In March, Shudder will spotlight the bold, visionary horror emerging from France in the twenty-first century, including essential titles from the boundary-pushing wave of films dubbed “New French Extremity.” That includes Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury‘s Livid, previously unavailable on streaming in the U.S. Livid follows Lucy (Chloé Coulloud), a young woman training to become an at-home […]

Snd, the commercial arm of French TV network M6, is set to kick off international sales this fall on “Kandisha” and newly-acquired family movie “Pil’s Adventures,” beginning at the Sitges Film Festival and the virtual AFM market.
“Pil’s Adventures” is a CGI animated feature produced by Tat Productions, the well-established French banner behind “The Jungle Bunch” and “Terra Willy.” Now in production, the film was pitched at Cartoon Movie and is expected to be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2021. In the absence of a physical market, Snd will introduce “Pil’s Adventures” to buyers this month with the script, a 10-minute clip of first footage and a print presentation of all the characters, backdrops and production.
Directed by Julien Fournet, the film follows the adventures of Pil, a brave, orphaned young girl who lives in the medieval city of Misty Rock. One day, a cruel regent curses Roland,...

French directors Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo, the driving force behind the notorious L’interieur (aka Inside) and the stylish Livid, turn their gallic focus to a much-maligned genre – the slasher movie – with Among the Living, a film that’s best described as Stephen King’s Stand By Me meets Friday the 13th.
Starting out with a disturbing prologue featuring a cameo by an almost unrecognisable Beatrice Dalle; a prologue that recalls the nastiness and brutality of L’interieur, Among the Living tells the story of troublemakers Victor, Tom and Dan who, on the last day of school, leave early to explore the countryside and commit petty crime. Ending up on the scenery-strewn back-lot at an abandoned film studio, they witness...

Variety is reporting Snd, an arm of M6, is set to co-produce the next from the filmmaking duo behind one of the greatest horror debuts there is, and a film that gets them a lifetime pass, Inside (À l’INTÉRIEUR). Set to be Bustillo and Maury's third feature together, Among The Living finds three adolescents in an abandoned amusement park and a man in a clown mask that targets them.
The star of their second film (the wonderful, atmospheric Livid which Dimension has been unfortunately holding on to, and which also saw three kids messing about where they shouldn't), Chloé Coulloud is also leading Among The Living, alongside Lannick Gautry and Francis Renaud. Beatrice Dalle, who terrified in Inside and briefly appears in Livid, will also reunite with the directors in Living.

Stars: Chloé Coulloud, Félix Moati, Jérémy Kapone | Written and Directed by Alexandre Bustillo, Julien Maury
The final film in the Biff: Bradford After Dark line up you would hope for something special, and in Livid we got it. With an introduction from Julien Maury one of the directors and writers of the film there was a certain expectation of this film, especially after their first film Inside which is one of the most intense films you are ever likely to see.
French horror has the uniqueness of being quite hard-core and violent with films such as Martyrs and Switchblade Romance/Haute Tension, but with Maury stating they wanted to move away from that it would be interesting to see what he was presenting us with.
Livid is the story of Lucy who on her first day as a caregiver is introduced to the house of Mrs Jessel. A former...

Inside directors Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo are back with more French horror, this time with Livid (review), a "living nightmare" that has been both celebrated and panned by critics. Arriving in theaters next year from Dimension Films, Livid is a horror fairytale set during Halloween night when three youths decide to burglarize an old lady's desolate house, but what awaits them is no ordinary house... Inside you'll find a creeptacular international one sheet that's very representational of the film's atmosphere. Lucie (Chloé Coulloud) is a young lady who takes a job training as an in-house caregiver under the tutelage of a crotchety veteran. She is introduced to an elderly woman named Mrs. Jessel, who is over 100 years old and lies in a cerebral coma in her barren home. By chance, she learns of her past as a dance instructor, and that a treasure lies in the disheveled habitat.
Along with her friends Ben (Jérémy Kapone) and William (Félix Moati), who like Lucie, are strapped for cash, they break in and enter a surreal world where the line between reality and fantasy are blurred. They are engulfed in a supernatural landscape that they can’t escape from, as they find out Mrs. Jessel’s dead daughter has crept back from beyond the grave after spending most of her afterlife in limbo and has vengeance on her mind.

There are pros and cons to making a kick-ass, critically acclaimed film for your debut feature. On the plus side, well, you made a fantastic movie. But then you have to follow it up and prove it wasn’t just a fluke. Just ask Richard Kelly, Kevin Costner, or Rian Johnson what it feels like when that effort fails. And now French directors Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury have joined that sad walk of shame with the release of their follow-up to the brilliant and brutal thriller, Inside. That film features two women, one pregnant and the other psychotic, battling to the death in the mother-to-be’s home. It’s terrifying, exciting, surprising, and shocking… everything that their follow-up isn’t. Livid follows three young adults who think they’ve found a way to get rich quick with an easy score. Lucie (Chloé Coulloud) is an apprentice caregiver who discovers one of her clients is a rich...

Directors: Alexandre Bustillo, Julien Maury Writers: Alexandre Bustillo, Julien Maury Starring: Chloé Marcq, Félix Moati, Jérémy Kapone, Chloé Coulloud, Marie-Claude Pietragalla Upon entering the Fantastic Fest day seven screening of Livid, I was beginning to worry that I was becoming too desensitized to violence. Nothing thus far at Ff 2011 had revolted me as much as previous years' screenings had. Luckily, I could rely upon writer-directors Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury to right that wrong. The plot is extremely simple. During Anna's (Chloé Marcq) first day at work as a home healthcare provider, she tags along with an old pro, Wilson (Catherine Jacob). Their rounds take them to a scary old mansion in which Jessel (Marie-Claude Pietragalla) is rotting away in a coma. Wilson happens to mention that the old hag has a treasure hidden in the mansion, and Anna promptly passes that information along to William (Félix Moati) and Ben...

It's always exciting to see a fresh take on something you've witnessed before, when a filmmaker—or in Livid's case, filmmakers —toys with mythology, concocts a clever way of expressing that vision, and scares you senseless with what they've crafted. For Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, that fresh take on an old concept was done near flawlessly with the 2007 home invasion movie À l'intérieur (Inside). With Livid, they do it again, but the great thing about this is you don't even know going in what old clothes they're taking out of the wardrobe to dust off and make presentable again. Nor will I be revealing what that idea is. Regardless, it's safe to say that Livid is inventive, smart atmospheric, and on several occasions damn scary. Lucie, played by Chloé Coulloud, is on her first day as an in-home caregiver when she visits Mrs. Jessel's estate. Mrs. Jessel lies...

Out of the Blue (La Surprise) proves once again that the French do melodrama well. A heartfelt film about the complications and joys of finding love in unexpected places, the movie is a well-paced treat for fans of a good “kitchen sink” drama/romance.
Directed by Alain Tasma and written by Dominique Garnier, the film is currently making the rounds of the independent film festival circuit.
The drama begins in the very first scene, as we watch Marion (Mireille Perrier), an attractive middle-aged woman, leave her husband quite permanently instead of carry on with their evening plans.
Paul (Robin Renucci) is an unappreciative jerk from the get-go, though Marion's decision is complicated by the protests of their teenage daughter Justine (Chloé Coulloud), who doesn’t take the news well.
Marion herself is a high school drama teacher (Justine is even in her class), and she begins her single life with...
