The nation is going through a marijuana revolution, but officials throughout the federal government continue to live in the prohibitionist, anti-drug eras of ages past. But that’s no longer good enough for many lawmakers on Capitol Hill.
A bipartisan group of Senators and Representatives are increasing pressure on the Food and Drug Administration to release and implement new rules for cannabidiol, or Cdb — a non-psychoactive chemical compound found in cannabis — after Congress legalized industrial hemp last year, but lawmakers are increasingly annoyed that officials are dragging their feet. They...

Sen. Susan Collins (R-me) extinguished any lingering hopes that she might cast the deciding vote against Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court on Friday afternoon. As she delivered her lengthy speech on the Senate floor, a crowd-funding site created to fund a Democratic challenge to Collins in 2020 crashed.
“This entire process was up to Collins,” says Amy Halsted, co-director of Maine People’s Alliance, which launched the campaign. “And today she did the wrong thing.”

In the midst of a trade war that’s ensnared our northern neighbor, the Trump administration has granted a Canadian company the ability to do something American marijuana growers are forbidden from doing: Provide marijuana for American researchers to test with the government’s approval. The move has domestic marijuana advocates and growers up in arms, but it’s also riled and perplexed a bipartisan group of lawmakers on Capitol Hill who either view the Trump administration’s move as hypocritical or unpatriotic — or both.
“It’s just ridiculous,” Rep.

We all know Attorney General Jeff Sessions hates marijuana, but it seems he has senior allies within the White House itself who are directing federal agencies to help them vigorously fight against state efforts to legalize marijuana — putting a number of senior administration officials in direct odds with President Trump’s own stated policy of allowing states to decide their own marijuana laws.
Yesterday, Buzzfeed dropped an explosive — and well documented — story on how, within the Trump administration, there is a Marijuana Policy Coordination Committee. According to their report, that...

Donald Trump‘s inauguration won’t be a star-studded affair on Friday — and it’s shaping up to be skippable by many politicians as well.
Though he won the Electoral College by 306 votes to Hillary Clinton’s 236, he’s starting off his presidency with the lowest approval rate in decades — just 40 percent, according to a CNN/Orc survey. (Before he took office in early 2009, Barack Obama’s approval rating was 84 percent, according to the same survey.)
That disapproval has seeped into the Capitol, with 51 members of Congress (at current count) abstaining from Trump’s inauguration and the following festivities.
Most notable is Rep.

Barney Frank is kicking off his retirement with a bang -- and maybe some jazz hands and high notes, too.
The former congressman is gearing up for his New York stage debut -- yes, you read correctly -- as part of the forthcoming Encores! production of the musical "Fiorello!" which opens Jan. 30, the Daily News is reporting.
In a case of art not imitating life, the Democrat will reportedly portray an outspoken conservative senator in a concert version of the Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning 1959 musical, which is loosely based on the life of former New York City Mayor Fiorello Laguardia.
According to New York City Center's website, "'Fiorello!' tells the story of New York’s Mayor Laguardia’s rise from an immigrant’s son to the feisty congressman who brought down the crooked Tammany Hall political machine." The show's best-known songs include "Till Tomorrow," “When Did I Fall In Love?...

Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) has captured an unusual trio of endorsements in the Democratic primary. Actor Tom Hanks, Republican former senator and presidential candidate Bob Dole and Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.) are all backing her in a hotly-contested race against fellow Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio).
All three worked with Kaptur to build the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., The Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports.
"As partners with Congresswoman Kaptur in the long national effort to build the Memorial, we wish her all the best in her campaign for re-election and we urge Ohio voters to support her on March 6," Hanks, Dole and Dingell wrote in a letter.
As Roll Call notes, Kucinich also has his share of Hollywood supporters and friends, including Shirley MacLaine, Sean Penn and Russell Simmons.
Kaptur and Kucinich were pushed into the same district after congressional redistricting eliminated two of Ohio's 18 current seats. The primary...
