The winners of this year’s recipients of the Walter Cronkite Awards had a common theme: Combating misinformation.
So when award sponsor USC Annenberg’s Norman Lear Center held a National Press Club luncheon for the honorees last week, there was a bit of reminder of the stakes: During the ceremony news unfolded of the unsealing of former President Donald Trump’s federal indictment.
Many of the winners reported on Trump and his false claims of a stolen 2020 election, something that he has repeated during his current election campaign. He’s also called the indictment itself the “boxes hoax.”
Martin Kaplan, director of The Norman Lear Center, said, “Disinformation is an apt focus in particular for the Cronkite award, not only because it feels like disinformation is everywhere all at once, but because the namesake of this award is Walter Cronkite” who was known as “the most trusted man in America.

After a chaotic day in court on Wednesday, the judge in Kyle Rittenhouse’s trial encouraged the courtroom, including the jury, to applaud for a defense witness because he was a veteran.
The 18-year-old Rittenhouse is charged with homicide and attempted homicide, among other charges, for killing two people and seriously injuring a third when he brought an Ar-15 to a protest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, during the summer of 2020.
Judge Bruce Schroeder has a reputation for being sympathetic to the defense in cases before him, attorneys who appeared before him told The Washington Post.

As news broke that Tiger Woods was injured in a serious vehicle crash in Los Angeles, cable news networks quickly shifted to nonstop coverage, breaking away from what looked like a day devoted to D.C. politics.
The networks scrambled to book sports reporters and commentators who could talk about the accident, his health history and his impact on the sport. The extent of the coverage reflected Woods’ status as one of the greatest golfers — and athletes — of all time.
“This is a tough guy, a very strong guy…He knows what it takes to endure a significant amount of pain,” sportscaster Jim Gray said on Fox News which, like other networks, provided updates on his condition along with overhead helicopter shots of the neighborhood where the crash occurred, Rancho Palos Verdes, along with shots of the accident scene.

"How do you do it?!" HBO Max / CNN Films have released an official trailer for a journalism documentary called On the Trail, titled in full: On the Trail: Inside the 2020 Primaries. Developed internally by CNN, the doc film takes viewers behind-the-scenes to provide a "front-row seat to history for a glimpse into what it takes to cover a presidential campaign." The focus is on the powerhouse female journalists at CNN, set against the backdrop of one of the wildest elections in American history. Which is a bit of a soft way to describe what's happening. "CNN offered unprecedented access to their coverage, going out of their way to include names news junkies and casual viewers alike have come to know." Including: Dana Bash, Kaitlan Collins, Jessica Dean, Daniella Diaz, Annie Grayer, Kyung Lah, Mj Lee, Abby Phillip, Arlette Saenz, and Jasmine Wright. You’ve just suffered a major defeat, and now you’re surrounded. The enemy is gearing up for a charge. Your leaders are readying the surrender flags. Things are looking grim. So what do you do? Well, we decided to write a Google Doc.
In December 2016, our Google Doc in was called “Indivisible: A Practical Guide to Resisting the Trump Agenda.” As two former congressional staffers, we thought we might be able to help demystify congress a bit and tell people how they could use their own constituent power to fight back against Trumpism.

Update, 7:48 p.m. Pt: CNN’s Lgbtq town hall in Los Angeles was interrupted again by a trans protester, one of several disruptions at the event featuring 2020 presidential candidates.
As CNN’s Don Lemon was on the stage with Beto O’Rourke, a woman who identified herself as Blossom Brown grabbed the microphone and shouted, “Black trans woman are being killed in this country, and you have erased trans women for the last time.”
“Our lives matter. I am an extraordinary black trans woman, and I deserve to be here,” she said.
Lemon took the microphone and responded, “Let me tell you something. The reason that we are here is to validate people like you. That is why we are here.”
She complained that not one black trans woman or man had been given a chance to ask a question during the evening.
