Like Google, Netflix has evolved from a Silicon Valley venture to a legitimate verb in the cultural lexicon. Over a decade after expanding from DVD-by-mail to streaming service, and seven since debuting its first original series with House of Cards, Netflix still dominates the online TV landscape. While competitors like Warner Bros., Disney, and Apple certainly vie for our time with their own in-house programs, the sheer inundation of Netflix originals requires its very own examination.

“How to Get to Heaven From Belfast,” the new series from “Derry Girls” creator Lisa McGee, has moved to Netflix from Channel 4.
Produced by Hat Trick Productions, the comedy thriller will start shooting in Northern Ireland later this year.
The project was announced by Channel 4 in August 2023. In a statement to Variety, the network cited “changes in editorial direction” and “rising costs” as to why the series could no longer move forward there.
“We loved Lisa McGee’s ‘How to Get to Heaven From Belfast’ and offered a substantial license fee to be its U.K. home,” a Channel 4 spokesperson said. “Unfortunately due to changes in editorial direction as the development process progressed, coupled with rising costs and the recent cooling in the U.S. co-production market, it became impossible to get the right international partner and funding plan in place. Stephen Merchant could be set for an Emmys return after amassing a whopping 19 Emmy nominations across an illustrious career as a writer, director, producer, and actor. This year, he’ll be in the mix for further nominations for his work on his hit Amazon Prime Video series “The Outlaws,” which he co-created with Elgin James.
The crime-comedy, which some over here in the UK have described as Britain’s answer to “Ozark,” follows the misadventures of several strangers who are thrown together to undertake a community payback sentence. Led by Merchant’s hapless, hopeless divorcee lawyer, Gregory Dillard, the group stumbles across a huge sum of money that belongs to someone very dangerous (Claes Bang‘s gangster).
The cast is full of stand-out performances, including from the legendary Christopher Walken, but Merchant leads the pack with his expert comedic skills. Merchant is a master of the awkward, self-deprecating humor he...

Siobhán McSweeney spoke candidly on the BAFTA TV Awards red carpet about how much she’d like to win a BAFTA. Later that night, the “Derry Girls” actress won a BAFTA (hurray!) — for Best Comedy Actress for the fourth and final season of the hit Northern Irish comedy.
In the Netflix show, she plays nun Sister Michael, who acts as a foible for the main group of Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), Orla (Louisa Harland), Clare (Nicola Coughlan), Michelle (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell), and James (Dylan Llewellyn), who try to make it through school during the Troubles in 1990s Northern Ireland. As Sister Michael, she rules the school the girls (and James) attend with an iron fist. Being a nun isn’t some higher calling to her, it’s a job — with free accommodation. As Sister Michael, McSweeney is dry, deadpan, and constantly provides the show with some of its best laughs and most iconic lines.

A politically charged statement from Siobhan McSweeney’s BAFTA acceptance speech was edited out of the BAFTA TV Awards ceremony broadcast on Sunday.
McSweeney won the best female comedy performance BAFTA for playing Sister Michael in Channel 4’s Northern Ireland-set show “Derry Girls.” During her speech McSweeney said: “To the people of Derry, thank you for taking me into your hearts and into your living rooms. I am daily impressed with how you encompass the spirit of compromise and resilience despite the indignities, ignorance, and stupidity of your so-called leaders in Dublin, Stormont and Westminster. In the words of my beloved Sister Michael, ‘It’s time they started to wise up.'”
These lines were cut from the broadcast.

It was a big night for Irish talent at this year’s British version of the Emmys, the BAFTA TV Awards, which were doled out at the Royal Festival Hall in London. Hosted by Romesh Ranganathan and Rob Beckett, two Irish series — – “Bad Sisters” and “Derry Girls” — won a pair of prizes as did the telefilm “I Am Ruth.”
“Derry Girls” won Best Scripted Comedy for its fourth and final season, which was a lovely parting gift for writer and creator Lisa McGee. The show beat out “Ghosts,” “Big Boys,” and “Am I Being Unreasonable?” although the latter did pick up the prize for Best Comedy Actor for 14-year-old Lenny Rush. He edged out Matt Berry (“What We Do In The Shadows”), Joseph Gilgun (“Brassic”), Stephen Merchant (“The Outlaws”), Jon Pointing (“Big Boys”), and Daniel Radcliffe (“Weird: The Al Yankovic Story”).

Derry Girls‘ concluding season has won Best Scripted Comedy at the BAFTA TV Awards.
The Channel 4 comedy won in a tricky category that included BBC double Am I Being Unreasonable? and Ghosts and Channel 4’s Big Boys.
Last year’s winner was the BBC’s Motherland.
“In the specific there is the universal,” said Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee, who thanked Channel 4 as she accepted the award. “And if you always look in the dark there will be light.”
Derry Girls is from Hat Trick Productions and followed a group of teenagers at a fictional Catholic secondary school in Derry in the mid-1990s, as Northern Ireland engaged in the peace process and tried to leave The Troubles behind. It was Channel 4’s biggest rating scripted comedy since Father Ted back in the 1990s, and its final scene, in which the various characters vote for peace, was up for Memorable Moment today.

The British version of the Emmys is set for Sunday, May 14 with the main ceremony of the BAFTAs taking place in London. While these awards aren’t exactly a, uh, crystal clear crystal ball for the Emmys, they can give some insight into which British shows may make the successful trip across the Atlantic. At the same time, it also gives an insight into which American shows are proving to be the Brits’ particular, uh, cup of tea.
This year’s BAFTA ceremony will take at the Royal Festival Hall and will be hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan. Two shows lead the way in nominations this year, with Ben Whishaw‘s “This is Going to Hurt” and Martin Freeman‘s “The Responder” each receiving six nominations.
Like the Emmys, the BAFTAs split their TV awards into two parts — the main ceremony and an earlier celebration devoted to celebrating the creative arts.

Ben Whishaw and Ambika Mod, the stars of This is Going to Hurt, have scooped the top acting prizes at this year’s Broadcasting Press Guild Awards, while Derry Girls picked up a double.
This is Going to Hurt failed to even land a nomination in Best Drama Series, with that gong going to fellow BBC drama Sherwood, but Whishaw and Mod staved off competition from the likes of Anna Maxwell Martin, Leslie Manville and Gary Oldman to take the major prizes.
Mod’s win will lead to more raised eyebrows at the BAFTA TV jury’s decision to eschew her from this week’s Best Actress nomination list in favor of the likes of Kate Winslet, Sarah Lancashire and Imelda Staunton. Whishaw picked up a BAFTA nod for Best Actor.

Saturday Night Live has come under fire for using “offensive” stereotypes about Irish people in a sketch featuring impersonations of Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson.
Saturday’s (11 March) episode was hosted by Wednesday star Jenna Ortega and began with a cold open sketch set on the Oscars red carpet.
In the sketch, presenters Mario Lopez and “Maria Menounos or Kit Hoover” (Marcello Hernandez and Heidi Gardner) are interviewing celebrities ahead of the awards show, which takes place on Sunday (12 March).
“I’m told that we have the stars of The Banshees of Inisherin, Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson,” Gardner says, with Mikey Day and Molly Kearny then appearing as the pair of Irish actors.
“How do you guys like your chances tonight?” Gardner asks them, with the comedians replying in extremely thick, hard-to-understand accents.

Norman Scott has condemned his portrayal in the BBC’s A Very English Scandal.
The English model was played by Ben Whishaw in the 2018 miniseries. Whishaw won an Emmy, Bafta, and Golden Globe for his performance.
A Very English Scandal saw Hugh Grant play former Liberal leader Jeremy Thorpe, who was acquitted of conspiring with a hitman to kill his alleged ex-lover Scott. Homosexuality was illegal at the time.
Scott appeared on the podcast British Scandal: Jeremy Thorpe, and praised Whishaw’s performance but admitted that he was “very cross” over his portrayal in the drama.
Scott, 83, said: “Ben was being a very good actor, he had met me, he knew me, and I hoped that he would be me…
“I think it was very – I can say it because it’s what I believe – it was a black comedy. It was very unkind. But Ben played me very well.

News that Stephen King’s classic It is getting a prequel series on HBO Max has been met with a hilarious reaction from fans of a very different show.
Pennywise – the terrifying clown most recently portrayed in two films by Bill Skarsgard – is set to return to screens in a prequel series on HBO Max.
Welcome To Derry is based on King’s 1986 novel It and will be directed by Andy Muschietti who was behind 2017’s It and 2019’s It: Chapter Two.
The series is set in Derry, which King has called “Maine’s most haunted city”.
Its title, however, has attracted attention from fans of another Derry-set show: Derry Girls.
Fans were dismayed when Lisa McGee’s hit Channel 4 comedy Derry Girls came to an end with its critically acclaimed third season in 2022.

Vernon Kay has spoken out about his excitement ahead of taking over Ken Bruce’s morning slot on Radio 2.
Bruce, who has hosted on BBC radio for 45 years, announced his departure from the network in January.
After much speculation, Kay was revealed as Bruce’s replacement last week.
As a regular cover host on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show, Kay featured on Monday’s edition (27 February) of the programme to discuss his new role.
“My dad is a lorry driver and I said this when I joined Radio 2 and started standing in for Steve Wright, so we've always had Radio 2 on in the background,” he told Ball.
"It is part of us, it is in our DNA – Ken Bruce is mid-mornings,” Kay continued. “You don't think of any other DJ when you think of that slot.
“Whatever channel you choose to listen to, whoever is on mid-mornings, it's the Ken Bruce slot.

Following Tommy Lee Royce’s (James Norton) escape from prison, the scheming villain and Sergeant Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) had their long anticipated showdown in her kitchen.
“I forgive you,” Tommy told her. “You forgive me?” she spat back, her taser pointed at his chest.
After an agonising face-to-face (summarised in full here), Tommy poured petrol over himself and lit a match, signalling the end of the years-long reign of terror he had over Catherine and her family.
She was later notified of his death via a text that simply read: “Tlr dead.”
Fans of the show have called the finale “absolute perfection”.
Writer Terri White tweeted: “Absolute perfection. Every word. Every breath… The way Sally Wainwright writes villains and victims is entirely radical.

Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee has reacted in total disbelief after Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese revealed he’s watched the show.
Goodfellas and Gangs of New York filmmaker Scorsese said he had been watching the Channel 4 sitcom, set during The Troubles in Northern Ireland, while speaking at the Economic Club of Chicago’s annual black tie dinner, which took place in October.
Now, more than a month after the event, McGee has posted a clip on Twitter of Scorsese discussing the programme, with the caption: “Excuse me while I drop dead and actually die a death.”
In the clip, Scorsese says: “I watched, the other night, Derry Girls?” The crowd can then be heard cheering and clapping, and Scorsese responds by punching the air and saying: “Those nuns!”
Derry Girls follows a group of schoolgirls – and one wee English fella – at a school run by a formidable set of nuns.

It’s 1994, and the people of Northern Ireland are nearly three decades into a violent conflict known as the Troubles. Civilians — thousands of which died during the fray — are generally divided between Protestant unionists, who want to keep the country under United Kingdom control, and Irish Catholics, who call for a united Ireland. Day-to-day life in Derry involve armed military checkpoints, customary bomb disposals, and the constant hum of danger. Family members are in prison. Others are dead. An end to the Troubles is in sight, but for the teenage girls attending Our Lady Immaculate College, this is the only life they’ve ever known. That it may come to an end right as they graduate only instills further anxiety over the responsibilities of adulthood.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for Season 3 of “Derry Girls.”
Season 3 of “Derry Girls” opens with a dramatic montage set to the tune of uilleann pipes, depicting Erin Quinn (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), Orla McCool (Louisa Clare Harland), Clare Devlin (“Bridgerton” star Nicola Coughlan), James Maguire (Dylan Llewellyn) and Michelle Mallon (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell) leaning pensively against walls, playing soccer and doing cartwheels, interspersed with shots of burning cars and soldiers carrying guns. It’s the sort of montage that belongs in a period piece about growing up in Ireland during the ’90s — and, as it’s revealed, the kind that Erin, Orla, Clare, James and Michelle want to be remembered for, as they’ve created it themselves using James’ video camera. “They told us we were young,” Erin intones in a comically ponderous voiceover, “yet we understood the enormity of it. We understood what was at stake. Our fear was replaced with something altogether more terrifying…...

Channel 4 dropped a “Derry Girls” trailer for its third and final season on Thursday, which shows the girls freaking out about their upcoming Gcse tests.
The series, which is set in Northern Ireland in the 1990s, stars Saoirse-Monica Jackson as Erin, Louisa Harland as Orla, Nicola Coughlan as Clare, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell as Michelle, and Dylan Llewellyn as James.
The synopsis for the upcoming season, which doesn’t yet have a premiere date: “While there’s hope in the air that The Troubles may finally be over, their troubles are only just getting started as they get ever closer to adulthood.”

What better way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day than with a first look at Derry Girls Season 3? The hit U.K. Channel 4 comedy — which rose to stateside popularity on Netflix — will come to an end with its upcoming third and final season. Based on creator Lisa McGee’s adolescent years in 1990s Northern Ireland, the series follows teens Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), Orla (Louisa Harland), Clare (Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan), Michelle (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell), and James (Dylan Llewellyn) through their hilarious teen hijinks, all while living through the difficult political conflict known as The Troubles. “We lived on the edge back then. We were young, wild, fearless,” says James in the Season 3 trailer. While the teaser promises more hilarious misadventures — from school plays to attractive plumbers to losing Clare at a train station — the Lady Immaculate College schoolgirls (and boy) will also have to come to terms with their quickly-approaching adulthood.

A first look at the third and final season of “Derry Girls” is finally here — and just in time for St. Patrick’s Day.
U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 has unveiled the first Season 3 still and trailer for the show, which garnered global popularity via Netflix. The drama is created and written by Lisa McGee, who mined her own experiences growing up in Northern Ireland during the Troubles.
While Season 1 observed the gang navigating their teens in 1990s Derry against a backdrop of The Troubles, Season 2 charted the group navigating their parents, parties, love interests and school against the backdrop of a precarious peace process. In Season 3 — which still doesn’t have a launch date on Channel 4 — viewers will see that while Northern Ireland is growing up, “this gang of eejits certainly aren’t anytime soon.”
