I mean, Shantaram does happen to be one of the more exciting pieces on my bookshelf, and I couldn’t help but make comparisons between these two pieces of work. Not merely because they hail from the pens...

Adapted from Trent Dalton’s 2019 novel, Boy Swallows Universe is a sprawling coming-of-age story about a precocious teen, Eli Bell (Felix Cameron), surrounded and raised by a motley crew of outlaws and outcasts in a rough suburb of Brisbane, Australia, in the 1980s. Eli’s loyal older brother, Gus (Lee Tiger Halley), hasn’t uttered a word since he was eight, and their step-father, Lyle (Travis Fimmel), is a small-time heroin dealer. Also milling about town are Slim (Bryan Brown), a convicted murderer, and Teddy (Ben O’Toole), an associate of Lyle’s with a soft spot for Eli’s loving but gullible mother, Frankie (Phoebe Tonkin).
Each of the show’s seven episodes depicts a different chapter of Eli’s colorful adolescence, a structural device that allows Boy Swallows Universe to cover ground at a lively pace. No event is dwelt on too long before, true to the reality of teen life,...

Hopscotch Features’ Troy Lum and Andrew Mason have joined forces with UK producer Gabrielle Tana to form a new production house, Brouhaha Entertainment.
The company combines their respective slates, with upcoming projects including Karim Aïnouz’s Firebrand, starring Michelle Williams; Kate Dennis’ All That I Am, based on the novel by Anna Funder; Lee Tamahori’s The Convert; Richard E. Grant’s Majesty and Patrick Dickinson’s Cottontail.
To be based across Sydney and London, the company has received investment via the Calculus Creative Content Eis Fund, which was launched in June 2019 in association with the British Film Institute (BFI).
The fund aims to support the growth of dynamic and ambitious UK companies, and has also backed the likes of Wonderhood Studios, Raindog Films, Maze Theory and Maven Screen Media.
Tana is the producer of the Oscar-nominated Philomena, The Invisible Woman and most recently, Netflix’s The Dig, from Australian director Simon Stone.

Joel Edgerton.
Joel Edgerton has spent most of his time in lockdown writing two feature films while rethinking where and how these productions can be shot in the Covid-19 era.
One is a suspense thriller in the vein of The Gift, which he had intended to film in the US. Now he is considering making it in Australia, encouraged by the success of Natalie Erika James’ identifiably Australian movie Relic.
Another revolves around a family of immigrants in New York. Avoiding the risks of filming in that pandemic-stricken city, he plans to shoot it in a studio somewhere in Asia.
“There is an opportunity for a real renaissance in Australia,” the writer-producer-director-actor said in a webinar with Screen Producers Australia CEO Matt Deaner.
“We have a plethora of talent and we can make a lot of stuff while the rest of the world has to rest.”

Remember that one year (2001) when the list-happy AFI (American Film Institute) decided to compete with the Globes and the Oscars in year end prizes? No, that didn't last long. But there's another AFI, The Australian Film Institute, that has been around for a long time and is in no such danger of being a one-off. This year, they're all about the amazing family crime drama Animal Kingdom which they awarded with a record breaking 18 nominations. Sure, the film is in danger of being way overhyped for people who are coming to it late (which is just about everyone given the sorry state of international distribution for dramas of virtually any kind) but for those who can slough off the "omg" raves, I guarantee you'll think it at least an insinuating and well executed crime drama.
