Seven horror screenwriters share their tips on how to write a really scary movie
It’s easy to write a horror movie, isn’t it? Pack up a couple of kids, send them off somewhere isolated, and have a monster chase them through the woods. Throw in some loud bangs on the soundtrack and you’re sorted. Right?
Wrong. Well, okay, not wrong if you want to write a basic, generic, forgettable kind of horror movie. But if you want to do something better than that, things get a bit more complicated. You need a proper story; characters worth investing in; a carefully constructed atmosphere of dread punctuated by the kind of scares that make your audience hide behind their hands. And that’s not easy.
To get the lowdown on what works and what doesn’t, I interviewed some working horror writers. Here are their tips:...

Nina Forever: Relationships are complicated, and even when you think you’ve moved on past a former lover, you still carry traces of that person’s influence with you for a while. That’s the theme at the heart of Nina Forever, the darkly comedic feature film debut from Ben and Chris Blaine that follows new couple Holly (Abigail Hardingham) and Rob (Cian Barry) as they contend with the return of Nina (Fiona O’Shaughnessy), Rob’s former girlfriend who was killed during a car accident and decides to pop up during their first time having sex. And that’s only the beginning of the awkwardness that continues to build between the trio throughout Nina Forever.
What I really enjoyed about Nina Forever was the approach that the Blaine Brothers take in tackling their complicated ideas; there are no easy answers here and the way the filmmakers handle topics like obsession,...

★★★★★ It's as rare as rocking horse excrement for horror movies to exhibit emotional depths not related to the visceral thrills of the jump scare and the insidious, blood-chilling fright. So invested in the art of the slay and sending the audience into paroxysms of fear, the genre and its practitioners have either forgotten or disregarded the idea that it's capable of doing other stuff. Like making the audience have a good cry. The aim of Nina Forever, by débutantes Ben and Chris Blaine, is not to get the heart pumping and nerves going with ghost train jolts, but to pull at the heart strings and demonstrate that films of this nature are entirely capable of provoking our tear ducts to do impersonations of Niagara Falls.

I love a heartwarming, feel-good romance story just as much as the next person, but sometimes, it’s those doomed cinematic relationships that tend to stick with you the most. One of the more interesting ill-fated couples I recently encountered was Rob (Cian Barry) and Holly (Abigail Hardingham) from Nina Forever. The new couple must endure the looming presence of Rob’s ex-girlfriend, Nina (Fiona O’Shaughnessy), who died recently in a car accident and happens to show up anytime they become intimate.
The pitch-black comedy touches on a lot of the complications that come with modern relationships and all the proverbial baggage we endure as a result of our previous romantic entanglements. It really struck me throughout the story just how well directors Ben and Chris Blaine perfectly explore those themes in Nina Forever, making me realize that some of my very favorite movie love affairs, particularly from the 1980s,...

Nina Forever
Written and directed by Ben Blaine and Chris Blaine
UK, 2015
The Marquis de Sade wrote, “There is no better way to know death than to link it with some licentious image”. Georges Bataille latched onto this idea, arguing that without death there is no desire. Factors of procreation and beauty play a role in sex, but true desire is rooted in our mortality: we want to fuck because we know we will die. The link between death and desire is at the heart of the Blaine brothers’ debut feature, Nina Forever. After the death of his girlfriend and a failed suicide attempt, Rob (Cian Barry) starts a relationship with his young co-worker, Holly (Abigail Hardingham). But every time they have sex his dead girlfriend, Nina (Fiona O’Shaughnessy), appears mangled and bloodied in their bed.

Acclaimed out of SXSW, the beautiful and very twisted horror romance Nina Forever has a full trailer to writhe around with. From directors Ben Blaine & Chris Blaine, Nina Forever is an utterly macabre, and very darkly funny affair about a blooming romance and the very dead girlfriend that comes between. In the film, Rob (Cian Barry)…

With writer/director David Robert Mitchell's Cannes-premiered "It Follows" bringing in over $16 million at the domestic box office on a slim $2 million budget, the theatrical market seems ripe for another arty horror movie hit to arise. So which of this year's festival favorites could follow (no pun intended) in "It Follows'" footsteps? With the close of the 3rd annual Stanley Film Festival on Sunday, below I've pegged six buzzed-about horror titles from this year's three major festivals so far (Sundance, SXSW and Stanley) that could become the next unlikely breakout in theaters. "The Witch" Director: Robert Eggers Cast: Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie Synopsis: New England, 1630: William and Katherine lead a devout Christian life, homesteading on the edge of an impassible wilderness, with five children. When their newborn son mysteriously vanishes and their crops fail, the family begins to turn on one another. Screened at: Sundance...

Enduring a crippling sense of pain and loss often seems to be an isolating experience, as you struggle to overcome the harrowing feelings of being abandoned by, and detached from, the outside world. Whether you live in the quiet suburban countryside or in a chaotic city, people often don’t feel as though their self-imposed seclusion would be considered normal, as their emotions don’t get much attention by any part of society. Intensely missing someone who’s no longer in your life, and attempting to stay connected to that person you have so longingly loved, intriguingly fuels the new horror film, ‘Nina Forever.’ Brothers Ben and Chris Blaine, who made their feature [ Read More ]

Something wicked this way comes, all the way to SXSW: the UK horror film Nina Forever will have its premiere there later this month. And as we get pretty close to that date, a new teaser trailer has been released, together with the Very eye-catching publicity picture above. Here is the synopsis from producing company Jeva Films: Holly loves Rob and tries to help him through his grief - even if it means contending with his dead girlfriend Nina, who comes back, bloody and broken, every time they make love. Blimey, talk about coitus interruptus... Written and directed by Ben and Chris Blaine (who are brothers), Nina Forever is labeled a horror comedy and a fairy-tale, but the teaser below actually shows what looks to...

Brothers Ben and Chris Blaine are the latest in a tradition of filmmaking siblings with sights set on making a splash this side of the water and if the first look at their debut feature Nina Forever is any indication, they're well on their way.
The Bifa nominated, BAFTA shortlisted duo successfully funded their Kickstarter for the movie in 2013 and now Nina Forever is getting ready to premiere at SXSW where it is likely to make a big splash. They call it "darkly amusing" though all I see in this first trailer for the movie is the dark and, Ok, there is a hint of a comedic element built into the story about Holly (Abi Hardingham), a young woman who is crushing on Rob [Continued ...]...

Amy Schumer and Bill Hader in TrainwreckPhoto: Universal Pictures With Sundance just wrapping up and Berlin starting up in a few days, we are now immersed in the year-long barrage of film festivals. One such festival in South By Southwest. A few weeks back they announced the first seven films of their program, including the opening night film Brand: A Second Coming. Today, they have revealed the rest of the features to be shown in March (except for the midnight program), and some of it has me very excited. The bigger titles announced do not do much for me. Paul Feig's Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy, and the Will Ferrell/Kevin Hart starrer Get Hard leave a lot to be desired in terms of anticipation, as does a work in progress cut of Judd Apatow's latest film Trainwreck. I'm guessing an Apatow work in progress is probably around three and a half hours.
