Vertical has secured North American rights to comedy “Who Invited Charlie?,” written by Nicholas Schutt and directed by Xavier Manrique (“Chronically Metropolitan”).
The film stars Adam Pally (“Sonic the Hedgehog 2”), Jordana Brewster (Fast & Furious franchise), Reid Scott (“Veep”), Xosha Roquemore, (“The Mindy Project”) Dylan Penn (“Flag Day”), Peter Dager (“Insidious 5”), Peter Grosz (“Late Night with Seth Meyers”), Rhys Coiro (“Paradise City”) and more.
In the film, Phil Schreiber (Scott), a self-involved hedge fund manager, and his wife Rosie (Brewster) take refuge in the Hamptons with their son at the beginning of quarantine. Making an already fraught situation worse is the surprise arrival of Phil’s cocktail-swilling, pot-smoking college roommate Charlie (Pally). Charlie is also the keeper of some of Phil’s darkest secrets. To make matters worse for Phil, his wife and son love Charlie. As Charlie makes himself at home, secrets are revealed that threaten to do more harm than good.

Don’t expect any drive-in screenings, virtual screenings, mask mandates or reduced capacity theaters at the 30th annual Hamptons Intl. Film Festival. This year’s edition will look and feel as it did way back in 2019.
The Long Island-based fest, which runs Oct. 7-16, will screen 69 feature films and 51 shorts that are 54 female-directed and represent 34 countries from around the world.
Also back at Hiff are a bevy of fancy cocktail hours and the fest’s Rowdy Talks series, which will include a conversation with director, screenwriter and producer Chris Columbus.
New this year? The festival will run over 10 days.
“Last year, we were seven days instead of our typical five,” says Hiff artistic director David Nugent. “We did that to see if people would be interested in coming to see films midweek and they were, so we decided to expand.”
One thing that will not feel different this year is...

If you’ve had occasion to regret that your short story was published in The New Yorker to widespread acclaim but then had to face the wrath of friends and loved ones offended by the characters you’ve written based on them, then Xavier Manrique’s debut feature will be your cup of tea. Resembling a Philip Roth novel that the author had the good sense to leave unpublished, Chronically Metropolitan leaves no cliché unturned in its depiction of the social and romantic travails of a group of Upper East Side New Yorkers. They’re the sort of characters who lament how the city...

The best way to watch “Chronically Metropolitan” is to think of it as a parody of a particularly pretentious brand of indie romance. Unfortunately, though, director Xavier Manrique and writer Nicholas Schutt (“Blood & Oil”) play it so solemnly straight for their feature debut that it seems unlikely they’re aiming for satire. Shiloh Fernandez (“Evil Dead”) is Fenton Dillane, a twentysomething author whose single short story in The New Yorker made such a massive impact on the world that, as he complains, he was “forced into exile.” Um. Ok. Also Read: Mary-Louise Parker's Nanny Arrested, Accused of Stealing Thousands...
