Derek Hough continues his reign as one of the lords of the dance, scoring three nominations for the just-unveiled World Choreography Awards (sister Julianne Hough also makes a showing this year).
His nominations include ABC’s “Step Into…the Movies” special as well as their long-running “Dancing with the Stars,” and also Hough’s work on the music video for Michael Bublé’s “Higher.” However, married choreographers Phillip and Makenzie Chbeeb, also scored three noms each, including one with Hough for the “Higher” video, as well as for the “Zed Ramadan” TV commercial and ABC’s recent “Beauty and The Beast” anniversary special.
Jamal Sims, nominated for three Emmys this year in the choreography categories for his various projects—including Paramount+’s “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies“—garnered two nods, including his work on Netflix’s “13 the Musical” and the live “Encanto at the Hollywood Bowl.”

That is certainly a bold claim, but the opening number from Tuesday’s Top 20 performance show (full recap here) was such a treat. I still can’t type the moniker “Nappytabs” (or walk by Tabitha and Napoleon’s urban dancewear store in North Hollywood) without feeling weird about it, but anyway, the duo choreographed a superbly shot (in seemingly one take! …but not) behind-the-scenes routine, set to the perfect snazzy song — “Puttin’ on the Ritz” by Herb Alpert feat. Lani Hall. The judges, Sytycd All-Stars, and some choreographers make cameos.

Supercringe! Nigel Lythgoe’s general buffoonery can make for some pretty awkward critiques on Sytycd, but tonight he outdid himself while raving about Dorian “BluPrint” Hector’s prowess in an Afro Jazz routine. “People say, ‘This is your ethnicity, your heritage.’ But it isn’t! You didn’t grow up in a jungle!” the old white man exclaimed to the young black dancer. Say what?! At least BluPrint (pictured, center) put on a brave grin following the comment. As you can see, host Cat Deeley took a bit longer for her “Wtf, man?” face to catch up to the contestant’s.

In the first time in Sytycd history, two ballet dancers take top honors!
In the closest race ever to be America’s favorite dancers, we were in such suspense to find out the answer. I had no idea how America was going to vote, especially since Tiffany and Cyrus were never in danger the entire season. So it took me by surprise who came out on top.

This is it! After weeks of auditions and Las Vegas and live shows, we've finally reached the performance finale! Only Eliana, Tiffany, Chehon and Cyrus remain - but still, we need to pick just one guy and one girl as our winner next week. Obviously you need a great judge for the finale, so joining Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy this time is Rob Marshall! But each contestant is going to be dancing five times in this episode, so we'd better get things going... Cyrus & Eliana - Paso Doble Cyrus and Eliana are back together (hurrah!) and they're working with choreographer Jason Gilkison on their paso doble. But Jason has a twist to the dance - he's switching up the gender roles so that Eliana will be the matador and Cyrus the cape. "I feel more like a mop," Eliana quips, as Cyrus swishes her across the floor. But their...

Hello everybody and yes we’re back and better than ever! Each year I have no idea what will be ahead. Will this season’s dancers possibly be as good as last season’s? I believe they are. I’m always filled with so much excitement as my car picks me for the first audition city and the auditions this year did not let me down.

On tonight's So You Think You Can Dance top 20 show, the ridiculous opening number—a Mad Men-esque office gender standoff set to Kerry Muzzey's "Architect of the Mind" and created by Christopher Scott—did just what it should: showcase the brilliance of these twenty talented kids and how high the stakes will be as we whittle them down to one guy and one girl (two each will head home next week), our Power Rankings tell you the leaders to look out for, as well as who's on the bubble:
1) Audrey & Matthew get a Travis Wall contemporary number, so that's essentially just brought them half a season of life of this show, I'd like to hope. The Righteous Brothers' "Unchained Melody" sets a great tone for a Titanic-themed piece, and where Travis' choreography usually requires completely unrestrained chemistry and technique, they both really nailed it. Every lift, every catch,...

There’s a “Closed” sign hanging at the ticket booth for the So You Think You Can Dance Hot Tamale Express, but not because the Season 9 Top 20 isn’t packed with talent. Quite the contrary, I’d say that based on Top 20 Performance Night, there are already a good dozen dancers who’ve scored reservations on the exclusive locomotive (with its crazed conductor Mary Murphy).
The depth of the field — and the lack of unbeatable early front-runners so early in the competition — is good news for fans of the show. The resulting sense of suspense — and the reality that no...

Watching So You Think You Can Dance‘s Season 9 Top 20 announcement episode — its first this year with live, choreographed dances — I was struck by the fact that the show really is like an old friend. No matter how long it’s been away, it only takes a minute or two for me to fall back in step with its warm and familiar cadences.
There was Cat Deeley, playfully announcing that just minutes into the telecast, she was already covered in the sweat of nearby dancers. (Not nearly as gross as it sounds.) There was Mary Murphy, hooting like a tipsy...

While Nigel Lythgoe announces that this year's competition on So You Think You Can Dance--now reduced to just one night a week--will have two winners (one male, one female), he mysteriously left out how those winners will be chosen. I'm excited for the season to kick off, but I'm a bit apprehensive when it comes to the new voting system. I just can't help but feel like the ninth season--which could be the last if ratings don't hold--might screw its loyal fans over.
We get through our first bunch of dancers, which will obviously be a contemporary bunch because Duh. Alexa, who has struggled through this year's auditions, finally makes it in after getting cut at the last minute in season 8, and she's absolutely ecstatic about it. As "So You Think You Can Dance's" careers through Season 9, we're moving closer to the top 20 and the show's perennial Las Vegas week took us one (dance) step closer. But not without some tears. Okay, lots of tears.
The biggest outburst came from Alexa Anderson, who burst into water works after a pretty harsh critique from choreographer Tyce Diorio. Honestly, anyone would've cried after that smackdown.
"I'm beyond your beauty," said Diorio criticizing Alexa's noted inability to emote. "The lights are on, but no one is home."
Judge Mary Murphy was a bit more gracious, encouraging Alexa to let go and "take a risk."
"I'm wracking my brain and pushing myself," says a distraught Alexa who is only 19, though a "Sytycd" vet having made it to Vegas in Season 8. "I know I can get there I know that I can be on this show and I know that I can do it.

So You Think You Can Dance delivered surprising twists aplenty on Wednesday night. Nine of the 10 remaining dancers scored rave reviews from the judges. One choreographer got spanked rather harshly by this week’s guest panelist. And an All-Star dancer bled (rather sexily) for his art. But nothing will be more shocking than seeing one of Season 8′s fabulous female contestants head home on this week’s results show. We're not sure what it says about "So You Think You Can Dance" that the first celebrity judge of the season was Megan Mullally -- star of "Childrens Hospital," erstwhile Tammy no. 2 on NBC's "Parks & Recreation" and "Will & Grace" alumna. She's not really known for her dancing. But, hey, we were pretty jazzed, what with being big fans and all. We hoped to catch a glimpse of real-life husband Nick Offerman (Ron Effing Swanson) in the audience, but no such luck -- probably home whittling a canoe.
But we digress -- we're here to talk about dance, and here we go.

Salt Lake City turned out to be everything we'd imagined: kind of vanilla with a touch of crazy. But that didn't stop Nigel Lythgoe from taking the "So You Think You Can Dance" train right into the heart of Utah to give the state's auditioners some big love.
Along for the ride on the judge train (kind of like a Tamale train, but judgier) were stalwart Mary Murphy and -- for the first time ever -- Pussycat Doll choreographer/mastermind Robin Anton.
A Salt Lake standout: Tadd Gadduang, a mohawked street dancer who Mary lauded as "fantabulous," had some serious athleticism to back up his moves. Not to mention style -- instead of overdosing on tricks, Tadd kept his moves precise and gave off a mime-like vibe. We can't wait until he gets to Vegas to see him stretch into some other styles.

Amazing auditioners get tickets for the next round in Vegas; those who “fail to impress” (there’s a euphemism for you) get sent home, and...

(S07E01) 'So You Think You Can Dance' returns claiming that the show will get tougher. If the first auditions were a harbinger of what is to come, the talent looks about the same to me. The two hour premiere featured the New York City and Miami auditions, but less than an hour was used for Miami showing that the talent that showed up for Miami must not have been too strong.
While Mia Michaels and Adam Shankman joined Nigel in NYC, Sonya Tayeh and Jason Gilkison helped out in Miami. The choreography round had choreography provided by Courtney from season four and Jason from season five. It felt like there were less bad performances in the premiere, but Mike Perlman and Jamie Grecko brought the laughter to the show.

While "So You Think You Can Dance" is already capturing millions of viewers with the introduction of its winning formula in the UK, it's also already time for auditions to be underway for its seventh season in the Us. Creator/Director/Judge Nigel Lythgoe jets back and forth between the continents for the now international dance sensation, where the press has already resurrected his "Nasty Nigel" label.
"It started back on 'Popstars' in 2000," Lythgoe said. "It was the first, I guess, nasty judging seen anywhere and so I got this lovely label of 'Nasty Nigel' thanks to the alliteration."
But for Miami's auditions, the first stop for season 7's search for America's best dancers, Lythgoe takes his seat at the judges table once again next to contemporary choreographer Sonya Tayeh and "Burn the Floor" director Jason Gilkison. Lythgoe is certainly more brutally honest than "nasty," likening the competition...

[To better cover the technical talents of season 6, we've brought on Dr. Goddess, a fan columnist with decades of dance experience. She will share her dance-pertise in a weekly column recapping and reviewing So You Think You Can Dance with an eye on technique.]
"Now, this is a show about improvement and, I mean, how do you improve, like, what do you become? It's gonna be freakish." -- Adam Shankman
Indeed, So You Think You Can Dance was freakish. Channing Cooke and Phillip Attmore kicked things off---literally---with Jason Gilkison's jive routine and the perfect costuming to showcase Channing's perfect legs. Both she and Phillip started and ended well but it took them a while to fully engage the performance. The energy did dip mid-performance and, yes, the final pull-through and flip was so awkward, I thought Phillip might be going home.

It was a dancer’s dream and a choreographer’s delight when So You Think You Can Dance decided to try something a little different for their first fall episode after auditions. Rather than jump right into competition, the judges, the audience and the choreographers had a chance to meet the top 20 and see them dance in their own styles without worry of elimination. Judges Nigel, Mary and Adam Shankman (now a permanent fixture) were on hand more to encourage than to critique on the new set, now on the famed American Idol stage. (There was even a designated spot for Paula Abdul if she decides to drop by!) The first of seven routines showcasing the top 20 in their respective styles started with a Wade and Amanda Robson creation set in a speakeasy world with rival gangs battle-dancing in a vivid costume extravaganza. Tabitha and Napoleon Dumo then got the...
