Wes Anderson was not in Los Angeles on Sunday night to accept his Oscar for Best Live-Action Short Film. But it turned out he had a pretty good excuse. The filmmaker was in Germany, prepping his next film, “The Phoenician Scheme,” which is set to begin shooting (checks pocket watch quirkily) today!

As part of Variety’s 100 Greatest Shows of All Time issue, we asked writers on our staff to name their favorite cult shows — series that may lack the clout, the following, or the prestige to quite notch an entry on our list, but ones for which our writers have a special fondness. Here are seven shows that are, to us, the greatest.
Alias
So the central mythology, about the mystical inventor Milo Rambaldi, came to little as the show went on. No big deal. On “Alias,” it was all about the ride. That’s meant very literally: Each week, the show crash-landed into an episode-ending cliffhanger. As played by a luminous, game, and utterly committed Jennifer Garner, superspy double agent Sydney Bristow changed her loyalties, her allies, and her wigs. The only constant in her life was chaos, into which a writing team led by J.J. Abrams thrust her week after week.

In a period defined by YouTube Shorts dominance, the leading channels in this week’s U.S. Top 50 all incorporate long-form videos in one way or another. Some of those channels can trace their beginnings to Shorts, but they are adopting multiformat approaches to reach as many viewers as possible.
Based on the family-friendly nature of the U.S. top five entrants, it would seem that YouTube’s youngest users are still the drivers of the platform’s most significant viewership trends.

The U.K.’s Espresso Media Intl. has picked up Shannon Cohn’s “Below the Belt,” a documentary executive produced by Hillary Clinton and Rosario Dawson that explores problems in the U.S. healthcare system that disproportionately affect women.
The film, whose executive producers also include actresses Corinne Foxx (“Dollface”) and Mae Whitman (“Good Girls”), premiered on PBS. Espresso Media is handling global sales for the title outside of the U.S. and will present it to buyers at the forthcoming Mipcom in Cannes.
“Below the Belt” examines healthcare problems that overwhelmingly affect women, such as societal taboos, gender bias, misinformed doctors and financial barriers to care, and how millions are effectively silenced.
The film also explores the devastating impact of endometriosis, which affects one in nine women globally and is considered one of the most common diseases that most people have never heard of. Endometriosis causes tissue similar to the...

Warning: This article discusses major spoilers for the "Ahsoka" season 1 finale.
Even as far back as when "Ahsoka" was first announced and it became more and more apparent that this new show would act as a sequel to "Star Wars Rebels," I've had one obvious question burning at the forefront of my mind: Why make this into a live-action series, rather than another animated one? After all, fans first fell head-over-heels in love with heroes like Ahsoka, Ezra, Sabine, Hera, and Kanan because of their distinctive and wonderfully expressive character designs, their pitch-perfect voice actors, and the grand adventures they experienced together within a medium that allowed for endless amounts of creativity and imagination. To strip such core traits away from these Rebels, recast (most of) them with a bunch of lookalikes, and drop them in unfamiliar and jarring live-action environments is to misunderstand what made them so appealing in the first place.

Watch out! This post contains spoilers.
The moment I was sure I did not like "Ahsoka" came when Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) finally reunites with Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi) in episode six. The season had been building to this major moment; Sabine had traveled so far, made so many complicated decisions and promises, and believed for so long that Ezra was still out there, alive. Ezra was her only family left, she'd said. So seeing him again is the only thing that matters.
And then when she finally finds him. . . they share a tepid hug. That's it. Ezra says he's surprised she found him, but zero surprise is evident from the way he actually says that. When he starts to ask how she did it - crucially lacking any astonishment or confusion or real emotion accompanying the question - she says, "I just want to be happy that I found you.

“Ahsoka” is quietly going down as one of the best pieces of “Star Wars” content we’ve had in years alongside “Andor.” Playing largely as a live-action fifth season of the cherished animated series “Rebels,” this Disney+’s hit takes place after “Return of the Jedi” when the Galactic Empire has fallen. However, all is not as well in the galaxy as it might seem as former Jedi Knight Ahsoka Tano begins to uncover a plot to re-introduce the Empire into a galaxy still finding its feet amidst a new order.
A large part of the show’s success should be attributed to Rosario Dawson, who plays Ahsoka as wise, calm, and assured in the face of so much uncertainty and chaos. Dawson brings to life this live-action version of Ahsoka with maturity, sophistication, and a deftness of touch that befits the character’s arc from bratty youth in the...

Rising experimental-pop musician Jean Dawson has looped in Sza to collaborate on his new single, “No Szns.”
Over dreamy guitars, Dawson finds himself stuck in a cycle of sun and sex. “In the spring, you can’t hear a thing/All the birds and bees,” he sings. “Nobody think in the summer time/ People off the brink/In California, we ain’t got no seasons/ All the same to me/ ’Cause in the heat, like to press repeat/ Every day is every day.” Sza pops up for the second verse, adding her own anxious twist on the themes.
Since the release of her 2022 album Sos, Sza has kept herself busy collaborating with other artists, most recently on acoustic version of her song “Snooze” with Justin Bieber, as well as on Drake’s “Slime You.” She also recently launched a new leg of tour dates that runs through the middle of October.

Fresh off two new tracks with Drake and Justin Bieber, Sza recently guested on genre-bending performer Jean Dawson’s new song “No Szns.” The stirring single is driven by grungy guitar and reflective singing by the duo. They are both the song’s only writers, though it was produced by Dawson and a handful of other musicians. Towards the track’s end, they share the chorus: “In the spring, you can’t hear a thing all the birds and bees/Nobody thinks/In the summertime people off the brink/In California,...

Exclusive: Byron Allen’s Freestyle Digital Media has acquired North American VOD rights to Our Words Collide, a poetry-themed documentary executive produced by Rosario Dawson that will be released in early 2024.
Directed and produced by Jordan W. Barrow and Matt Edwards, the film highlights the poets of Get Lit, a non-profit organization in Los Angeles, which uses the art form to educate and empower young people. Juxtaposing vérité scenes and intimate footage, self-shot by the poets, with stylized poetry performances and animation, it more specifically spotlights five spoken word poets as they navigate their final year at high school, exploring many challenges that face young people today — including identity, expression, transitioning into adulthood and overcoming mental health issues — through the unique prism of their poetry.
Originally premiering at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, where it won the Adl Stand Up Award, Our Words Collide‘s other EPs are Diane Luby Lane and Samuel Curtis.

“Haunted Mansion,” Disney’s second attempt at adapting its beloved theme park attraction as a live-action feature, will soon find a home on Disney+. The new movie — released theatrically this past July and starring Lakeith Stanfield, Owen Wilson, Rosario Dawson and Tiffany Haddish — will debut on Disney’s streaming platform on Oct. 4, just in time for Halloween spooky season.
In this “Haunted Mansion,” Dawson plays a young single mother who moves into the titular abode, which is stuffed (of course) with 999 happy haunts. She calls on a variety of paranormal experts, including Stanfield (who does New Orleans ghost tours), Wilson (a priest) and Haddish (a psychic), along with Danny DeVito as a local history professor with a keen knowledge of the house and its tangled history.
Also, Jamie Lee Curtis shows up as Madame Leota, the iconic Haunted Mansion character (she’s the iconic medium-in-the-crystal ball from the attraction). As you might expect,...

“Truth be told, the PG-13-rated feature — which marks the studio’s second big-screen adaptation of its spooky theme park attraction — isn’t really that scary,” Variety film critic Peter Debruge wrote in his review. “Director Justin Simien (‘Dear White People’) leans more on comedy than horror,...

This post contains spoilers for the eighth and ninth episodes of "Foundation" season 2.
Apple TV+ has released "Long Ago, Not Far Away," the ninth and penultimate episode of the second season of "Foundation," and in it, we get both a fairy tale-like story about how Demerzel (Laura Birn) came to be involved with the original Cleon as well as an expansive space battle where it's not clear which side you should be rooting for.
According to director Roxann Dawson, that space battle was meant to make the viewer emotionally conflicted. "I think that the messiness and the muckiness of war is that there are human beings involved in war. And if you really get down to who the human beings are, it is hard to know who to root for because they're all just trying to do what's right," Dawson told me in an interview about her work on the second season.

It’s now been well over a month since the summer premiere of Disney’s new Haunted Mansion movie in theaters, which opened to just $24 million domestically back in late July.
How has the movie been performing in the weeks since, you might be wondering?
As we inch closer to the Halloween season, Haunted Mansion has now managed to scare up $100 million worldwide, with $64 million of that total made here in the United States.
Unfortunately, the problem with Haunted Mansion is that Disney spent more than $100 million on the film’s production budget alone – and that’s not counting a big marketing spend.
According to Wikipedia, the film’s reported production budget was around $150 million, which means Haunted Mansion will definitely not be profitable in theaters.
Disney is likely hoping the film will drive Disney+ subscribers this Halloween season, but at this time we haven’t yet been provided with...

To prepare for her role in Disney+'s Ahsoka, actress Rosario Dawson had to train vigorously, and the star revealed the details of the insane schedule she had to follow.
Ahsoka is currently seeing great success on Disney+ as the premiere was seen by around 14 million viewers in its first week on the streaming service.
A lot goes into making a character such as Ahsoka Tano come to life, however. In December 2022, Dawson revealed just how intensive the makeup process alone was, detailing that "it was a three-hour process" that sometimes had to begin "at 4:30 [or] 5 o'clock in the morning."

Produced by and starring Margot Robbie, Barbie (read our review Here) isn’t only the biggest movie to come out in 2023, having earned having earned more than $1.3 billion at the box office, but it also happens to be Warner Bros’ all time highest-grossing global release. While that Robbie project rakes in the dough, American Horror Story casting director Eric Dawson, who casts the long-running FX anthology series with his partners Robert J. "Star Trek" has a long and proud history of having its star actors make the leap to the other side of the camera and flourish as directors in their own right. None other than Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy, took the reins on both "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" and its follow-up, "The Voyage Home" -- not to mention the various other films he would go on to direct (and almost direct), too. Jonathan Frakes, who portrayed the irrepressible William Riker on "The Next Generation" and "Star Trek: Picard," also tried his hand at directing and would quickly become a franchise regular in the director's chair throughout various other "Trek" shows and movies, as well. But "Star Trek: Voyager" gave way to a truly unique career, which saw Roxann Dawson go from playing the fiery half-Klingon, half-human B'Elanna Torres to finding great success as a gun-for-hire television director.

Quentin Tarantino recruited star Rosario Dawson for his 2007 feature Death Proof. While filming, the actor saw a link between Death Proof and a former Brad Pitt movie that allowed her to realize an old fantasy.

Dawson was determined to star in Tarantino’s 2007 Grindhouse feature no matter what. Death Proof saw Kurt Russell playing a serial killer who murdered unsuspecting victims with his car. Dawson was tapped to audition for one of the many women Russell’s character would target. Tarantino and his Grindhouse partner Robert Rodriguez would test Dawson out for the role. But initially, Dawson felt she left a pretty poor impression on the filmmakers with her audition.

In the 15 years since Ahsoka Tano was first introduced in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, she has appeared in many other shows like Star Wars: Rebels, The Mandalorian, and most recently The Book of Boba Fett. Her wit, Force-wielding skills, and her desire to do good for the Galaxy even after leaving the Jedi Order have made her a fan-favorite character with fans eager to see her in a solo series.
Because Ahsoka has been involved in so many eras throughout Star Wars history from The Clone Wars to the New Republic, there are plenty of characters, both familiar and otherwise, that we can expect to see throughout the series. Ahsoka will feature the return of several Rebels and Clone Wars characters, as well as the introduction of new characters we haven’t yet seen in canon before.

Margot Robbie could’ve starred in American Horror Story: Asylum as she auditioned for a role in the horror anthology series.
Casting director Eric Dawson opened up about seeing Robbie in action during a test for the second season of the FX series back in 2012.
“Margot has a lot of ‘it’ factors. That’s the tough thing for casting directors who aren’t in the room [anymore] with actors,” Dawson said in an interview with In the Envelope: The Actor’s Podcast.
Dawson continued, “Margot is probably one of my favorite auditions of all time, and it was right before she broke out. She was such a star. It was crazy, her star appeal when she walked in the room.”
AHS: Asylum aired for 13 episodes in 2012 and although Robbie didn’t get the part in the series, she would go on to star in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street.

Margot Robbie came very close to landing a role in “American Horror Story” season 2 over 10 years ago.
The Australian actress, 33, auditioned back in 2012 for “Asylum” – which saw Adam Levine and Jenna Dewan make cameos in the premiere – but ultimately never landed a part in the anthology series. In a new interview with Backstage magazine’s “In the Envelope: The Actor’s Podcast”, the show’s casting director, Eric Dawson – who always knew Robbie was “a star” – looked back on her bittersweet audition.
“Margot is probably one of my favourite auditions of all time,” Dawson admitted, noting that it took place “right before she broke out” in 2013’s “The Wolf of Wall Street”.

This Star Wars: Ahsoka review contains spoilers.
Ahsoka Episodes 1 and 2
Since its announcement, Ahsoka has had fans of The Clone Wars and Rebels in a frenzy awaiting the return of the Ghost Crew to the small screen in vivid live action. Is the show a worthy continuation of Ahsoka’s saga? And does it cater to those unfamiliar with this particular corner of the Star Wars universe?
Judging from the two-episode premiere of the Disney+ series, the answers are two emphatic yeses. There’s no disconnect between the live-action characters and their animated counterparts, and while Dave Filoni and company take care to preserve the continuity between the show and its predecessors, there’s more than enough here between the writing and the performances for newcomers to get a good idea of who these people are.

“Star Wars: Ahsoka” paid tribute to late star Ray Stevenson, who died on May 21, in its series premiere on Tuesday.
An end card before the credits in the first episode read: “For our friend Ray.”
Stevenson completed filming on “Ahsoka” before his death at age 58. He plays an original character Baylan Skoll, a Force user who aligns himself with Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen). Skoll is the master to Shin Hati (Ivanna Sakhno); in fact, the first episode is titled “Master and Apprentice.”
Skoll is a formidable warrior who wields an orange lightsaber. In various trailers, he’s seen dispatching New Republic guards and dueling with Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) herself.
During Star Wars Celebration back in April, Stevenson shared with TheWrap how excited he was to be joining the live action series and holding a lightsaber for the first time.
“The first time was a costume camera test,” he recalled.

During Star Wars Celebration back in April, Stevenson shared with TheWrap how excited he was to be joining the live action series and holding a lightsaber for the first time.
“The first time was a costume camera test,” he recalled.

Over the course of three decades, Rosario Dawson has had an incredible acting career. She got her start in the edgy 1995 indie film "Kids," which helped her gain notoriety as a young artist. Throughout the early to mid-2000s, Dawson became a household name following her roles in films like "Josie and the Pussycats," "Men in Black II," and "Rent." She also has notably starred in film adaptations of comic books, including "Sin City" and Netflix's Marvel TV series. Most recently, Dawson can be seen in the Disney+ series "Ahsoka" and "Haunted Mansion," which premiered in July 2023.
When she isn't occupied with acting jobs, though, Dawson keeps her personal life under the radar. Since being in the public eye, Dawson has been linked to comedian Eric André and politician Cory Booker. Currently, she's dating Nnamdi Okafor, whom she met in 2022. Rosario Dawson’s starring role in Disney+’s Ahsoka, premiering Aug. 22 and based on a character from Cartoon Network’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars, is not her first time bringing an animated figure to life — she played bassist Valerie Brown in Universal-MGM’s Josie and the Pussycats, the directorial debut of Can’t Hardly Wait screenwriters Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan.
Based on the Archie Comics series that spawned the 1970s cartoon, the 2001 film centers on a female pop-rock group plucked from obscurity in Riverdale. Tara Reid, then 24, was cast first as drummer Melody Valentine following her turn in American Pie. Rachael Leigh Cook (She’s All That), 19, nabbed the part of frontwoman Josie McCoy over Zooey Deschanel and Maggie Gyllenhaal.
For Val, Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds — who produced the gold-selling soundtrack — encouraged the filmmakers to consider a music star, and Aaliyah, TLC’s Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes and Beyoncé were among those to audition.

Plot: Set after the fall of the Empire, Star Wars: Ahsoka follows the former Jedi Knight Ahsoka Tano as she investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy.
Review: Disney and Lucasfilm need a win. After the box office drubbing of Indiana Jones and The Haunted Mansion and perceived MCU burnout, the House of Mouse needs badly to reclaim the early success of The Mandalorian. While Andor was critically acclaimed, both The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi were divisive amongst fans and critics. With the industry still at a standstill due to the ongoing writer and actor strikes, the latest Star Wars live-action series, Ahsoka, needs to thrive despite no interviews or publicity from the cast and crew. Luckily, Dave Filoni’s continuation of stories featuring characters from the animated series The Clone Wars and Rebels speaks for itself. Ahsoka is exactly the Star Wars production that fans have been hoping for,...

‘Ahsoka’ Review: Rosario Dawson Shines as ‘Star Wars’ Series Juggles Exposition and Lightsaber Duels
What a long, strange journey it’s been for Ahsoka Tano. The new series centered on Anakin Skywalker’s former Padawan is a solid entry in Lucasfilm’s expanding “Star Wars” roster that should reward fans who’ve waited patiently for her turn in the spotlight, but may prove a harder sell for those coming in cold.
In terms of her role in the “Star Wars” universe, Ahsoka has been kicking around since 2008, when she made her debut in the “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” animated feature film (and subsequent series). As voiced by Ashley Eckstein, the character – unseen and unmentioned in the prequel trilogy – was a retcon by creator George Lucas to make Anakin’s fated transformation into the villainous Darth Vader that much more heart-wrenching. And it worked.
Anakin’s relationship with Ahsoka – evolving from annoyance to acceptance to affection over the course of seven seasons of “The...

Dave Filoni’s lengthy tenure with Lucasfilm has seen its highs (Star Wars Rebels, the later seasons of The Clone Wars) and lows (the Clone Wars film, The Bad Batch). But even when his storytelling doesn’t quite work, it never compromises its heart.
Fortunately, Star Wars: Ahsoka, which premieres tonight at 9/8c on Disney+ (with its first two episodes), ranks among the writer-director’s best credits.

For those with renewed interest in the Star Wars franchise after last year’s sublime “Andor” (like yours truly), let me make clear right off the bat: “Ahsoka” is not “Andor.” The most recent Disney+ series set in a galaxy far, far away feels the same distance removed from Tony Gilroy’s taut, visceral, and trenchant first season. Yes, both are Star Wars shows, both are spinoffs, and both start with the same letter, but only one appears interested in associating its top-of-the-alphabet title with its affiliated grade.
On paper, those hoping for A-level material have good reason to do so. Created by Dave Filoni (a long-time Lucasfilm favorite), “Ahsoka” follows in the footsteps of the acclaimed “Rebels” animated series (which Filoni also helmed), and the new series features an accomplished cast led by Rosario Dawson in the title role. Toss in the recent success of “Andor” and one could...
