To watch Champs, a new documentary about the world of boxing and three of its most prolific athletes, is to watch two very different kinds of films duke it out. The first is one chronicling the rags-to-riches stories of how Evander Holyfield, Bernard Hopkins and Mike Tyson battled a life of poverty and the continual threat of jail time to reinvent themselves as world champion boxers. However, despite intimate interviews with the athletes and inspiring stories of adversity, Champs also gives academics and sports journalists the time to analyze and criticize much of the sport, from crippling injuries to a lack of health and safety standards.

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has released its annual list of local Emmy nominations. NBCUniversal’s NBC4 is tops with 18 noms, followed by Univision’s Spanish-language outlet Kmex with 15. CW-affiliated KTLA5 is next with 13; ABC’s ABC7 and indie for PBS channel Kcet landed 12 each. Univision’s multiplatform education initiative Educate, Es El Momento (Educate Yourself, The Moment is Now) will receive the 2013 Governors Award. Weeks after leaving her radio show at Kpcc, Madeleine Brand was named on Tuesday a contributor to Kcet's "SoCal Connected." The show, which previously aired on a weekly cycle, will begin a daily broadcast schedule on the public television station at 7 and 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 29.
