The buzzword of modern London is gentrification. Vibrant communities and entire estates that were largely ignored, or deemed too boisterous for the middle-classes, are now seen as opportunities for wealthy real estate developers. East London is now an overpriced trendy hotspot for the bourgeois hipsters and it looks like Brixton is the next upcoming area. In short, it’s a plight that modern working class Londoners constantly face.
A Moving Image sees the stifled artist (filmmaker, poet, and actress) Nina (Tanya Fear) return to her old community in Brixton after a long absence, having spent some time living in the trendy East End of Shoreditch. Part-horrified by the changes that have undergone in her old community, she is soon painted as a symbol of gentrification by those around her.
The film sets out to explore Nina’s struggles with her own complicity in gentrification, noting that her art piece,...

We are quickly approaching WWE Payback, and this week will be the “final sell” before the PPV. Let’s see what WWE can offer to get us to watch their annual May event.
Raw (25th April 2016) Results: Aj Styles pinned Sheamus Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows beat The Uso’s in their Raw debut Sami Zayn beat Rusev Apollo Crews defeated Stardust Natalya beat Emma Baron Corbin and Damien Sandow went to a no-contest Roman Reigns defeated Alberto Del Rio
After some solid shows recently, Raw seems to be in a transitional stage, like something bigger is planned and they are waiting it out. This episode of Raw wasn’t as solid in the ring compared to some recent episodes, and the promos didn’t really make any real explosions to sell Payback, but there is enough going on to make things interesting as we head into the PPV on Sunday.

Another week, another Filmcast. In the T & C’s most action packed episode of the year so far, Liam (Dom’s still on hiatus, but will be back next week – promise) is joined by Dr. Lindsay Hallam (Lecturer in Film at the University of East London), David James (London City Nights) and Matthew Lee (Screen Robot) to discuss an exhaustive and exhausting week at the movies.
Kicking off with a review of Big Hero 6, the gang then segue into a discussion of Julius Avery’s pretty bonkers Son of a Gun – including an exclusive interview with the man himself. Then it’s an all-out run through the rest of the UK’s big releases, with Paul Thomas Anderson’s kind of incomprehensible but kind of great Inherent Vice taking precedent before reviews of Beyond Clueless and a roundtable discussion of the spectacularly silly Kingsman: The Secret Service polish the show off.

Dom may be slipping and moaning his way through the Sundance Film Festival on the far side of the Atlantic, but the mighty Filmcast rolls on unabated. Liam is joined by regular guest Dr. Lindsay Hallam (Lecturer in Film at the University of East London), David James (London City Nights) and Matthew Lee (Screen Robot) to talk yet another busy week at the movies.
On the chopping block for this episode we have Johnny Depp “comedy” Mortdecai, and – much more pleasantly – an Oscar Isaac double bill, with Ex Machina and A Most Violent Year both coming under the gang’s intense scrutiny.
Buckle in folks, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

The gang’s back for 2015 in epic, sprawling fashion. Dom and Liam take to the latest stew of Oscar-bait (and The Hobbit as well) with all the subtlety and taste of a bulldozer, partnered in crime by Dr. Lindsay Hallam, David James and Matthew Lee.
Over the course of a massive hour and a half of cinematic discussion, the group tells you everything you need to know about what’s on at the movies right now – namely, why Birdman‘s really, really good and how American Sniper‘s kinda, sorta evil.
There’s plenty more catch up too, with enamoured discussion of Foxcatcher – and much less than enamoured reviews of Into the Woods and The Woman in Black 2 – as well as reviews of the UK’s three big releases this week: Whiplash, Wild and Testament of Youth.
As a bonus – and provided you can stand all the movie wittering...

In their final show of the year, the gang put their exhausted, film-addled heads together one last time before 2015 comes a knockin’. This week, Liam is joined (via the magic of Skype) by Dom and regular contributors Dr. Lindsay Hallam and David James, as well as the triumphantly returning Matthew Lee.
Tasked with summing up one hell of a year of cinema, the gang run down their personal lists of best and (of course) worst movies of the year – as well as discussing the movies everyone should be excited about in the coming months. From Werner Herzog to Michael Fassbender’s penis, no end of year filmcast is anywhere near as all-encompassing,

In an extra special bumper blockbusting episode of The Tea & Crumpet Filmcast, Liam and Dom are joined once more by Matthew Lee and Dr. Lindsay Hallam to talk this week’s film releases as well as kick off a massive, all-encompassing post-mortem of the summer blockbuster season.
Episode 5 sees Dom take on the lukewarm, unfortunately Jennifer Aniston-led Life of Crime, before the gang at large tackles They Came Together and The Guest. Listeners can also look forward to a sprawling discussion of what’s turned out to be a pretty darn excellent summer of movies, featuring – among many other things – an enamoured, blow-by-blow account of watching Tom Cruise get repeatedly run over by a truck.

Dom and Liam are joined by regular contributor Dr. Lindsay Hallam and newcomer Matthew Lee for a show packed with movie reviews and death knells for Michael Bay’s presence in the UK Box Office.
As well as a look back at some of the numerous highlights (and occasional, but still beloved – at least by Dom – lowlights) of the tragically late Robin Williams’ phenomenal and sprawling career, the gang also put their film critic hats on for reviews of The Congress and Guy Pearce Grimaces: The Movie (Aka: The Rover).

On Thursday morning, the hosts of Fox & Friends posed the question of how tough the "mainstream media" would be on hypothetical 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, and praised Matt Lee, State Department correspondent for the Associated Press — "the definition of mainstream" — for asking a tough question at a State Department briefing, the one that led to State Department Press Secretary Jennifer Psaki being unable to name an accomplishment of Clinton's.

Not your average Greek art house drama, Evil in the Time of Heroes stars the inimitable Billy Zane in a tale of zombies featuring the apocalypse and Greek mythology. (?!) We have promo codes to give away to five lucky readers -- but only for those in the U.S. (No slur intended to our large global audience, which by and large is more handsome, intelligent, and in shape than those of us who live in the States.) As of Tuesday, March 25, the movie is available to watch via various Video On Demand platforms, via Doppelganger Releasing, which is handling the distribution. According to our own Matthew Lee: It's ridiculous, frequently abandons any pretence of making logical sense, sticks two fingers up at audience expectations...

The Bakemonogatari anime series has been a fan favorite ever since its release in Japan a few years ago. In 2010, our correspondent Matthew Lee had the following conclusion in his review: Ultimately, for such an utter fantasy Bakemonogatari feels strikingly human. The self-indulgence is undeniably part of the appeal - the show is hugely entertaining and frequently very funny - but for all it can be wickedly crass it also displays subtlety and a kind of grace lacking from far too many mainstream productions... For any anime fan after something playful or experimental - a portmanteau of witty short stories, beautifully drawn and scripted with genuine heart - Bakemonogatari comes hugely recommended. At the time of Matthew's review, the anime was only available on non-English friendly...

Cairo — Egyptian authorities on Tuesday stepped up a campaign against a popular TV comedian accused of insulting the president, threatening to revoke the license of a private TV station that airs his weekly program and angrily dismissing U.S. criticism of legal proceedings against him.
The satirist, Bassem Youssef, was questioned by state prosecutors earlier this week over accusations that he insulted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi and Islam. On his Jon Stewart-inspired show, Youssef frequently satirizes everything from the president's policies to his mannerisms, as well as hardline Islamic clerics, while highlighting contradictions in their comments.
The questioning of Youssef, along with arrest warrants issued days earlier against five anti-government activists on charges of inciting unrest, have raised warnings by opponents of Morsi of a campaign to intimidate his critics. A new case was opened Tuesday, with prosecutors looking into whether participants in a talk show on another private...

What do veteran punk rocker Iggy Pop, comedic actress Lily Tomlin and fashion designer Anna Sui have in common? They're all connected to Detroit -- and count them among 51 Motor City icons sharing memories of their hometown in a new book.
Fashion photographer Jenny Risher started working on the project that became Heart Soul Detroit: Conversations on the Motor City in 2010. Talking to her friend and model Veronica Webb, who hails from Detroit, Risher started thinking about the many famous and interesting individuals who come from the city.

Funny faces to lost gems, war horses to strange censorship, silent film is a wondrous way to immerse oneself in history
A trip to the British silent film festival is a unique opportunity to wallow in some unfamiliar waters. Four days immersed in silent cinema is time spent in the company of many films that have been forgotten or misremembered, films that have only been seen before by archivists and researchers, and that may never get a public airing again. Some of these films are great, but even those that aren't are fascinating, as cinema history, and as a glimpse of what it was like to live in Britain 100 years ago.
1. "They didn't need dialogue, they had faces"
We're all familiar with Gloria Swanson's famous line in Sunset Boulevard, but she was talking about the blandly beautiful people of Hollywood. The faces of British silent cinema may not be attached to famous names,...

It would seem today that much of the entertainment in books and theaters comes from taking tried-and-true adult works of entertainment and then whitewashing them for the “Ya” audience (apparently that means Young Adult, nowadays. Just remember that next time you see a 40-something mom pouring over her Twilight book with that crazed look in her eye while waiting to pick her children up from school). Twilight took vampires and, well, you see how that turned out. Now, Hunger Games is coming along and taking what Battle Royale did so well and with so much substance and , to be polite, neutering it for the “Ya” audience. Our good friends over at Twitch are mad as hell and they’re not going to take it any more. Matthew Lee runs down a great list of alternatives and why you should give these other books a look.

What's that? It's been 2012 for weeks already? Christ, I'd better get this list finished, hmmm?It was a strange year for film, to be honest, at least from my point of view. I don't think I saw a single mainstream release in the cinema, and most of the recent films I saw were when I was playing catchup for everything I missed in 2010. Still, it was an eventful twelve months - I might not have rated this top ten quite as highly as previous years, but whether through festival screenings or import DVDs it still featured some unforgettable movies.Matthew Lee's Top Ten of 201110: The Mill and the Cross (Lech Majewski, Poland, 2011)It's all too easy for filmmakers to get carried away with exploring...
