“America’s Got Talent” continued season 18 on August 8 with the final two-hour showcase of first round performances in “Auditions 9.” There are no changes to judges’ dais this summer with executive producer Simon Cowell and long-time judge Howie Mandel taking their place on the ends of the table. Heidi Klum returns as well, as does Sofia Vergara who took a break when “All-Stars” aired earlier this year. Hosting duties are entrusted to the lively Terry Crews once again.
In the audition phase of “AGT,” an act needs at least three of the four judges to give them a “yes” vote to advance to the next round. If two or more judges buzz the act, they are immediately eliminated. Each judge and Crews had one chance to hit the “golden buzzer” and send an act straight through to the live performances.

"Grandma has an order to maintain." 1091 Pictures already opened this odd dark comedy, psychological thriller mashup titled Keeping Company back in June (on VOD). We're just catching up with this trailer now and it's worth a quick look anyway. A fateful chain of events begins to unravel after two brash insurance salesmen go knocking on the wrong door and find themselves trapped inside of a serial killer's basement, putting their lives and their jobs on the line. Reviews praise the film: "A crime, a horror, a comedy, and even a thriller, Keeping Company taps into the best elements of cinema to deliver a deep examination of greed, capitalism, and the wealthy, all while remaining entertaining along the way." The distributor says it "mixes ruthless corporate salesmen with vicious suburban serial killers and asks if you can tell the difference." Sounds like some messed up fun! Starring Jacob Grodnik, Devin Das,...

Last March, I, like hundreds of thousands of other people, found myself laid off. For the first time in years, I actually had time to think, but ironically, I thought a lot about work. It’s kind of depressing how so much of our lives revolve around working. What’s worse is that for many of us, if we want any recognition, any hope of a raise or promotion, or sometimes even to just keep our jobs, we have to dedicate more and more of our lives to outdo our coworkers. If you’ve ever had a job that just sucked the life right out of you, check out Keeping Company and it will make you feel a whole lot better about your situation. No matter how badly your day went, you probably didn’t end up in a serial killer’s basement.

Whether you love the Sylvester Stallone-starring arm wrestling comedy “Over the Top” or think, “eh, maybe I don’t need a Sylvester Stallone-starring arm wrestling comedy in my life,” there’s a new option that will be more appealing: Maureen Bharoocha’s “Golden Arm,” which that it should please every stripe of arm wrestling comedy fan. Aided by a go-for-broke performance by star Mary Holland — consistently the best thing in many projects, and here finally getting the lead role she deserves — “Golden Arm” might be destined for the same sort of cult status as Sly’s version, and that’s just fine for this charming indie comedy.
Written by screenwriting duo Ann Marie Allison and Jenna Milly, who make their feature debut with the film, “Golden Arm” ably contorts the usual sports film tropes — an unlikely contender, a big final match, plenty of personal demons — into a new take on the genre.
