Ridley Scott’s director’s cut of his 2023 historical epic Napoleon has landed on Apple TV+.
Apple Original Films has released a new version with 48 minutes of never-before-seen footage from the Oscar-nominated tentpole. Napoleon: The Director’s Cut stars Joaquin Phoenix as the French emperor and dives deeper into the origins and ascent of the military leader through the prism of his often volatile relationship with his wife, Josephine, played by Vanessa Kirby.
The director’s cut also focuses on Josephine’s own origin story with what Apple promises are more extravagant costumes, new larger-than-life sets and the previously unreleased Battle of Marengo scene. Anyone looking to pick a fight with Gladiator II‘s Pedro Pascal may want to think again, according to his co-star Paul Mescal, who speaks about the actor’s physical prowess in a new interview with Empire.
“I think I’d win in a fight between me and Pedro, but he’s deceptive,” said Mescal. “Pedro is one of the funniest men that I know, but he could f**k s**t up. Like, absolutely categorically. There’s a beast in there for sure.”
Mescal’s comments echo those of Pascal, who in an earlier interview with Vanity Fair, said he came to refer to his co-star as “Brick Wall Paul.”
“He got so strong,” recalled the actor. “I would rather be thrown from a building than have to fight him again. To go up against somebody that fit and that talented and that much younger….”

Paramount Pictures on Monday debuted the first poster for Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, slated for release on November 22, which sees Paul Mescal prepare for battle. Check out the images below.
In the film following up Scott’s classic historical epic from 2000, which won five Oscars from 11 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe, Mescal plays Lucius, son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) — the second daughter of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius — who now is a grown man in a story taking place years after the first film ended. As you’ll recall, Lucius is also the nephew of Marcus’s son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), who murdered his father in order to seize the throne.

Napoleon Bonaparte is known for being many things: Warrior, General, Tyrant, Genius, Rebel. Take your pick! For Ridley Scott’s new film, Napoleon, Joaquin Phoenix brings many shades of Bonaparte’s reputation to light, highlighting the complex historical figure’s faults and strategic erudition. Today, Columbia Pictures debuted a new clip from Napoleon featuring the Battle of Austerlitz, aka the Battle of Three Emperors.
The footage finds Phoenix’s Napoleon taking the high ground, looking down on his enemies with disdain and menacing intent. As both sides of the conflict converge, Napoleon waits for his adversaries to make a grave mistake. Once carefully chosen battlefield positions reveal themselves, Napoleon’s enemies discover they’re traversing a frozen body of water. Before they can retreat to safety, Napoleon unleashes hell in the form of cannon balls pointed directly at the frigid lakebed. As the artillery pierces the ice, soldiers fall to their deaths,...

Here’s your first look at the brand new trailer for Ridley Scott’s Napoleon starring Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby.
For Scott, reuniting with Phoenix for the first time since Gladiator was an immense pleasure. “He’s the only actor where we talk for weeks beforehand, just chatting and arguing in an office over aspects of the character. At the end, we are on the same page,” says Scott. “He’s good for me, because he keeps me honest, and I’m good for him, because I keep him in line. A new trailer for Ridley Scott’s upcoming historical epic “Napoleon” has arrived, and this one seems to telegraph the “Gladiator” and “Blade Runner” filmmaker’s modern approach to the story of the French leader.
A variation of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” plays throughout the trailer, which introduces Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix’s take on Napoleon Bonaparte sans French accent. Scott made the decision to have all of his actors use their real accents (Vanessa Kirby uses her English accent while playing Bonparte’s wife Josephine), so Phoenix’s take on Bonaparte is decidedly American.
Written by David Scarpa, “Napoleon” is Scott’s return to the historical epic genre, familiar territory for him. Aside from Best Picture winner “Gladiator,” Scott also steered 1992’s “1492” and his 2005 film about the crusades, “Kingdom of Heaven,” only gained esteem when his superior director’s cut was released on home video.

Napoleon director-producer Ridley Scott was on stage at Deadline’s Contenders London event to discuss the journey behind his latest epic and why he chose Joaquin Phoenix to portray the iconic Emperor.
Speaking about casting Oscar winner Phoenix, who he had previously worked with on Gladiator [in which Phoenix played another Emperor], filmmaking legend Scott told the audience that he had always viewed Phoenix’s character in that movie as “the most sympathetic character in Gladiator, being the product of such a neglectful father.”
He continued: “I was blown away by his outrageous film Joker. I didn’t like the way it celebrated violence but Joaquin was remarkable. I thought he’d be an amazing asset to Napoleon, [not only creatively] also in a commercial sense. There were only two actors I had in mind for the role. I won’t mention the other one.”

Ridley Scott and Joaquin Phoenix are back together for the upcoming film Napoleon. The two worked together on the 2000 Oscar-winning Best Picture Gladiator, with Russell Crowe.
Napoleon is a spectacle-filled action epic that details the checkered rise and fall of the iconic French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, played by Oscar®-winner Joaquin Phoenix. Against a stunning backdrop of large-scale filmmaking orchestrated by legendary director Ridley Scott, the film captures Bonaparte’s relentless journey to power through the prism of his addictive, volatile relationship with his one true love, Josephine, showcasing his visionary military and political tactics against some of the most dynamic practical battle sequences ever filmed.
Here’s a look at the first trailer.
In April Apple Original Films announced that the historical action epic would first be released exclusively in theaters worldwide, in partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment, on Wednesday, November 22, before streaming globally on Apple TV+.

The apparently ageless Ridley Scott is back with another historical epic. On Monday, Apple and Sony debuted the first trailer for Scott’s “Napoleon,” the 85-year-old filmmaker’s latest widescreen blockbuster.
The film reunites Scott with his “Gladiator” star Joaquin Phoenix for the first time since that Oscar-winning hit. “Joaquin is about as far from conventional as you can get. Not deliberately, but out of intuition,” Scott previously told Empire about his star. “That’s what makes him tick. If something bothers him, he’ll let you know.”
In that same interview, Scott said Phoenix basically rewrote the script to better align it with his take on the character. “We unpicked the film to help him focus on who Bonaparte was. I had to respect that, because what was being said was incredibly constructive. It made it all grow bigger and better,” Scott said.

Apple has released the trailer for the biopic about the infamous French ruler from the historical epic maestro Ridley Scott. Napoleon showcases the conqueror on his conquest for Europe and the opposition he faces, not just from external figures but from internal ones as well. Scott is no stranger to grand-scale period pieces, having directed such films as Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Exodus: Gods and Kings and The Last Duel. He brings his signature gritty tone to the story of one of the world’s strongest military minds.
The official synopsis from Apple reads,
Napoleon is an original and personal look at Napoleon’s origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine. The film captures Napoleon’s famous battles, relentless ambition, and astounding strategic mind as an extraordinary military leader and war visionary.

Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator” sequel has rounded out its cast with the additions of May Calamawy, Peter Mensah (“Avatar”) and Matt Lucas, as well as legacy cast member Derek Jacobi, who will reprise his role from the 2000 blockbuster.

Napoleon is on his way.
During Monday night’s Sony presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, the studio revealed the first footage ever of Ridley Scott’s epic from Apple Original Films. Directed by Scott from a screenplay by David Scarpa, Napoleon stars Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix as the French emperor and military leader Napoleon Bonaparte. The feature is notable as it signals Apple is serious about entering the theatrical space, which is welcome news for theater owners.
Sony film boss Tom Rothman introduced the footage, noting the film will have a “robust theatrical window and a full-throttle marketing campaign before moving to Apple TV+.” He added to theater owners, “We trust you will all give maximum support to this film,” as it could portend more cooperation between theaters and streamers to come.
Rothman noted that an epic tale of this scale has not been seen in years.
Indeed, the footage shown supports that notion.

Sony Motion Pictures Chairman and CEO Tom Rothman introduced a sequence from Ridley Scott’s Apple TV+ movie, Napoleon at CinemaCon tonight.
Apple’s continued foray into theatrical was a big get for Sony, which is distributing the movie.
“It will be released at Thanksgiving with a robust theatrical window and robust marketing campaign before moving to Apple TV+,” Rothman said. Unlike other studios, Sony doesn’t have a streaming service — rather considering itself an arms dealer, in their licensing of films, but also taking on being a distribution partner.

Rothman conveyed to exhibs in Caesars Palace Colosseum theater how baffled he is that Scott still hasn’t won an Oscar for Best Director. “I know that he can do things cinematically that filmmakers half his age, can’t do,” Rothman said praising the 85-year-old filmmaker.

“Napoleon,” Ridley Scott’s sweeping historical epic about the French military leader, debuted footage for the first time at CinemaCon. The film is a mixture of the new and old worlds, and not just in terms of its subject matter. It’s being produced by Apple Original Films, one of the new tech players to enter the movie business, and is being distributed in theaters by Sony, a traditional studio that used its presentation to talk up the movie.
“The film shouts big screen,” Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman teased.
Joaquin Phoenix stars as Napoleon Bonaparte, the brilliant military strategist who conquered much of Europe only to see his empire crumble. But the film isn’t all about the battles that determined the course of history. It will also offer a more personal look at the visionary commander by dissecting his volatile relationship with his wife, Josephine, played by Vanessa Kirby.

After it was announced in 2020 that the Joker star had been cast as Napoleon Bonaparte in a new feature from Ridley Scott, the historical drama — aptly titled Napoleon — has a release date set for November 22nd, 2023. Along with the news comes a first look at Phoenix in his French military attire.

23 years after “Gladiator,” Joaquin Phoenix is still emperor in Ridley Scott’s eyes. “Napoleon,” the reunion between the “Joker” star and “Alien” director, is getting a wide theatrical rollout this November, with Apple partnering with Sony Pictures Entertainment on what will be a worldwide release.
A production of Apple Studios, “Napoleon” will hit theaters worldwide on November 22; following its theatrical premiere, the film will exclusively stream on Apple TV+ at an unannounced date. “Napoleon” will charge into movie theaters just in time for awards season.

Phoenix previously teamed with Scott on 2000’s mega-hit “Gladiator,” so there’s a track record there. But this film won’t be all Waterloo, all the time. In addition to epic battles, “Napoleon” will also look at the visionary commander’s volatile relationship with his wife, Josephine, who is played by Vanessa Kirby. Apple also released a first look image (above) from the film featuring Phoenix on horseback, saber unsheathed.

Ridley Scott and his executive producer Aidan Elliott were in Rome working on House of Gucci when the two were discussing locations for Scott’s upcoming historical epic Napoleon for Apple when the director thought Malta, where he’d famously filmed Gladiator, would make for a great location for a beginning scene in the film for the siege of Toulon.
“The siege of Toulon was Napoleon’s first military victory where he really showed his potential as a future expert in the field,” says Elliott. “There was a very specific geography needed to achieve this and Ridley, being someone who likes to do things practically as much as possible as opposed to visual effects, remembered Valletta and the port there, which is a spectacular Napoleonic port.”
They decided to fly from Rome the next day to take a look at Valletta’s suitability and, says Elliott, “it was almost a no-brainer.
