If you’ve been keeping up with distribution news recently, there’s been one name you’ll have seen pop up again and again: Vertical.
Since the pandemic, the bottom has fallen out of the film business, with more quality indie packages hitting the marketplace than there are distributors willing to take them on. Stepping up, in the years since, to offer many of them a home, is this indie distributor, which appears to be in the midst of its biggest year yet.
Founded in 2012 by Rich Goldberg and Mitch Budin, Vertical comes from humble beginnings, according to partner Peter Jarowey, who notes that the team at one point operated out of “a literal broom closet.” Initially working to establish itself as a resource in securing ancillary revenue for indies, the company has of late has become a theatrical player in its own right. Aspiring from the beginning to be a purveyor of “commercial,...

With awards season offering different twists and turns, some independent distributors are using this time of influx to get their films ahead of the fray. Variety has learned exclusively that Vertical Entertainment has submitted “Miss Juneteenth” — from writer and director Channing Godfrey Peoples — for Academy Awards consideration, and put it on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences streaming platform. This marks the first time that Vertical Entertainment has submitted a film on the Academy’s streaming platforms.
“Miss Juneteenth” has received critical acclaim this year after its theatrical and VOD release in June. The film hopes to navigate an Oscar season where many movies and performances are shifting out of the eligibility year due to the Covid-19 pandemic and theater closures. The film may be able to make some headway in categories like original screenplay, or it could be a dark horse entry for star Nicole Beharie in the acting category.

We’ve been excited to get a look at Josh Trank’s upcoming movie Fonzo for a while now.
The film, Trank’s follow up to his disastrous Fantastic Four reboot, is set to portray notorious mob boss Al Capone (Tom Hardy) as the “ruthless businessman and bootlegger who ruled Chicago with an iron fist,” having earned a reputation as “the most infamous and feared gangster of American lore” but the story is to follow a less explored and potentially far weirder aspect of the gangster’s life, as the effects of syphilis turn past to present, and “harrowing memories of his violent and brutal origins melt into his waking life.”
It all sounded pretty good, and after some first images emerged of a heavily made up Hardy in character as Capone, it looked like Trank had found himself quite the project. A handful of suitably impressive actors were revealed...

A major management restructuring has seen Blockbuster executive Matthew Smith take over as president of Genius Products, reporting to CEO Trevor Drinkwater.
Genius, majority owned by the Weinstein Co., also has upped three key executives: Mitch Budin, Christine Martinez and Michael Radiloff.
The moves were made in anticipation of further growth as the company continues to build its portfolio through new and expanding brand and content partnerships as well as co-productions.
Genius Products chairman Stephen Bannon said Drinkwater is positioning the company "for Phase 2 of our aggressive growth strategy, which will focus on revenue growth and improvements in margin through brand and content partnerships, content production, intellectual property ownership and the acquisition of additional revenue streams."
Smith, who assumes the presidency effective Jan. 1, has been at Blockbuster for 17 years, most recently as senior vp media development and studios. At Genius, he will lead the company's continued retail expansion as well as the co-production and distribution of Genius films.
