Leading South Korean actor Yoo Ah-in, star of “Burning,” “The Throne” and Netflix series “Hellbound,” must report to the police on Friday in connection with the alleged use of a variety of drugs.
Allegations of Yoo’s drug use emerged a month ago and he has previously spoken with authorities. The Yonhap news agency now specifies that he will be considered as a criminal suspect when he presents himself to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency on Friday. It is unclear whether Yoo will be formally arrested at that time.
Yoo became a person of interest in early February after the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety revealed that he had bought suspicious quantities of the sedative Propofol in a series of purchases starting in 2021. Propofol is a strong sedative that can also be used as an anesthetic. The authorities have looked into several doctors’ offices and clinics in Seoul that may have administered the drug.

“Seoul Vibe”, the newest film directed by Moon Hyun-sung (whose previous works include 2012 period sports drama “As One” and 2017 even more period crime-mystery “The King’s Case Note”), certainly promises a lot of fun. It is a period piece set in the politically interesting times in recent history, and an action comedy with a lot of car chases. Regarding those things, it is a bit of pity that it came to us via Netflix, meaning only on the small screens, since a movie theatre feels like a natural setting for watching such a flick.
We meet our protagonists, Dong-wook and Joon-gi (Ong Seong-wu) at the end of their mission in Saudi Arabia where they were tasked by their Korean boss with transporting guns and ammo across the desert in the back of a pick-up truck. While the Busan International Film Festival was busily hailing a return to normality the slump at South Korea’s commercial box office deepened dramatically over the most recent weekend.
Cinemagoing nationwide was worth only 4.20 million between Friday and Sunday, the lowest weekend total since April and a time before Korean cinemas shed their Covid restrictions.
The weekend’s top film “Life Is Beautiful” managed the lowest first place score of any film this year, with a weekend haul of just 777,000, according to data from Kobiz, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic).
To its credit, the film climbed from second place in its fourth weekend on release, but it only overtook a “Confidential Assignment 2: International” that has been on release for two months, and its four-week cumulative amounts to just 5.44 million.
“Confidential Assignment 2” slipped 60 with a 661,000 weekend score and occupied second slot. After seven weeks on release,...

Korean indie production house, Imtv is developing and will produce a drama series based on the New York Times best-selling novel, “The Island of Sea Women” by Lisa See.
The story is set largely on the remote Korean island of Jeju, among the community of ‘haenyo,’ women who earn a living by free diving for mollusks, seaweed and other sea life from the depths of the ocean.
Representatives of a rare semi matriarchal society, the women work while the menfolk typically stay at home, though property is passed down along male lines.
Celebrated activist and Nobel Prize-winner Malala recently boarded a documentary project about the haenyo of Jeju that is set up at the A24 U.S. indie studio.
See’s wholly minutely-researched, but fictional, story is an evocative tale of two best friends whose bonds are both strengthened and tested over decades by forces beyond their control. The best-selling...

The Movie: "Burning"
Where You Can Stream It: Kanopy (Free), Pluto TV or Tubi (Free with ads)
The Pitch: An aspiring writer reconnects with a young woman he knew growing up, only to become mired in head games with her mysterious rich friend as she disappears without a trace.
In the wrong hands, ambiguity can be a cop-out and a crutch for weak storytelling. There are times when "open to interpretation" feels like code for "not a lot going on." While rewatching "Burning" this week, it occurred to me that part of the reason its narrative works so well and remains so tense and haunting is because, on one level, it's all about how we interpret life's ambiguities.

Netflix has unveiled footage from “Seoul Vibe,” a Korean original movie that will release on Aug. 26, 2022. The action film’s retro look harks back to the 1980s when South Korea was leaving military rule in the rear view mirror and experiencing a new kind of cool.
The emphasis is on breathtaking driving sequences, classic vehicles, popping visuals and a groovy soundtrack.
Directed by Moon Hyun-sung, the stylish heist-action film focuses on a crew of gearheads who team up to bust a crime ring as the South Korean capital gets ready to host the 1988 Olympics.
In the days leading up to this Summer Olympics, a crew of drivers and mechanics called Sanggye-dong Supreme Team uncovers some fishy business involving a VIP slush fund. Together, Yoo Ah-in (as a supreme driver with perfect drifting skills), Koh Kyung-Pyo (as a club DJ), Lee Kyu Hyung (as the human navigator), Park Ju-hyun (as a...

Burning (Lee Chang-dong)
After Poetry, it makes sense that Lee Chang-dong would find himself interested in deconstructing another literary genre: the murder mystery. Adapting Haruki Murakami’s short story “Barn Burning” for the screen, the South Korean master has created something that feels akin to a real page turner, with each cut, the tensions, and the mystery rise as we become desperate to know whatever happened to Shin Hae-mi (Jeon Jong-seo), the young woman who went missing, leaving her childhood friend Lee Jong-su (Yoo Ah-in) searching for her. With pulpy characters, including a delicious Steven Yeun as a mysterious Gatsby-like figure, and a dark sense of humor, the film also serves as a study of class and the way in which the...

Let’s be honest: 2021 was one of the worst years Korean cinema had in recent times. One would’ve hoped that they would have built upon the brilliant couple years that 2019 ad 2020 were but sadly that wasn’t to be. The pandemic situation did not help, with many production houses deciding to pull scheduled releases, halting production or waiting on things to calm down before releasing some projects that have big money riding on them. Even on the indie cinema front, which actually thrived in 2021 due to the lack of mainstream releases, did not manage to impress with what little out there was.
Things however do seem to be on the up with this year, as a few postponed releases are finally getting rescheduled and seeing theatrical releases. New releases are also being talked about and promotional material for some long gestating projects is also being circulated. Without further ado,...

Arcane and Korean supernatural series Hellbound have jumped to the top of Netflix’s new weekly top ten television list.
The animated series, which is based on the League of Legends videogame, was watched by Netflix subscribers for 38.4M hours between November 15 and 21. But it was outgunned by Netflix’s latest Korean thriller, Hellbound, which was watched a total of 43.5M hours in the same period.
Hellbound, which stars Yoo Ah-in and Kim Hyun-Joo, is about a group of supernatural angels appearing out of nowhere to condemn people to hell.
It was another big week for foreign-language titles on the streamer with the second season of Colombian telenovela The Queen of Flow being watched for 38.6M hours, beating the second season of Tiger King, which with 30M hours watched was the second top English-language title.

With the success of shows like "Squid Game" and "Hellbound," 2021 has been a huge year for South Korean horror on Netflix. Based on "The Hell," a digital comic written by Yeon Sang-ho and Choi Kyu-seok, "Hellbound" is about a nation learning to cope with a new phenomenon of unearthly beings showing up and dishing out bloody condemnation to those deemed sinners, leading to the rise of a religious sect led by Jung Jin-soo (Yoo Ah-in) founded on divine justice. From the official synopsis:

Hellbound has a stellar script and gorgeous directorial execution from creator Yeon Sang-ho, but those elements would only go so far without a good cast to support the dramatic story. Luckily, the six-part Netflix series has an impressive ensemble to ground its supernatural narrative. Let’s talk about who all of these actors are, and where you might have seen them before—or where you should watch them next…
Yoo Ah-in as Jeong Jin-soo
Hellbound character: Yoo Ah-in plays New Truth cult leader Jeong Jin-soo with disturbing charisma, constantly keeping the characters and viewers on edge as to what his true motives might be. For me, Yoo was the standout performer in a stellar cast.
What to watch next: Yoo Ah-in is a 35-year-old actor who has appeared in a variety of roles prior to his unsettling turn on Hellbound. If you’re looking to see him in another role,...

This Hellbound review is based on the first three episodes of the Netflix series. It contains minor spoilers.
We’re all going to die, but most of us don’t know when, how, or what will happen to us (if anything) after the inevitable event. This is a reality we all live with, and that much of modern life under capitalism actively encourages us to ignore. Hellbound, Netflix‘s six-part supernatural horror from Train to Busan director Yeon Sang-ho, asks: what happens when we are forced to face that reality, not only on a personal level but a societal one. It’s a particularly poignant premise in a world that has seen more than five million deaths from Covid in under two years, but it’s an inherently timeless one too, previously explored with similar intensity in standout series The Leftovers. Hellbound, which drops on Friday, does a superb job of exploring the difficult,...

Korean director Hong Eui-jeong’s debut feature “Voice of Silence” stood out at Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival as the year’s best film from its Cheval Noir main competition section. The film, about two men who clean up after an organized crime organization, has enjoyed an impressive international festival run, having built up strong buzz as a project when it was selected to Venice’s Biennale College Cinema program in 2016.
“In a film festival that’s known as a melting pot of genres, ‘Voice of Silence’ feels like an excellent representative for the top prize in the Cheval Noir section. It’s earnest and sincere in tone but also unpredictable and experimental, impossible to pin down, and truly idiosyncratic,” said the jury in a statement accompanying the announcement.
