Exclusive: Sugar23 has signed Charlie Tahan, the actor, writer, and director best known for his breakout starring role on Netflix’s Ozark, for management.
For a refresher, the Emmy-winning Ozark follows the seemingly ordinary financial planner, Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman), who becomes entangled in a dangerous world of money laundering and drug cartels. When a scheme goes awry, he’s forced to relocate his family from Chicago to the remote Ozarks in Missouri to launder money for a cartel, working to outmaneuver local criminals, corrupt officials, and his own fractured family dynamics.
Tahan’s character is Wyatt Langmore — cousin of Julia Garner’s Ruth — a member of a local crime family who proves an intelligent and introspective fan favorite, in spite of his troubled upbringing. His work as part of the ensemble earned him three SAG Award nominations between 2019 and 2023.

Christian Bale plays an 1830s detective tasked with solving a series of grisly, possibly cult-related murders in Netflix’s ice-cold thriller, “The Pale Blue Eye.” Watch the first trailer above.
Scott Cooper’s film, which the streamer acquired last year in a 55 million deal, takes place at West Point Academy, a military training school. When a cadet turns up dead, its leadership turns to Augustus Landor (Bale) for help – a local detective who, if rumors are true, “once elicited a confession with nothing more than a piercing look”.
The trailer opens on a wintry landscape, where Landor contemplates the crime at hand – a soldier has been hanged, with his heart expertly cut out from his chest.

Christian Bale reunites with his Out of the Furnace director, Scott Cooper, for a new Netflix film that uncovers the origins of Edgar Allen Poe. Cooper is a director that likes to emphasize atmosphere in his movies, helming films such as Crazy Heart and Black Mass; none of his movies are picturesque nor glamorous. “We are all influenced by our surroundings, our atmosphere, the environments in which we live,” the director says as he takes a similar approach with his new gothic film, The Pale Blue Eye.
The official Netflix synopsis for the film reads,
“West Point, 1830. In the early hours of a gray winter morning, a cadet is found dead. Netflix has unveiled the full official trailer for The Pale Blue Eye, the second Edgar Allen Poe film this year about when he was at West Point. (Along with Raven's Hollow on Shudder.) It opens first in theaters later in December before playing on Netflix in January. Set at West Point, 1830. A world-weary detective is hired to discreetly investigate the gruesome murder of a cadet. Stymied by the cadets’ code of silence, he enlists one of their own to help unravel the case — a young man the world would come to know as Edgar Allan Poe. The film stars Christian Bale as Landor and Harry Melling as Poe, with Gillian Anderson, Lucy Boynton, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Toby Jones, Harry Lawtey, Simon McBurney, Hadley Robinson, Timothy Spall, Brennan Cook, plus Charlie Tahan, and Robert Duvall. In the trailer for upcoming film “Pale Blue Eye,” Christian Bale is investigating a murder in 1830s upstate New York.
Netflix has released the first look at the American Gothic mystery film, in which Bale plays veteran detective Augustus Landor. Based on Louis Bayard’s 2006 novel of the same name, the film follows Landor as he is called to investigate a killing at the United States Military Academy in West Point. With a serial killer on the prowl, Augustus enlists Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling) to help him solve the case. Poe, the renowned writer and poet known for “The Raven,” “The Fall of the House of Usher” and “A Dream Within a Dream,” is introduced as young cadet at the military academy.
“Down, down, down came the hot thrashing flurry,” Melling’s Poe says in a teaser released on Oct. 27. “Darkest night, black with hell-charneled fury, leaving only that deathly pale blue eye.

When "I Am Legend" was released in 2007, most people watching in crowded theaters probably never thought they'd see its awesome vistas of a deserted, windswept Manhattan in real life. Those images were chilling enough originally but take on an extra poignancy when revisited in a pandemic-era world, now that we've all gotten a glimpse of what an apocalypse might actually look like (albeit one without dodgy CGI mutants).
It's also strange watching a Will Smith movie after you-know-what at the 2022 Oscars ceremony. When it came out in 2007, "I Am Legend" was Smith at his most relatable, charismatic, and assured, carrying a blockbuster with a 150 million price tag almost single-handed with his sheer presence and star power. His journey to being taken seriously as an actor was an arduous and not always successful one, but the film marked the sweet spot in his transition. It's a big tentpole sci-fi movie with...

"Ozark" is one of the best drama shows in recent memory. Although "Ozark" tested viewers' willingness to sit through disturbing content, it surprisingly took its familial storylines seriously. The combination of interpersonal family drama and complex criminal conspiracies made it one of Netflix's most unique shows.
"Ozark" follows the story of Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman), a selfish financial advisor who gets in over his head because of his involvement with a Mexican drug cartel. To pay back the cartel's lieutenant, Camino Del Rio (Esai Morales), Marty decides to move his family to the Ozarks and start a money laundering scheme. His wife, Wendy (Laura Linney), and children Charlotte (Sofia Hublitz) and Jonah (Skylar Gaertner) initially have no idea about his secret connections.
"Ozark" concluded earlier this year with its divisive series finale. One of the things that distinguished "Ozark" from its inception was the incredible cast. Here are some...

Netflix has released the first teaser trailer for Christian Bale's latest, "The Pale Blue Eye," which also represents another collaboration for him with director Scott Cooper. Bale, who is coming off of this summer's "Thor: Love and Thunder," previously worked with Cooper on movies like "Out of the Furnace" and "Hostiles." This time? They're headed back to the 1800s for a mystery that ties into the king of old-time gothic spookiness, Edgar Allan Poe.
In this case, the legendary author behind "The Raven" and "The Masque of the Red Death" is played by Harry Melling, of "The Queen's Gambit" fame. So, how is it that Poe crosses paths with a man trying to solve a murder? Let's have a look-see.

Francis Lawrence's feature adaptation of Richard Matheson's 1954 novel of the same name was a remarkable success, grossing over 585 million total worldwide (not adjusted for inflation). Will Smith was at the apex of his action star career, coasting on the well-earned coattails he cemented in the 1990s with the likes of "Men in Black" and "Independence Day." All things considered, it was a serendipitous merging of creative forces. Matheson's novel is well-regarded as one of the century's greatest science fiction achievements, and Smith is tailor-made for this kind of weighty, grim science fiction.
Unfortunately for some, "I Am Legend" only occasionally flirted with the greatness it was so close to achieving. Adapting any novel is a difficult prospect; the act of cutting and preserving, the hard choices made to tailor the written word to a visual medium. Ruth Langmore tragically bites the dust in “Ozark’s” fourth and final season, but the woman who plays her, Julia Garner, is still going strong at the Emmys. The actor doubled her nominations tally this July, racking up two bids, including one for “Ozark” for Best Drama Supporting Actress. This is the third time in a row she is shortlisted for the Netflix series, for which she parlayed both of her previous two citations into victories (2019-2020). Should she now continue her winning streak, she will not only score an unprecedented hat trick but also enter record territory in her category.
First off, she would be the first performer under the current popular vote system — which has been in place since 2016 — to win more than two Emmys for one show. What’s more, a third victory would tie her with Ellen Corby — who triumphed thrice for “The Waltons” in 1973, 1975 and...

If Julia Garner (“Ozark”) ends up winning a third Emmy this year in the Best Drama Supporting Actress category after her victories in 2019 and ’20, she would be tied with Ellen Corby (“The Waltons”), who won thrice in 1973, ’75 and ’76. Together, Garner and Corby would then share the second place position in the category, behind only Nancy Marchand (“Lou Grant”), who claimed a leading four trophies in 1978, ’80, ’81 and ’82.
Currently there are eight women who have two wins apiece in this Emmy race: Kristy McNichol (“Family”), Bonnie Bartlett (“St. Elsewhere”), Allison Janney (“The West Wing”), Tyne Daly (“Christy” and “Judging Amy”), Blythe Danner (“Huff”), Anna Gunn (“Breaking Bad”), Maggie Smith (“Downton Abbey”) and Garner. A couple of notes here: Janney later won two more trophies for “The West Wing” as a lead actress, and Smith claimed a prior statuette for “Downton Abbey” when it was classified as a limited series.

There is no doubt that the fourth and final season of “Ozark” was going to be the show’s most ambitious undertaking yet. For composers Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans, who received their career-first Emmy nominations for the Netflix drama’s third season in 2020, this meant they would have the chance to go bigger with their score — or so they thought. “I remember us saying, ‘It’s the fourth and final season — I wonder if we can push [the score] to get a little bigger than usual,'” recounts Bensi in a new webchat with Gold Derby (watch our exclusive video interview above). “I remember the answer coming back to us [being] like, ‘No, stay in the same world and add some new things, but really stay in the same world. We don’t need to depart from what we’ve been.'”

Monsters can be literal or metaphorical, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find which are which in the anthology horror series “Monsterland.”
“Monsterland” is a Hulu original horror anthology released on October 2, 2020. “Monsterland” doesn’t feature monsters in the traditional sense. There is no vicious monster on the loose killing people. Though the atmosphere is eerie, the series doesn’t rely on jump scares to deliver horror.
Instead, “Monsterland” will slowly inject horror into your mind and leave you unsettled for hours after. What’s “Monsterland” all about, and where can you watch it? Read on to find out.
Where Can You Watch “Monsterland?”

From the very inception, music was indispensable to setting the tone on “Ozark” and making its crime-ridden world and morally complex characters come alive. So, for music supervisor Gabe Hilfer, there was absolutely an impetus to add a musical exclamation point as he and showrunner Chris Mundy were working on the Netflix drama’s fourth and final season. “It was a big focus,” exclaims Hilfer in a new webchat with Gold Derby. “[The show]’s not a musical, we don’t use hundreds of songs… but when we do, they’re very specific, deliberate and intentional, and they’re talked about and discussed behind the scenes.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
If you’ve ever asked yourself how the music of English rock band Radiohead found its way into the soundtrack of the gritty drama, Hilfer has an answer for you as he...

Alfonso Herrera joined the cast of Netflix’s “Ozark” for its fourth and final season in the role of Javier “Javi” Elizonndro, a previously unseen member of the Navarro family who walks a fine line between being an obedient lieutenant and scheming to take over his uncle Omar’s (Felix Solis) cartel. Though his ruthless, murderous character could have easily been reduced to his villainous traits, it was important to the actor to imbue him with multifarious layers. “Once I was starting to create, or to build, this character, I understood, or I tried to see, that he was a very lonely guy,” Herrera tells Gold Derby in a new exclusive video interview (watch above). “He was a person that was rejected by his family, was rejected by his inner circle, his inner entourage of family. The fourth season of “Ozark” was a unique one — and that’s not just because it was the show’s farewell installment. It was also the Netflix drama’s longest season ever with 14 episodes and split into two seven-episode blocks that debuted on January 21 and April 29, respectively. “We thought of it as two different seasons, just because people were going to experience it that way,” Emmy-nominated showrunner and executive producer Chris Mundy tells Gold Derby in a new webchat. “When you pasted all [episodes] together, they had to make coherent sense… So, it was a little tricky. It’s one season, but it’s not, and it’s two seasons, but it’s not.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Instrumental in bringing about this cohesion is the seamless transition from Episode 7 (“Sanctified”) to 8 (“The Cousin of Death”), the latter of which is one of...

Before the fourth and final season of “Ozark,” Amanda Marsalis had directed only two episodes of the Netflix series, the Season 2 closer (“The Gold Coast”) and fifth episode of Season 3 (“It Came From Michoacán”). So, you can imagine that learning she would helm four episodes of the drama’s 14-episode farewell installment — whose two parts debuted on January 21 and April 29, respectively — elicited quite the response from the director. “Shock, gratitude, excitement and nausea,” she enumerates while describing her initial reaction to the news in a new exclusive video interview with Gold Derby (watch above).
Of the show’s last season, Marsalis directed Episodes 8 (“The Cousin of Death”), 9 (“”Pick a God and Pray”), 12 (“Trouble the Water”) and 13 (“Mud”). Out of these, Episode 8 particularly stands out as it not only is the opener of Part 2 but also breaks with the show’s usual style and structure.
