The Money Heist(La Casa de Papel) gang might’ve pulled off their heist at last, but that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the story. The series’ spin-off — by Money Heist creator Álex Pina and his Sky Rojo collaborator, Esther Martínez Lobato — is centered around the character Berlin (Pedro Alonso), long before he finds out about his terminal diagnosis and takes the Royal Mint of Spain hostage. Starring Alonso, Julio Peña, and Begoña Vargas, Berlin follows the titular character as he attempts one of his most extraordinary heists yet.
“It’s a trip through the golden age of the character, when he robbed around Europe crazy in love,” Pina told Netflix.

“There are really only two things that can turn a bad day into a great one: The first is love. But to be honest, that’s not for today. My third wife just dumped me. The second is a heist worth millions of euros,” future Spanish Mint robber Berlin, played again by Pedro Alonso, says at the very beginning of “Berlin,” the spinoff of from Money Heist (“La Casa de Papel”) which Netflix drops Dec. 29.
More precisely, in “Berlin,” he aims with his gang to steal €44 million’s ($47.5 million) worth in 63 jewels from 34 cities across Europe – Zurich, Milan, Saint Petersburg, and so on – in just one night, as they come together in Paris’ biggest auction house.
Netflix has also shared in exclusivity with Variety one of the very first images from “Berlin.”

Sky Rojo is a thriller series created by Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato starring Verónica Sánchez, Lali Espósito and Yany Prado.
Sky Rojo re-does itslef in this third, last and almost melancholic season in a story that wishes to be redone as it finishes and manages to do so with the force and personality of a series which you will either love or hate precisely because of its force, provocation and characters at their edgiest.
Sky Rojo is an attractive combination of a thriller that is full of thugs and a road movie, also tough about some girls who escape from a bordello and leave behind an endless series of bodies, persecutions and situations that are embarrassing, hot, romantic and mad… a combination that has delighted many and, because of its humor which sometimes crosses a line between correctness, has not become popular with the more “family style” audience.

Diego Ávalos, Netflix’s VP of original content in Spain, distinctly remembers the encounter that led to his company licensing what would become its most watched non-English-language series, Spanish drama “Money Heist” (“La Casa de Papel”).
The executive’s first in-person meeting with series creator Álex Pina was a dizzying, fateful whirlwind. “He was rushing through this hotel, and he ran up to me and threw a pen drive in my hand and said, ‘You have to watch this — it’s my new show,’ and then he rushed off just as quickly.”
After the frantic rendezvous, Ávalos boarded a plane to Los Angeles and popped the drive into his laptop. When his feet hit the ground in California, he knew his next Spanish acquisition had to be “Money Heist.”

Telco giant Telefonica’s Movistar Plus, Spain’s biggest pay TV player, is putting through a major restructuring, aimed at capitalizing on its Spanish market preeminence in an age of full-on global studio streamer dominance.
Key to the Movistar Plus reset is the creation of two new strategic divisions: Alliances and Content Experience.
Alliances will see Movistar Plus seeking to tie down even more strategic partnerships in carriage deals and production with what a company statement on Friday called, “the most relevant partners in the sector,” citing integration on Movistar Plus’ platform of Disney Plus, Netflix, Dazn and Spanish platforms Atresmedia Ott operator Atresplayer and Mediaset España’s Mitele.

Germany’s Beta Film has picked up world sales on two tales of Spanish power women: Movistar Plus’ originals “Supernormal” and “You Shall Not Lie,” the latter created and directed by “The Red Band Society” helmer Pau Freixas.
Written by Olatz Arroyo and Marta Sánchez, head writers on Atresmedia hit “Down There,” “Supernormal” is directed by Emilio Martínez Lazaro, whose credits take in “Spanish Affair,” the highest grossing Spanish film of all time in Spain. A six-part half-hour, it stars Miren Ibarguren as Patricia, a hyper over-achiever who has it all: a top job at an investment bank, a loving husband and three children, a lovely house in a leafy Madrid suburb. But she wants far more, especial when battling rival Mauro for promotion in the man-dominated high finance world.

Netflix Spain’s most ambitious series release of 2021, “Sky Rojo,” the new original from “Money Heist” creators Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato, will launch in nine days time, premiering worldwide on the platform March 19.
Shifting from the dark, almost noir aesthetics of “Money Heist,” the new series utilizes a brightly colored, grindhouse aesthetic for the new series in a mix of genres its creators have dubbed “Latin Pulp.” The series is also a departure in format for the two, who trade in the hour-long episodes of “Money Heist” for eight punchy, 25-minute episodes, to be copied in the series’ already-confirmed second season.
“Sky Rojo” is headlined by the international trio of Spain’s Verónica Sanchez (“Gordos”), Argentine superstar actor-singer-songwriter Lali Espósito (“That’s Not Cheating”) and Cuban standout Yany Prado (“Tres Milagros”). The three play exotic dancers-turned-prostitutes trapped in the world of sex trafficking, each with a dagger hanging over their head.

Netflix Spain’s most highly-anticipated series release of 2021, “Sky Rojo,” the new original from “Money Heist” creators Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato, will launch worldwide on March 19. To celebrate the premiere announcement, Netflix has shared a new high-octane trailer sure to get viewers’ blood pumping.
Accompanied by a punk rock cover of Rosalia’s global mega-hit “Con Altura,” the trailer demonstrates how Pina and Martínez will shift away from the dark, almost noir aesthetics of “Money Heist” and embrace a drug-fueled, brightly colored, blood-spattered pallet for the new series in a mix of genres the two have dubbed “Latin Pulp.” One thing sure to remain however, is Pina and Martínez’s penchant for humor, evident in the trailer’s scant dialogue, limited to “Meow” and “Good boy.”

For decades, local fiction dominated free-to-air primetime over much of Europe. Many big U.S. water cooler titles like “The Sopranos” and “The Wire” made the running on pay TV.
That old order is now more challenged than ever as Movistar Plus, Spain’s leading pay TV operator, underscored on Tuesday, announcing the top 5 series across its pay TV and SVOD platform in Spain in 2020. All shows are Spanish and Movistar Plus originals.
Topping the list is Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s “Antidisturbios” (Riot Police), which was a big hit with critics and audiences at September’s San Sebastian Festival. The series also proved the most addictive hit on Movistar Plus with almost nine out of 10 viewers finishing the title. It’s now tracking to become the most watched Movistar Plus original series ever.

“Elite” will be coming back for another season of drama in a fancy Spanish high school.
Netflix has picked up the series for season 4 around two months after season 3 launched on the streamer. The cast, including Miguel Bernardeau and Claudia Salas, announced the pickup via a video from their homes in quarantine. Precisely when season 4 will be available is yet to be announced, especially given the current uncertainty of the coronavirus production shutdown.
“I wanted to tell you that we have got the scripts of season 4 and they look so good,” says Bernardeau in the video.
“You better be prepared, because it’s intense,” adds fellow cast member Aron Piper.

San Sebastian — In a game-changing move for Spanish-language production Telefonica, Europe’s third biggest telco, and Atresmedia, the original co-creators of “La Casa de Papel,” are uniting to create a new joint contents production giant.

Madrid is booming as never before in its 125-year film history; arguably, no other European site is currently transforming so quickly into a global production hub.
A 20-minute drive north of the Spanish capital, a large white-concrete hanger has been built beside the Madrid-Burgos motorway, at the entrance to Tres Cantos, a well-heeled satellite village and industrial estate. Welcome to Netflix’s Madrid Production Hub, its first in Europe, which opened April 4.
Five minutes away from that are the offices of Movistar +, the pay TV unit of Telefonica, Europe’s second largest telecom, which has produced and released 20 original series since September 2017.
A quarter of an hour towards the city, in the Fuencarral district, the Mediapro Studio opened its doors last month, announcing it had 34 drama series in phases of production this year.

Never has Spanish TV drama production been so vibrant.
Over the past 12 months, “La Casa de Papel” (“Money Heist”) and “Elite” became global sensations via Netflix, building on the success of previous series that demonstrated a never-seen-before appetite for Spanish originals.
Netflix is opening the doors of its first European production hub in Madrid in early April and preparing five new Spanish Originals; Movistar + aims to produce 15 series a year; HBO and Amazon are increasing production.
Meanwhile, top free-to-air TV broadcasters Mediaset España and Atresmedia are re-inventing themselves as studios, producing content for third-party operators, and taking advantage of their production expertise.
The boom is opening up more ambitious and flexible business production models, such as co-production.
“Many of our projects, from inception, have co-production partners,” says Telefonica’s Movistar + president, Sergio Oslé. “It keeps us international from the get-go and helps us distribute, and also reach some scale and share know-how.

Cannes — A Movistar + Original Series co-produced with and sold by Studiocanal, “Instinto” begins with deep breathing.
It is in fact Marco Mur (Mario Casas), jogging down an empty near-dawn Madrid street. But it could as easily be his having sex. He pleasures himself in the shower, glances at a sketch – maybe his – of a naked woman, then heads to his shrink.
That night he’s off to an “Eyes Wide Shut”-style S & M club, has a threesome with two masked girls. By day, Marco is an entrepreneur and owner of Alva, a high-tech industrial engineering company whose banner first product is Ciclon, a luxury automobile converting wind-power into energy. But even his inventions – there’s a high-speed train in the pipeline – seem, symbolically, a way of escape.
Where did you get the idea for Ciclon? an Arab sheik and potential investor asks at its presentation

Madrid — The third part of “La Casa de Papel” (“Money Heist”), Netflix’s most-watched non-English language show, is entering production and has added new cast. Netflix dropped a first video on Thursday celebrating the occasion.

The class and culture gulf sparks an escalating series of confrontations, culminating in murder.

Cannes — When a band assaulted a smalltime bank in the province of Buenos Aires this year, they wore the Salvador Dali masks featured in the Spanish series “La Casa de Papel” (Money Heist). Netflix head Reed Hastings donned the same mask and overalls to announce in a video a Netflix carriage deal with Telefonica for Spain and Latin America. More than any other series in the world and history, “La Casa de Papel” has symbolized one of the biggest revolutions in the new TV landscape: That foreign-language series, given the platform – here Netflix – can be seen outside their country of origin by tens of millions of viewers, ranking in the same league of audience as high-end U.S. scripted plays.
So how did “La Casa’s” showrunner duo of Alex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato follow it up? By making a show, “El Embarcadero” (“The Pier”), which was not in their wheelhouse,...

In the first scene of “El Embarcadero” (“The Pier”), from “Money Heist” creators Alex Pina and Esther Martinez Lobato, Oscar vidcams his lover, Veronica, naked in bed, getting up, popping on a dress and walking out in dazzling sun onto her patio, the stunning L’Albufera freshwater lagoon beyond.
“The Pier’s” opening captures in a nutshell much of Movistar Plus’ major wager as an original series producer, the biggest of any telecom in Europe, having bowed 11 series from “Velvet Collection” in late September last year. Series is co-produced with Atresmedia Series and Vancouver Media.
It’s a just one-minute scene, filmed, however in 20 shots, with incisive style and the money that only a big-budget series can bring. But Movistar + is willing to put large resources at its creators’ disposal. Recreating c.1580 Seville, serial killer thriller “The Plague’s” six episodes cost €10 million ($11.6 million).

Europe hasn’t gone Hollywood quite yet, but it’s getting there, slowly. The standing of the writer within the hierarchy of drama production in Europe has never been higher, but the Hollywood showrunner model, in its purest sense — in which the writer often has the final say in all creative decisions — is still a relative rarity in Europe.
Eight years ago, British exec producer Stephen Garrett, whose credits include “The Night Manager” and is now working on “The Rook” for Starz, persuaded American showrunner Frank Spotnitz to move to Europe and transplant the Hollywood showrunner model in the shape of BBC thriller series “Hunted.” Spotnitz, who brings “Medici: The Magnificent” to Mipcom, recalls one BBC exec telling him British writers were “categorically not capable of collaborating in a [writers’] room.”
Spotnitz proved that exec wrong, but admits that he has adapted the U.S. model to suit European conditions. The...

Cannes — In one of the biggest deals to go on a major Mipcom title, involving some of Europe’s largest TV players, France’s TF1 has acquired Alex Pina’s Movistar + Original “The Pier,” sold by Beta Film, and produced with Atresmedia Studios.
Numerous additional deals are already in negotiation, Beta Film revealed Saturday.
Also produced by Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato’s Vancouver Media, “The Pier” marks the showrunner duo’s follow-up to “La Casa de Papel” (“Money Heist”), declared by Netflix this April to be its most watched non English-language series ever.
Alvaro Monte, the Professor in “La Casa de Papel” plays the male lead. Capturing a near futuristic Valencia, and the nearby Albufera National Park, an expanse of marshland and rice paddy fields where time seems to move at another race, Pina has commented, the cinematography looks stunning.

International TV drama’s golden age is continuing. As buyers and sellers from around the world congregate in Cannes, Variety speaks to the stars, writers, and distributors of 10 of the scripted series that will be the talk of the Croisette.

Desiree Akhavan wrote the first draft of “The Bisexual” right after premiering her indie film “Appropriate Behaviour” at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, and then spent a year developing it. Having moved to London she took the script out in the U.K. and partnered with Jane Featherstone’s hot indie, Sister Pictures. Just as her movie “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” was greenlit, Channel 4 ordered “The Bisexual” to series.
Akhavan and longtime collaborator Cecilia Frugiuele co-wrote the show. Akhavan also directs, and stars as Leila, a New Yorker in London. Having split with her girlfriend and business partner Sadie (Maxine Peake...

Madrid — Marta Hazas, who has leapt to fame as the absolute lead of “Velvet Collection” – Movistar + first original series which it sold to Netflix – will now star opposite series creator Javier Veiga in “Pequeñas Coincidencias,” a more unusual romantic comedy which marks several new milestones in Spain’s fast evolving high-end production industry.
Produced by Atresmedia Studios, Onza Entertainment and MedioLimón, “Pequeñas Coincidencias” (“Little Coincidences”) is Amazon Prime Video’s first fiction series in Spain. Amazon Prime Video has rights to Spain and Latin America. Otherwise, Onza will sell the world, with Onza’s Gonzalo Sagardia bringing one of the highest-profile of new productions from Spain onto the market at Mipcom.
Onza is in discussions for a U.S. sale on “Pequeñas coincidencias,” Sagardia said.
Spanish free-to-air rights are held by broadcast network Atresmedia, Atresmedia Studios’ parent company.
