“Little Nicolas,” the nostalgic, hand-drawn ode to the popular French children’s book series and its creators — René Goscinny (“Asterix”) and the late illustrator Jean-Jacques Sempé — won the Grand Prize at the fifth annual Animation Is Film Festival (Aif), held last weekend at the Tcl Chinese 6 Theaters in Hollywood. This should help the France-Luxembourg release from directors Amandine Fredon and Benjamin Massoubre secure U.S. distribution.
“My Father’s Dragon” (Cartoon Saloon/Netflix), the 2D adaptation of Ruth Stiles Gannett’s classic children’s book, from Oscar-nominated director Nora Twomey (“The Breadwinner”), took home the Special Jury prize. This provides some heat as Cartoon Saloon chases its fifth Best Animated Feature Oscar nomination.

Is a National Animation Museum on the horizon?
On Tuesday, state senator Anthony Portantino (D – La Cañada Flintridge) announced that he helped secure 2.5 million in the 2022-23 California state budget to kickstart an effort to develop a virtual and physical animation museum.
There’s still a long way to go before the project can become a reality. More fundraising will follow, along with outreach to studios and groups including the International Animated Film Society (Asifa-Hollywood), the non-profit that produces the Annie Awards for animation — which separately had been developing its own plans for a museum to celebrate its art form.
One initial idea is to potentially find a space in the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena area, which has long been a center for animation. Burbank has been the home of Walt Disney Animation Studios since 1940, Dreamworks Animation has called Glendale its home since its launch in...

For the second year in a row, the 49th Annie Awards will be virtual after Asifa-Hollywood, the organization behind the event, decided to pivot amid the omicron-driven surge in Covid-19 cases.
The show was originally going to be an in-person affair Feb. 26 at Royce Hall on the campus of UCLA. Now it will be streamed on the Annie Awards website, on Saturday, March 12, beginning at 7 p.m. Pt.
According to Asifa-Hollywood executive director Frank Gladstone, the board made the decision to pivot in mid-January. Members considered three options. “One was to just stay the course and do the live show,” Gladstone says. Option two was to go virtual. “And the third option was doing a live show but postponing it even further,” he says. “At the end of the day, going virtual was what the board decided to do.”

The Annie Awards will be virtual for a second consecutive year. The board of Asifa-Hollywood said today that the live ceremony for its 49th annual trophy show has been canceled and replaced by the livestreamed virtual format.
The show also is moving from its announced February 26 date to March 12 at 7 p.m. Pt. The board said the changes are due primarily to the growing concern over the rapid spread of the Omicron variant of Covid.
“When we announced that the Annies would be in-person this year on February 26, the Omicron variant was not even on the horizon,” said Frank Gladstone, Asifa’s executive director. “But now it is here and so highly infectious that, after much debate and discussion, Asifa’s board of directors has decided, in an abundance of caution, to once again move to a virtual ceremony. Netflix’s investment in animation has paid off in a big way, as the streamer picked up a whopping 52 nominations at the 49th Annie Awards. Following behind is Disney, which received 29 bids between its film and TV projects.
Taking place on Feb. 26, 2022 at UCLA’s Royce Hall and presented by the Los Angeles branch of the International Animated Film Association, the Annie Awards recognize excellence in cinema and television.
Netflix picked up nine nominations for “Arcane,” its series based on Riot Games’ online multiplayer game “League of Legends.” The hit film from Sony Pictures Animation “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” earned eight nods, and Netflix’s own limited series “Maya and the Three,” directed by Jorge Gutierrez, has seven.
While Disney lagged behind Netflix for total nominations, the studio’s “Raya and the Last Dragon” led all content with 10 nominations, followed by its studio sibling “Encanto,” which picked up nine.

The 48th Annie Awards, like almost every other major entertainment event in the last year, is going virtual on April 16, and the show will have a few surprises in store for those tuning in to the free program.
“We’ve got some animation. We’ve done special graphics for the show. And because we won’t have people walking to and from the stage, which always takes some time, the show will probably be a little more streamlined,” Frank Gladstone, executive director of Asifa-Hollywood and the event’s producer, explains.
Among the presenters slated for the Annie Awards are actors Josh Gad, Philippa Soo (who voices the goddess Chang’e in “Over the Moon”) and Eva Whittaker (the voice of Mebh Óg MacTíre in animated feature — independent nominee “Wolfwalkers”). Other presenters include directors Sergio Pablos (“Klaus”) and Jill Culton (“Abominable”), “Wolfwalkers” producer Nora Twomey, composer Michael Giacchino and the cast of web series “Critical Role.

The Annies, started by animation organization Asifa-Hollywood nearly 50 years ago as a dinner to honor toon veterans Max and Dave Fleischer, has today morphed into a major awards season event, honoring achievements in 32 categories as well as a number of juried kudos.
“We keep growing every year,” says Frank Gladstone, executive director of Asifa-Hollywood. This year it will be held on Jan. 25 at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus, its home for the past several years.
“Every year, for the last few years, we’ve had between 10% and 20% growth. Not only in how much it costs, because that’s true too, but in the amount of submissions. This year, we had almost 2,000 submissions. That’s a lot of submissions!”
More entries, more award categories, more impact, more cachet.

The Annie Awards, recognizing a need to celebrate all of the animated content being made these days in virtual reality, has created a category this year to honor that work. The Annies will be handed out Feb. 2 at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus.
Until now, Vr content had to create a 2D version and, in some cases, play in theaters, in order to become eligible for awards recognition, and that can be a time-consuming and costly process. So Asifa-Hollywood, the organization behind the Annies, set up a Vr lab at the Burbank HQ so judges could view the content as it was meant to be seen.
“A flat version of Vr is one thing,” says Asifa-Hollywood exec director Frank Gladstone. “Vr itself is something different.” Making sure the judges saw the content as it was meant to be seen was paramount. “It should be seen the way it was produced.

Memorabilia from the private collection of late voice actress June Foray will be up for auction beginning at 1 p.m. at Heritage Auctions.
Foray is best known as the voice of Rocky the Flying Squirrel in the various “Rocky and Bullwinkle” series, Cindy Lou Who in “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” and Granny in the “Sylvester & Tweety” cartoons. But she voiced hundreds of other roles beyond those, working late into her life. She died on July 26, 2017, just a few weeks shy of her 100th birthday.
In addition to her prolific voice acting career, Foray was also a key figure in the animation industry as a whole.

Frank Gladstone's animated kids' movie The Hero of Color City is a perfectly pleasant pastiche of other movies, the most obvious antecedent being the Toy Story films. Every night after a young boy goes to sleep, his generic, definitely-not-Crayola crayons come to life and pass through a vortex to their world of Color City. After greedy, unfinished sketch King Scrawl follows her into Color City, self-consciously timid crayon Yellow (Christina Ricci) must overcome her deep fears of everything and go on a journey to stop the King from hoarding all the color for himself, lest he siphon the crayons of their hues (and, eventually, their existence). As movies aimed at pre-schoolers and kindergarteners go, The Hero of Color City largely respects its audien...

Owen Wilson and Jessica Capshaw have joined the cast of The Hero of Color City, which Moviehouse is selling in Cannes.
Christina Ricci, Rosie Perez, Wayne Brady and Craig Ferguson were previously announced on the animation about crayons that come to life in a child’s bedroom at night.
Magnolia Pictures will be releasing the film day-and-dats theatrically and across digital platforms on October 3.
Frank Gladstone directs and the producers are John D Eraklis and Max Howard.

Comedian Patton Oswalt will host the 39th annual Annie Awards on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, at UCLA's Royce Hall, according to THR.
Patton's comedic talent, audacious humor and love for animation will bring great energy and visibility, not to mention fun to this year's ceremony,'' says Asifa-Hollywood President Frank Gladstone. We totally agree. In fact, we think Oswalt should host everything all day long.
Oswalt, who did the voice for Pixar's amazing "Ratatouille" says "The Annies are where the real weirdos hang, and it's a visual feast just to have a drink with them. I can't wait." We can't either, Patton.
This year's nominees include "Kung Fu Panda 2" which leads the pack with 12 nominations, "Cars 2" and "Puss In Boots." "Rango" and "Winnie the Pooh" are also nominated.

Awards season is in full swing, and for animation fans that means only three titles get nominated at the Academy Awards. That means there is a significant chance that your favorite animated movie would most likely be left out in the cold. For one reason is because of the number of nominations, the other is because one of those nominations generally goes to an foreign title. So for those that cannot get the nomination call, animated titles get recognized in their own special way called the Annie Awards. This next year would be the 39th time the awards are held and today Indiewire has a look at the best animated movies had to offer.
“We are really excited about the expanded list of nominations this year…in all 28 categories,” commented Frank Gladstone, president, Asifa-Hollywood in a statement. “All of the major animation studios are represented, as are some of the...

Change could be coming to the Annie Awards with the election of Frank Gladstone as the head of the organization that runs these kudos honoring the best in animation. The recent 38th annual ceremony was mired in controversy after Pixar and Disney withdrew from formal consideration last August citing concerns with the voting process. DreamWork's "How to Train Your Dragon" -- which led with 15 nominations -- was the big winner, taking 10 races, including best picture. It replicated the feat two years ago of another DreamWorks film, "Kung Fu Panda," which won the same 10 awards while Pixar's eventual Oscar champ "Wall-e" was shut out. This year, Pixar's "Toy Story 3" and Disney's "Tangled" received no recognition from these awards. Between them, these two high-profile pictures had managed only five write-in nominations, all of which they lost. Beyond their best picture bids, "Toy Story 3" was in th...
