Simone Ashley has picked the follow-up to her breakthrough performance as Kathani “Kate” Sharma in season 2 of the hit Netflix series Bridgerton, as Deadline reports that she has the lead role in the psychological thriller This Tempting Madness, which just wrapped production in Los Angeles.
The film marks the feature directorial debut of Jennifer E. Montgomery, who also wrote the screenplay with her husband Andrew M. Davis. Davis has a background in cinematography, including some work on the Sam Raimi-produced horror anthology series 50 States of Fright, so he lensed his wife’s first movie. Inspired by a true story, it sees Ashley taking on the role of a young woman who awakens from a coma grievously injured, memory fractured, her husband arrested. But as she puts together the pieces of her past, she starts to question her own actions — and her perception of reality.

Horror — and horror-adjacent films — have a big "it was all in their head!" problem. To be fair, this isn't a new trend — the 1920 silent classic "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" uses this idea with now-iconic results. But I feel like more and more filmmakers are leaning back on this when they attempt to make a genre pic. I don't mean to say they're all making movies where everything is a hallucination, but it seems more often than not that when a filmmaker wants to give us something scary or disturbing, they simply shoe-horn in a dream and/or fantasy sequence and call it a day. And it really feels lazy.
Mercedes Bryce Morgan's "Fixation" takes this to the extreme, dropping us into a story where nothing can be trusted. Is it all a dream? A nightmare? A very elaborate show? You'll have to watch to find out — but will...

Susie Wallis (Kiersey Clemons) has never met a mystery she couldn’t solve. At least not when it comes to those that populate the crime books her mother (Jammie Patton’s Anne) read to her as a child. It got to the point where she wondered if they should stop reading them altogether, but Susie refused. She didn’t care that she always guessed the culprit. All she cared about was spending time with Mom. So when Anne’s Ms diagnosis advanced enough to take away her speech, Susie took over reading duties to keep the tradition alive. And she even took things one step further by choosing to make her mother’s wish come true: using her knack for literary detective work to do good in the world and become famous.
Unlike her college’s quasi-celebrity Jessie (Alex Wolff), however, you can’t just post something online and become an overnight sensation.

What did Dora (Maddie Hasson) do all those years ago? That’s the question she’s asking herself as she sits straightjacketed in a hospital she doesn’t remember entering. What did her family do to her to earn that ire? That’s the question her doctors (Genesis Rodriguez’s Dr. Melanie and Stephen McHattie’s Dr. Clark) hope to answer for her through an invasively experimental psychiatric evaluation. While the two questions ultimately go together considering her actions were a response to that abuse, separating them should always be undertaken with extreme delicacy. Dora’s overall wellbeing should remain paramount regardless of how effective the therapy could prove by pushing the envelope beyond its limits since clarity can sometimes hurt as much as it can heal. Unless, of course, something else is going on.

Editor’s note: This review was originally published at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival. Vertical releases the film in theaters on Friday, July 28.
The first 25 minutes of “Susie Searches” is so tight, so hilarious and original, beaming with a buoyant teenage energy that could kickoff an entire film series of adventures, that it’s shocking how unyielding, mismanaged and sappy the next hour of the movie becomes. The drop-off is steep, and unfortunate. An expansion by Sophie Kargman of her same-titled 2020 short, “Susie Searches” aims to be about loss and loneliness, and isolation and recognition. But spins its wheels toward mediocrity, instead.
Susie (Kiersey Clemons) is a college student, with braces strapped across her wide smile and an unquenchable love of whodunits. Every night she records a podcast showcasing her sleuthing skills to her moribund audience. Far from the popular girl at school, she languishes in obscurity, while taking care...

Exclusive: Alex Wolff has signed on to star opposite the previously announced Kiersey Clemons in Sophie Kargman’s thriller, Susie Searches.
Kargman’s feature directorial debut is based on her 2020 short of the same name, in which she starred alongside Delon de Metz, Sam Lerner, Gabriel Notarangelo and Alison Rich. The darkly comic thriller follows Susie (Clemons), an awkward college student who seizes the opportunity to bolster her popularity—and her overlooked true-crime podcast—by solving the disappearance of a classmate. But as her investigation proceeds, we realize that the truth and Susie aren’t at all what they seem.
Wolff will play Jesse, the charismatic college kid whose disappearance sparks Susie’s investigation. While Jesse has become a campus celebrity thanks to his positivity-themed social media platform, it turns out his private life is much more complicated than his online persona suggests.
Kargman wrote the script with William Day Frank.

Genre movies based in the home usually take one of a few routes. They can be a haunted house tale, they can be a home invasion movie or they can be something else. Anyone Home? sits nicely in that ‘something else’ category.
It centres on a single mum, Camila (Monique Gabriela Curnen), who is struggling financially and mentally while bringing up her son. She thinks her luck has changed though when she gets a job house-sitting a model home. All she has to do is decorate the house to look good for when would be buyers look round. But it doesn’t take too long for even that to be too much for her.

Horror fans know Rhys Wakefield from his creepy, sinisterly smiling turn as the "Polite Leader" of a group of Purgers in 2013's The Purge, and the actor is now stepping behind the camera to tell a different kind of unsettling story for his feature film directorial debut, Berserk (in which he also co-stars), a story about two screenwriters looking to experience real fear while trying to finish their long-gestating zombie screenplay. With Berserk now on VOD platforms, we recently caught up with Wakefield for our latest Q&A feature to discuss the chilling real-life inspiration for Berserk, filming the movie in 14 days, and working alongside a talented cast that includes Nick Cannon, Nora Arnezeder, and James Roday.
Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, Rhys, and congratulations on your new movie, Berserk. When did you and co-writer William Day Frank first come up with the idea for Berserk?...

Sharon Stone is set to return to her criminal Casino ways with Sunny, a dark comedic thriller in which the Oscar nominee will play the eponymous lead, a drug kingpin, mob mistress and devoted single mother.
Norwegian filmmaker Eva Sorhaug (90 Minutes) is attached to direct Sunny as her English-language debut. The plot, which sees Stone's character going through an adrenaline-fueled 24 hours as she tries to clean up and get out of town before the local mob boss discovers her dysfunctional family’s devastating secret, is based on Sorhaug's original idea. William Day Frank penned the script.

Every year, film executive Franklin Leonard releases his list, called The Black List, of most-liked unproduced screenplays in Hollywood. This year's list was compiled from the suggestions of 290 film executives, each of whom picked up to ten of their favorite scripts. Since the list started in 2004, many screenplays ended up being turned into films. In 2005, two of the top three scripts were "Lars and the Real Girl" which was nominated for Best Original Screenplay Oscar, and "Juno" which actually won the Oscar. See the 2012 Black List below, broken up by how many votes each screenplay received. Some of the projects are already in the works. 65 - Draft Day (Rajiv Joseph, Scott Rothman) On the day of the NFL Draft, Bills General Manager Sonny Weaver has the opportunity to save football in Buffalo when he trades for the number one pick. There is either a couple of football fans or Jerry Maguire/Moneyball with this year’s most liked unproduced screenplay. Close to 300 hundred film executives provided with the Black List creators a top ten of their favorite screenplays of the year and the consensus first overall pick (with 65 votes) comes from the recently featured in Variety (10 Screenwriters to Watch 2012) tandem of Rajiv Joseph & Scott Rothman and their drama which has nothing to do with enlisting in the armed forces. Draft Day – about the day in the life of a fictitious Buffalo Bills Gm appears to currently be in turnaround — which only means I expect to see this greenlight perhaps a little later than sooner – worth noting: top spot almost guarantees that the film will indeed go into production (2006, 2010 and 2011 are the exceptions.) Among the more alluring logline subjects we find on the list, I’d be keen on reading the...

Last week Justin Lin was hired to direct a sci-fi comedy Subdivision, and already he's ready to branch out in the same genre. The Fast Five director has been selected to helm Hibernation, a new sci-fi thriller. THR has the story and adds that the film is based on an original script written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Will Frank. Neither of the writers have any previous credits. At this time there aren't any plot details available, but the trade says that Lin will also produce through his Perfect Storm Entertainment label, as will Film 360. Speaking about the project with the trade, producer Troy Craig Poon said, "The story is fresh, inventive and one we found immensely compelling." Lin is currently in the middle of directing Fast Six, his fourth film in the long-running racing franchise, but even once he is finished he still has a full slate of upcoming projects.

Justin Lin adds another movie to his “to do” list. Ever since “Fast Five” blazed onto the screen and became a massive hit, director Justin Lin has been able to call his shots. He’s been attached to a ton of movies, but he’s still committed to directing two more “Fast and Furious” films, so who knows if he’ll ever actually get to any of those other movies he keeps attaching himself to. Chances are, he’ll just pull a Guillermo del Toro and just end up producing this latest project, a sci-fi movie called “Hibernation”. “Hibernation” is from virgin screenwriters Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Will Frank, and we don’t know any plot details yet. I guess it’s super secret or something. Apparently we’re told the story is “fresh, inventive and … immensely compelling”. So, no muscle cars driving around a city pulling a bank vault? Bummer.

My one experience with Justin Lin's directorial work was the season 1 episode of Community titled 'Modern Warfare' (Yes, the paintball episode) (and yes, a classic for the show). So while I can't really speak to the man's filmography, it's evident that his uber success revitalizing the Fast And Furious Franchise with Fast Five has got the industry singing to the tune of Lin in perfect pitch. Once the fella's done with Fast Six, it's on into the final frontier with the sci-fi thriller Hibernation, which is being scripted by fresh scribes Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Will Frank, and produced by Lin's own Perfect Storm Entertainment and Film 360.No details yet on story, but Lin's producing partner at Perfect Storm, Troy Craig Poon described the project to...

Fast Five director Justin Lin is attached to direct yet another movie called Hibernation, a sci-fi thriller written by newcomers Geneva Robertson and Will Frank.
There aren't many details on the plot surrounding the movie, but producer Troy Craig Poon describes it as a dynamic futuristic thriller, saying that the "story is fresh, inventive and one we found immensely compelling."
Lin is currently working on Fast Six. He's also set to direct a sci-fi comedy called Subdivision, a movie about the L.A. Riots, a film called Lone Wolf and Cub, and an adaptation of the David Henry Hwang Broadway play Chinglish. So the director is packing on the film projects to keep himself busy.

With Justin Lin currently in production on "Fast & Furious 6," the director has been carefully lining up options – lots of options – for what he'll take on once he's done with Vin and co. Since the spring his name has become attached to a smattering of projects including manga adaptation "Lone Wolf & Cub," an adaptation of the stage play "Chinglish," the long-developing inner city drama "L.A. Is it wrong to admit that the Big Brother episode that aired Wednesday night was actually quite boring? Frank is a huge threat in the house, but his loyalty and trustworthiness is just getting the best of him. To completely trust the guy (ahem, Dan) who just threw his own funeral only to come at you with a deal and later deciding to stay on the block just proves how unexpected this game really can be. Frank's sincere confessionals were just way too cringe-worthy.

This writer hit the set of the then-shooting Patrick Cunningham-directed feature Model Home in the La area enclave of Santa Clarita on July 9th and while there chatted with the filmmaker regarding the project as well as with co-producer Will Clevinger (The Devil’s Carnival) and more.
Shooting Day 19 of 20 in the entirely suburban and seemingly white-bread environ, it was hard not to feel that aliens with a hankering for Reese’s Pieces and nuclear families with daughters named "Carol Anne" would both feel entirely comfortable on the set of Model Home. The rented residence in which the production had set up shop and the homes that surrounded it were dotted with manicured lawns and tricycles with colorful handle-bar streamers, abandoned apparently by the pre-pubescent children who had ridden them. Smart perhaps, as what was shooting inside Model Home was fairly disconnected from the tranquility the family-centric locale strove for.

With director Patrick Cunningham's feature directorial debut, Model Home, set to go before cameras next week in Los Angeles, we chatted with co-producer Will Clevinger regarding the indie thriller. Read on!
Co-written by Cunningham and producer William Frank, Model Home is being shepherded by High Windows Films and stars Monique Gabriela Curnen (Contagion) and Kathy Baker (Take Shelter, "Medium"). The narrative explores the practice of "live-in staging," in which recently evicted families are recruited to live in unsold properties. Curnen will play a single mother who begins to entertain dangerous fantasies while "staging" a model home in an otherwise empty development, while Baker portrays a realtor who grows increasingly suspicious and alarmed.
Clevinger and Ben Rabbers (The Devil’s Carnival) co-produce, as does Jarod Einsohn, with executive producer credits going to John Frank and Douglas Britton.

Brian D'Arcy James, better known to "Smash" fans as Julia's faithful husband Frank Houston, gave an emotional performance on Monday night's episode.
In the appropriately titled "Hell On Earth," Frank discovers the truth about Julia's affair with actor Michael Swift. After flying into a rage that leads him to hunt Michael down and throw a punch at him, Frank packs his bag and leaves his wife of 18 years.
The day after the episode aired, James spoke with HuffPost TV about his character, the critical reception of "Smash," and more.
Smash is hitting the Season 1 homestretch. Do you feel like the Broadway community is supporting it?
Absolutely. All my friends that I've worked with over the years are chiming in, and they're giving me their reports. You definitely get the sense that there's this excitement from the community that their story's being told on television.
