The Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners' Association has announced a new revenue sharing model based on the market value of the male stars of Tamil film fraternity. The unprecedented move, if implemented, will be both a boon and a bane, feel industry experts.
According to the new model, theatre owners would share revenues based on the collections of a film across various centres, week by week.
While superstar Rajinikanth, Ajith and Vijay constitute tier 1 of the group, Suriya, Jayam Ravi, Dhanush, Simbu, Sivakarthikeyan and Vijay Sethupathi form the tier 2. The rest of the actors, including Kamal Haasan and Vikram, fall in the tier 3 group.
Tirupur Subramaniam, President of Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association, feels the model is a recommendation for the benefit of theatre owners as most of them don't see profits.

Vijay Sethupathi’s latest movie, Seethakaathi, which released on Thursday, was leaked online by the notorious piracy website, despite the Madras High Court’s order to block over 12,000 websites that host pirated versions of movies. Before Seethakaathi, the website also leaked Mohanlal’s Odiyan and Hollywood movie Aquaman which had hit the screens early last week. The makers of the Rajinikanth starrer 2.0, Lyca Productions, had moved a plea in the Madras High Court before the release of the movie, producing a list of 12,564 illegal websites. A ban on Tamil Rockers would block around 2,000 websites operated by the website. Lyca’s counsel Vijayan Subramaniam contended that even if Internet Service Providers (ISPs) block access to Tamil Rockers, the website immediately creates mirror websites that continue to stream pirated versions of movies.

Film CommentaryWhile the film has a gripping screenplay and some innovative plot twists, it falls back on demonising the already ostracised. *Spoilers aheadSowmya Rajendran*Spoilers ahead Director Ramkumar's Ratsasan is doing well at the box-office, even though it released alongside 96, a film which opened to huge expectations. Much of the appreciation that the Vishnu Vishal-Amala Paul starrer has raked in is not surprising, considering it has been a long time since we've had a film on a serial killer that's told with some amount of depth and a gripping screenplay. Ajay Gnanamuthu's recently released film Imaikka Nodigal, for instance, started on a promising note but was quickly derailed because of an annoying romance track and too many twists that lacked conviction. In that sense, Ratsasan has many things going for it, including the red herring the director places in the plot. The school teacher who sexually abuses his girl students...

The actor put out a tweet on Monday on his official Twitter page with the first-look poster of the film. Here is the First Look Poster of #Seethakaathi#VijaySethupathi25 pic.twitter.com/Qvm51oaf6d — Vijay Sethupathi (@i_vijaysethu) January 15, 2018 Directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan, Seethakaathi marks Vijay Sethupathi’s second venture with the director. Their last film that came out in 2012, a neo-noir black comedy called Naduvula Konjam Pakatha Kaanum, was a great success and received rave reviews from critics. Known for his versatile role choices, Vijay Sethupathi is seen donning a completely new look of an aged person in the poster. The poster features Vijay Sethupathi in an almost unrecognisable avatar, sitting cross-legged on a wooden chair, holding a book in his right hand, looking straight through the frame, lost in deep thought. Wearing a long-sleeved kurta and veshti, his countenance exudes power. The black and white poster itself looks like an old, vintage photograph. Vijay Sethupathi has previously played an aged man in Orange Mittai but the Seethakaathi look is distinct from the earlier avatar. Balaji began working on his script for Seethakaathi immediately after the success of Naduvula Konjam Pakatha Kaanum. When he began working on his romantic comedy Oru Pakka Kadhai, he had to push Seethakaathi for a later date. Balaji eventually began filming for Seethakaathi in April 2017. Produced by Sudhan Sundaram, Umesh, Jayaram and Arun Vaidyanathan of Passion Studios, the film will also star Remya Nambeesan, Gayathrie and veteran director J Mahendran. Earlier, in an interview with The New Indian Express, Balaji dispelled assumptions on the film’s core and connections with the legendary Tamil philanthropist and literature enthusiast of the same name. Vijay Sethupathi’s last film Karuppan received moderate success. The actor also has a number of films planned for 2018.

Tamil cinema is often loud and crass, having not quite got over the exaggerated theatrical style of Sivaji Ganesan or the childish antics of Rajnikanth. This is where short film director, Arun Vaidyanathan's first feature, "Achamundu Achamundu" (There is Fear, There is Fear), scores: the pleasantly toned down mannerisms and subdued style come as a refreshing change for Tamil audiences arguably tired of high-pitched dialogues and cacophonous songs. Shot in New Jersey and New York with Red One camera - a new technology vouched for by helmers such as Peter Jackson and Steven Soderbergh - the Tamil-English movie is woven around a rarely tackled subject.
