Much like Philip Pullman's original novel trilogy, "His Dark Materials" started off playing things close to the vest, so far as it concerns Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) and his endgame. Come season 3, however, the show is done hiding Asriel's true mission and its actual plot behind vaguely religious metaphors. Lyra's bad dad is on a mission to literally slay God in a retelling of John Milton's "Paradise Lost" that features angels, weapons capable of cutting the very fabric of reality, and, most importantly of all, talking polar bears.
Initially, the plan was to bring viewers up to speed on Asriel's doings since the season 1 finale — you know, that whole thing where he sacrificed Lyra's poor friend Roger to create a bridge to another world — with an episode centered on the character in season 2. This one-off outing was penned by head writer Jack Thorne and would've included brand-new...

After two long years, the adaptation of Philip Pullman’s riveting fantasy series His Dark Materials returns to HBO for its wrap-up third season. There are eight episodes airing two each Monday, premiering on December 5. The final season is emotional, philosophical, and action-filled and offers lots of answers and climatic moments starting with Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) gathering an army to take down the Kingdom of Heaven and its regent Metatron (Alex Hassell), whose repressive minions rule the show’s multiverse. McAvoy and star actors Ruth Wilson (Marisa Coulter), Dafne Keen (Lyra), and Amir Wilson (who plays Will) and executive producers Jane Tranter and Dan McCulloch spoke about the season with TV Insider. McAvoy previews that this season, the obsessed Asriel’s goals are “revolution and the emancipation of the human spirit from the oppressive institutional forces of moral judgment.” Also: “multiverse domination and complete submission, ” he playfully adds, mocking his narcissistic character.

We've waited two long years to see how HBO's adaptation of "His Dark Materials" will wrap up Philip Pullman's epic trilogy, and the show finally returns tonight with the fate of multiple worlds hanging in the balance. The series has a tough task in taking on "The Amber Spyglass," making for an incredibly ambitious third and final season. None of Pullman's books are built for an easy adaptation, but the last installment of this trilogy is particularly large in scope, with more fantastical worlds and heady concepts than ever.
Executive producers Jane Tranter and Dan McCulloch are well aware of the time and space needed to properly tell this story. /Film was able to speak with them about season 3 overall and the way they approached something so difficult to take from page to screen. Going into its third season, the HBO series "His Dark Materials" has angels, witches, and oppressive religious systems to contend with. But most intimidating of all, it has the monumental task of adapting the most ambitious and lavish book of the series, "The Amber Spyglass."
"His Dark Materials" season 2 last ended on Lyra Silvertongue (casting off her original last name due to her really messed-up father) and her spiritually-linked daemon Pan (voiced by Kit Connor) being captured and knocked out unconscious by her equally messed-up mother, Mrs. Coulter (Ruth Wilson). William (Amir Wilson), a boy from a world with no daemons (closer to our world), tragically loses his long-missing father (Andrew Scott) to a Magistrate soldier. But Will has now fully accepted his destiny as the Subtle Knife's bearer, wielding the ability to cut through into different dimensions. But this season's great threat is the ruling Magistrate (not subtly based...

His Dark Materials is officially coming back for a third and final season.
HBO and BBC One have renewed the drama for a third run with the eight-episode season set to close the story. The latest season, which is based on Philip Pullman’s novels, begins production in Cardiff, Wales in 2021.
This comes as the second season of the Bad Wolf-produced drama concludes on Monday, December 28 on HBO.
Last month, Bad Wolf co-founder Jane Tranter told Deadline that Jack Thorne and a team of writers were working on scripts and that the series will be based on The Amber Spyglass. In January, HBO programming chief Casey Bloys told Deadline that he was particularly pleased that the drama had been a co-viewing hit with families.
The second season, which consisted of seven episodes due to Covid-19, follows Lyra, played by Dafne Keen, a seemingly ordinary but brave young woman from another world.

Lyra Belacqua’s story is getting a closing chapter.
HBO and the BBC have renewed “His Dark Materials,” the series adaptation of Philip Pullman’s classic novels, for a third and final season. The first two seasons have mirrored the books relatively closely, so it’s no huge surprise the show is being given one last outing to take a crack at “The Amber Spyglass,” the final book in Pullman’s trilogy.
News of the renewal comes less than a week after the season 2 finale is set to drop HBO, and only two days after the curtain call aired in the U.K. Production on the eight-episode third season is slated to begin in Cardiff in 2021.

His Dark Materials will be back with a bang in November as the HBO and BBC big-budget co-production returns for its second season.
HBO will launch the second season of the Bad Wolf-produced adaptation of the Philip Pullman books at 9 p.m. November 16. It will also be available to stream on HBO Max.
This comes as the team behind the series, which includes writer Jack Thorne, are prepping scripts for a possible third season. Although a third run hasn’t been commissioned, the hope on all sides is for it to run for more seasons.
HBO programming chief Casey Bloys told Deadline earlier this year that the first season had performed very well for the network and that he would like to do more. “One of the things that I was hoping for, and the numbers we’re seeing bear this out, it is more of a co-viewing show than we’ve ever had.

This comes as the team behind the series, which includes writer Jack Thorne, are prepping scripts for a possible third season. Although a third run hasn’t been commissioned, the hope on all sides is for it to run for more seasons.

“His Dark Materials,” the multi-universe fantasy trilogy by British author Philip Pullman, has historically proved to be a bit of daemon to adapt for the screen.
Chris Weitz, Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig gave it a crack back in 2007, and the result was a critically-panned, middling box office-performing feature film which, many felt, leant too heavily on the CGI and strayed too far from the source material. But now there is another attempt: the HBO-BBC co-production which brings the feisty young Lyra Belacqua (Dafne Keen) and the icy Mrs. Coulter (Ruth Wilson) to the small screen for the first time. Executive producer Jane Tranter tells Variety that the intention from the moment she began circling the rights in 2015 was to produce a more faithful retelling which brought out “the depth, breadth and layers” of Pullman’s books.

Dubois Records, in cooperation with Mammoth Screen and Masterpiece will release the Victoria – Original Soundtrack digitally on all music streaming platforms to coincide with the Us release of the television series on PBS this coming weekend. The album features the limited series’ original score by multi-bafta and Ivor Novello winning composer Martin Phipps (Woman In Gold, The Keeping Room) and Ruth Barrett (City Of Tiny Lights, Whitechapel) with vocals from the Mediaeval Baebes. Victoria was first aired on ITV in the UK on August 28, 2016.
Phipps says: “The idea was to give Victoria a dynamic voice, an explosive theme through which we could rejoice in her strength & courage. The Mediaeval Baebes were the perfect sound for this. With one foot in the classical world & one in the commercial, they gave Victoria the mixture of refinement & attitude I was after.”
Barrett says: “I started composing from episode 2, weaving in some of Martin...

Evans will reprise the role in four 2-hour episodes, to be filmed in Oxford later in 2012. Also returning from the pilot are Roger Allam (Inspector Fred Thursday), James Bradshaw (Dr Max Debryn) and Abigail Thaw, daughter of original Inspector Morse star John Thaw. "It was fantastic that the audience responded so warmly to Endeavour," said ITV drama's Sally Haynes. I met Gerard at the Filmhouse Cafe for a chat about his psychological, thriller, horror film, 'Tony', which debuted at this years Eiff. Our table got quite a lot of action as we'd sat next to a shelf of free books, you'll see. Check out Tony as soon as you can, it's a very weird and creepy film. You can read my review, which gave it 8/10, here on quietearth.
Simon: One of the first things I want to ask you is, how you would describe 'Tony' in your own words? It's written in the Eiff catalogue as being a horror comedy, but how'd you describe it?
Gerard Johnson: Yeah, I'd describe it more as a character study, but it's kind of about a lonely lost character. I'd describe it as a social-realist horror comedy, or I should say, a social-realist black horror comedy. It's hard to categorize really, which is a strong point.

The Debut film of director Gerard Johnson, upcoming British release Tony has already been compared with the classics Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer and Taxi Driver.
Revolver Entertainment releases Tony in cinemas on February 5 and on DVD on February 8.
Unemployed and unemployable, the title character is a sympathetic recluse with severe social problems, an addiction to VHS action films and a horrible moustache.
His life is interrupted only by his nervous attempts to make friends, which are invariably rebuffed by laughter or contempt. Occasionally he snaps, and violence and murder is the result...
Featuring what's described as a star-making lead performance from Peter Ferdinando, Tony is said to be "dark, brutal, yet bleakly amusing and will stay with you long after you finish watching."
Extras on the DVD will include a commentary with director Gerard Johnson, actor Peter Ferdinando and producer Dan McCulloch; and two short films from Gerard Johnson...
