Dharmayuddha (Holy War, 1989), Nasoor (Festering Wound, 1991), Khel (The Play, 1994), Barf (Snow, 1997), Sita’s Family (2001), Delhi-Mumbai-Delhi (2006) and Naach (The Dance, 2008)have been screened in several Indian and international film festivals.

Jimmy Sheirgill is readying for the release of his first ever horror film, A Flat. Though he has earlier been seen in Chodhon Naa Yaar (which again belonged to horror genre), he insists that A Flat is far more complete and is one movie which truly belongs to the horror genre. However, one can't deny the fact that the film carries an uncanny resemblance with Bhoot, the Ajay Devgn-Urmila Matondkar starrer, which was again set in a flat in upmarket Mumbai."The only thing similar between our film and the Ram Gopal Varma directed Bhoot is that both have been set in an apartment," says Jimmy who has now gone ultra selective in his choice of Hindi films, "Other than that, there is absolutely no connection between the two films."Continuing with his denial, Jimmy shares his reasoning, "While the storylines of both the films are different,...

Human Target is finally here! I’ve been waiting with bated breath for this day, and now I can say this: it’s my pleasure to bring you an advance review of the second-season opener, “Ilsa Pucci,” and officially kick off the next chapter of TV’s greatest thrill ride.
The burning question for Human Target fans over the hiatus was how much the addition of new regulars Ilsa (Indira Varma, Luther) and Ames (Janet Montgomery, Entourage) would upset the perfect dynamic between Chance, Winston and Guerrero. The answer to that is not yet, and maybe, in that order. Varma is somewhat channeling Torchwood‘s Suzie Costello here, with a bit of an ego and a snarky remark at hand, but despite the episode bearing her character’s name, doesn’t overshadow Chance and Company. The question is if her constant bickering and bantering with Mark Valley is going to...

We’re talking about Ram Gopal Varma’s film Department, a follow-up to Company (2002) and a prequel to Ab Tak Chappan (2004). Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgn and Abhishek Bachchan have already been confirmed to play the roles of men in uniform. Now Amitabh Bachchan has also been roped in to play a senior cop.Buzz is that the film revolves around four encounter specialists who fall apart following a war between the underworld dons who they owe their allegiance to. Varma apparently found his muses in real life ...

The Hindi box office will soon be laden with sequels like 'Race 2', 'Don 2' and the third instalments of 'Dhoom', 'Golmaal' and 'Phoonk' as Bollywood walks in Hollywood's footsteps to make filmmakers feel secure and keep a captive audience in good cheer.'It is a commercial decision. If something works and you can continue the same story, why not bring it back again with the same theme and energy?' Karan Johar told Ians.'As long as you make it exciting for people, the idea works,' said the filmmaker, who is producing the sequel of his Abhishek Bachchan-John Abraham-starrer hit 'Dostana'.Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma said: 'It is not about following Hollywood. These days in Bollywood, everyone thinks in terms of only sequels. One spends so much money and effort in creating a brand; so it makes...

When Mani Ratnam was chalking out the shooting schedule for the Hindi version of Raavan, he got a brainwave. The talented filmmaker already had the lights, camera and dates of actors in place. So it seemed wise to make the Tamil version alongside.to save time and make optimum use of resources available. This worked out well even for actors who feature in both the versions. Aishwarya Rai says, "On the sets, I used to first give my Hindi shot and then the Tamil one." She found it easier to emote in Tamil, once she had understood the lines in Hindi.Ratnam is not the only one to adopt such pragmatism. Ram Gopal Varma too has joined the brigade. He has shot his two-part biopic Rakhta Charitra in three languages.Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Similarly, Sudipto Sen plans to make a bilingual film Amrit Kumbh, aka In Search of Immortality,...

Starring Ajay Devgan, Vivek Oberoi, Manisha Koirala, Antara Mali
Indians love mob movies as much as Americans do—partly because both of our countries unfortunately have a history of thriving organized crime—to the point where stories about the mob have become a kind of mythology, and Bollywood's robust gangster genre is the one that bears the most similarity to Hollywood. In both countries, those films are made in the same gritty style.
There are some key differences, however. Musical numbers, for one. Although they're rare in Bollywood mob movies, they do pop up sometimes, in a surprisingly fitting way. But perhaps that isn't such a difference after all—musical sequences are prominent in many American mob movies, from 'The Godfather' (1972) to 'The Departed' (2006).
Another crucial variation comes from the slang used to describe criminal syndicates. In the U.S., they're often called "families" or "gangs,...
