The full lineup for this year’s Unnamed Footage Festival was announced by Dread Central today, revealing that a new version of Bloody Disgusting, Cineverse, Screambox and director Robbie Banfitch’s found footage horror movie The Outwaters will debut at the fest!
It’s titled The Outwaters: Detective Audio Version, and a sneak peek is coming to Unnamed Footage Festival in March. The official press release previews, “Often in found footage horror, the images we view are presented as evidence in a case, but the greater narrative stops there. Uff is bringing Robbie Banfitch’s cosmic horror masterpiece back to the festival for a badge-holder-only sneak peek of a new iteration of The Outwaters that transforms it into an entirely different viewing experience. Now the visuals are paired with the observations of two investigators, Detective Stacey and Detective Nolan, reviewing the footage, trying to uncover what really happened and how...

Found footage films are usually at their best when they keep the authenticity high and the complexity low, with the best of the best found footage movies favoring chilling simplicity above all else. The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity are two of the all-time greats for a reason, both stripped down, low-budget found footage efforts that still terrify to this day.
Filmmaker Dutch Marich has been tapping into those vibes with his own bone chilling found footage franchise, which kicked off with Horror in the High Desert in 2021 and now continues this year with sequel Horror in the High Desert 2: Minerva. The unsettling found footage franchise delves into mysterious disappearances in the Nevada wilderness.
These deeply effective found footage movies bring maximum terror with their minimal approaches to the sub-genre, and they’re Both now streaming on Screambox today!

The end of the year always brings about reflection, so it felt appropriate to recall the moments that helped define 2023 in horror. As in, the unforgettable moments that shaped the conversation whether through watercooler discussions or going viral on social media. Consider this a fun trip down memory lane before 2024 ushers in its own new wave of horrors.
These ten memorable horror moments stood out, and catapulted their respective movies, video games, or TV series into the public conversation.
M3GAN – A Viral Killer Doll
Technically, one of the buzziest horror moments of the year began in 2022. From the very first look at the dancing queen in the trailer that debuted in October 2022, audiences were smitten. So much so that M3GAN went viral, and Blumhouse leaned into it in a way that ensured this early January release was a not-so-sleeper hit. We’d expect nothing less from the mind...

This is no mirage. This is really happening.
The summer sale is in full swing over at Vinegar Syndrome, where you can also preorder Screambox found footage freakout The Outwaters on Blu-ray, loaded with special features.
Fans of writer/director Robbie Banfitch‘s feature will want to run to grab a copy; the limited edition slipcover is already sold out!
Reminiscent of early found footage like The Blair Witch Project with an injection of Event Horizon and Gaspar Noé’s hellish Into the Void, The Outwaters, now streaming on Screambox, has been described by many as what it must be like to experience death.
The Outwaters follows a foursome who set out to make a music video in the middle of the desert, and while their trip starts out uneventful, their peace is eventually disrupted by unexplained sounds, vibrations, and unnatural animal behavior.

Busy week sees 19 releases, including Ben Affleck’s ‘Air’, and ‘The Pope’s Exorcist’.
Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie will smash the record for widest UK-Ireland opening by an animated film this weekend, starting its run in 721 sites.
That is 31 sites above the 690-site opening for the previous record holder, Disney’s Toy Story 4 from 2019.
Adapted from the best-selling Nintendo game series, The Super Mario Bros. Movie tells the story of two Italian-American siblings trying to get their plumbing business off the ground, who are accidentally drawn into a battle to save a magical land called the Mushroom Kingdom.

For all its purported mystery and experimentation, Robbie Banfitch’s tale of four unlucky friends out in the wilds comes off as decadent
We’ve reached the late baroque stage for found-footage horror movies; the signature moves of the genre have become so familiar that directors are reaching for new extremes. Jump scares are even more abrupt, and the gore, often just glimpsed for microseconds, is so horrible it verges on ludicrous. The cinematography is so verité-shaky, the storytelling so eerily elliptical, that you get a film like this – entirely abstract in its last act. Be warned: the end of The Outwaters is mostly just darkness pierced by a wee spot of light from a handheld camera illuminating blood-drenched crime scenes and desert floor all smeared together. It lurches towards a climactic act of self-harm so horrible it’s up there with art history’s worst sufferings of saints.

Reminiscent of early found footage like The Blair Witch Project with an injection of Event Horizon and Gaspar Noé’s hellish Into the Void, The Outwaters, now streaming on Screambox, has been described by many as what it must be like to experience death.
Love it or hate it, we here at Bloody Disgusting are extremely proud of Robbie Banfitch‘s film. Ambiguous, dangerous, and brutally unapologetic, The Outwaters is different in a sea of the same. We hope that horror fans turned off the lights, jacked up the volume, and allowed themselves to sink into the experience that’s nothing short of nerve-shredding.

The first trailer for a horror film that’s setting off people’s Apple Watch heart rate alerts has dropped.
While the new release arrived in the US in February, UK fans have been made to wait a little bit longer.
Titled The Outwaters, the film is a found-footage horror following a group of friends who travel to the Mojave Desert to make a music video.
What starts out as a straightforward film evolves into a “mind-bending trip through terror”, with actor-director Robbie Banfitch unleashing a “hellish” sensory experience on viewers, in the form of “unexplained sounds and vibrations”.
The synopsis explains: “Mysterious sounds haunt them, and when a menacing force descends, their horrifying journey into soul-shattering darkness begins.”
Following its US premiere, The Outwaters was branded a “deranged nightmare” by one Twitter user, who claimed it set off his Apple Watch’s “high heart rate” alert twice.

The wilderness is a breeding ground for unimaginable horrors. With expanses of trees, the darkness feels as though it’s closing in on you. Tree limbs creak, the silver moon hangs low overhead, and the campfire crackles its golden orbs into the sky. But around you, there lurks a malevolent force, human or otherwise, plotting your demise. In both Robbie Banfitch’s The Outwaters and Dutch Marich’s Horror in the High Desert, terrors you’ve never known jump out of the screen.
There’s a moment in The Outwaters when an unidentified man stands on the horizon, wielding an ax. The skyline blankets the Mojave Desert like scattered diamonds. The man’s presence looms and induces waves of chill bumps. And blood-soaked horror is swift. His feet crack over the earth, and in one full motion, he plants an ax right into Robbie’s skull. “My head is raining,...

One of the more effective found footage movies in recent years, Horror in the High Desert is now streaming on Tubi, and we’ve learned this week that a sequel is on the way.
Director Dutch Marich is back with Horror in the High Desert 2: Minerva this year, the official sequel to the 2021 found footage film, and the trailer has been unleashed.
Update – 3/8/23 – Horror in the High Desert 2 is now available on VOD!
Horror in the High Desert 2: Minerva will play at the upcoming Unnamed Footage Festival, where you’ll also be able to see Robbie Banfitch’s (The Outwaters) new movie Tinsman Road.
“In 2018 a string of tragedies unfolded in the high desert of North Eastern Nevada. A woman was found dead and another would vanish along the same stretch of remote highway. Could these events be linked to the 2017 disappearance of outdoorsman Gary Hinge?”

A New York Times Critic’s Pick, found footage cosmic horror hit The Outwaters will stream exclusively on Screambox and release on digital platforms this Friday, 17th February, via Cinedigm and Bloody Disgusting. During its theatrical run, the film set off Apple Watch heart monitors, made viewers uncomfortably nauseous, and caused in-theater anxiety. Now fans can experience what Jezebel calls a “mind-twisting, narrative-pulverizing vision of horror” from the comfort of home. Critics are responding to The Outwaters, which is currently 71% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Rolling Stone hailed it as “obscenely effective,” while JoBlo said, “The film’s final 10 minutes are amongst the most gruesome and uncomfortable moments in any horror film I have ever seen.” Memory cards unearthed in a remote stretch of the Mojave Desert tell the story of four travelers who vanished during a sun-drenched camping trip. One night, everything changes when the foursome is sent on a...

Reminiscent of early found footage like The Blair Witch Project with an injection of Event Horizon and Gaspar Noé’s hellish Into the Void, The Outwaters, which opened in theaters this past weekend, has been described by many as what it must be like to experience death.
Critics loved it, audiences were divided, and now Screambox subscribers will be able to judge for themselves now that The Outwaters has arrived on the Bloody Disgusting-powered streaming platform as well as all VOD platforms!
Love it or hate it, we here at Bloody Disgusting are extremely proud of Robbie Banfitch‘s film, which we like to call anti-cinema. Ambiguous, dangerous, and brutally unapologetic, The Outwaters is different in a sea of the same. We hope that you’ll turn off the lights, jack up the volume, and allow yourself to sink into the experience that’s nothing short of nerve-shredding.

At first glance, Robbie Banfitch's found footage nightmare, "The Outwaters," may read as experimental. It certainly has to a lot of viewers, and the Letterboxd review section is peppered with the word. But Banfitch, who not only wrote and directed the movie but also starred in it, never viewed the film this way.
"I never thought of 'The Outwaters' as experimental as I was making it," the multi-hyphenate told "Skinamarink" writer-director Kyle Edward Ball in a recent New York Times interview. "The logic of the story — what would be filmed or not in the situation — makes it experimental in parts. But that was never the plan."
The movie's gory descent into hell — which follows a group of friends who set out to film a music video in a secluded region of the Mojave Desert — is a wild ride, the kind of film that needs to be seen to be believed.

Fresh off the heels of Kyle Edward Ball's haunting analog horror film, "Skinamarink," horror fans have been served up a delectable bit of dread in the form of Robbie Banfitch's "The Outwaters." /Film's own Lex Brisuco described the film in her review as, "a movie that rightfully feels like our generation's 'Blair Witch Project' but also manages to be unique, specific, and wholly singular." It's a bold statement indeed, but one that is not without merit. "The Outwaters" is compelling, creepy, and loaded with a fresh take on cosmic horror that at times feels downright dangerous. It's the type of found footage movie you feel like you could watch for hours, keeping you glued to the screen with the same sense of morbid curiosity often only found by pre-teens exploring unregulated internet forums at the turn of the millennium.

Cinedigm, Bloody Disgusting, and Screambox’s found footage nightmare The Outwaters opened in theaters this past weekend and one thing is for certain… it’s divisive.
Robbie Banfitch‘s film follows a foursome who set out to make a music video in the middle of the desert, and while their trip starts out uneventful, their peace is eventually disrupted by unexplained sounds, vibrations, and unnatural animal behavior.
What happens next is a mind-bending trip through terror that is nothing short of disorienting and absolutely frightening.
Critics have been raving (it’s “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes), but general audiences have been split on the chaotic nature of the film. For those who have yet to see it, The Outwaters is maybe the most frantic and abstract horror film ever made. I took my nieces, and while one didn’t like the Blair Witch vibe, the other was shaken right down to her core,...

Microbudget independent horror is certainly having a moment. Kyle Edward Ball’s experimental haunted house flick Skinamarink has grossed $2 million to date on a $15,000 budget, and 17-year-old YouTuber Kane Parsons will turn his lo-fi viral series The Backrooms into a feature film for A24. The Outwaters, Robbie Banfitch’s compellingly creepy new horror flick, takes the found-footage genre and the lost-in-the-desert nightmare, smashes them together, and spins them off their axis. Watching it, I kept thinking of that Matt Damon and Casey Affleck movie Gerry, from 2002, about two men who go off-trail during a desert hike, lose their way, and suffer from delirium until one of them is killed by the other. The Outwaters sometimes feels like a nightmare inverse of that movie, in which the people involved, camping out in the Mojave Desert to film a music video,...

Now in limited theaters across the country is The Outwaters, our latest genre offering that calls back to The Blair Witch Project by the way of Event Horizon.
Our entire team fell in love with Robbie Banfitch‘s film that screened at last year’s Panic Fest, but it’s super validating to see all the wonderful reviews that have been hitting over the past few weeks.
The New York Times raved, celebrating the film’s “stunning sound design, creative mood-setting and a fearless finale,” while Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com adds: “This film takes no prisoners, offers no explanations, and forces you to go on its twisted journey that blends found footage structure with something that H.P.
Lovecraft might have dreamed up. It’s a ride.”

We’re less than a quarter into 2023 and independent horror appears to be having a moment. Technically it started several months ago when Kyle Edward Ball’s “liminal horror” Skinamarink gained word-of-mouth buzz after leaking online, but its official release in January spawned an inexplicable indie hit. A slow, dread-inducing experimental work made on a micro-budget, Skinamarink received comparisons to avant-garde filmmakers like the late Michael Snow and somehow earned millions in a semi-wide release. One month later we have Robbie Banfitch’s The Outwaters, a found-footage horror movie with an experimental edge. Given both films’ willingness to buck convention, earn raves from terrified viewers, and receive theatrical runs so close together, lumping both Skinamarink and The Outwaters together feels inevitable (even the New York Times had the directors interview each other when reporting on them).
So with that context established, let’s compare. Both are slow burns taking their...

First, there was Terrifier 2, and then there was Skinamarink. Now, the unholy trinity of indie horror completes its circle this weekend when Robbie Banfitch‘s nightmare The Outwaters opens in limited theaters from Cinedigm, Bloody Disgusting, and Screambox.
Beginning its theatrical run Tonight in 100+ theaters, tickets for The Outwaters can be found over at Fandango or on the official website.
While the film’s performance ultimately will decide just how much it expands, we’re kicking the hype to 11 on the cosmic horror that critics are calling “suffocating” and “terrifying”.
If you want to witness a film truly descend straight into the pits of depravity, The Outwaters slow-rolls into the seven levels of Hell and can only be described as Blair Witch Project meets Event Horizon. The film takes viewers off the beaten path and into their own nightmares… Believe the hype.

Plot: The film plays out over three memory cards found in a sun-drenched section of the Mojave Desert. The footage within is that of a foursome, who set out to make a music video while camping, led by a charismatic LA filmmaker. Their trip starts out uneventful, though their peace is occasionally disrupted by unexplained sounds, vibrations, and unnatural animal behavior. Then one night everything changes, sending the foursome on a mind-bending trip through terror.
Review: Found footage is a tricky genre. Since The Blair Witch Project ushered the modern version of the found footage horror movie in 1999, there have been countless attempts to harness the handheld camera approach, with a few films rising above the rest. From Paranormal Activity and V/H/S to Rec and Cloverfield, movies presented as found footage have been dominated by grainy VHS camcorders or night vision security cameras. Made on micro-budgets, found footage is Hollywood...

Cosmic horror operates on a specific, dread-inducing feel of human insignificance in the face of a vast, unknowable threat. Its characters slowly discover how meager their place in the universe is when faced with horrors beyond their reality. Our world is merely a tiny blip in the cosmos, after all.
Robbie Banfitch takes found footage to immersive cosmic horror highs in The Outwaters, releasing in limited theaters on February 9, 2023 from Bloody Disgusting and Cinedigm. In anticipation, this week’s streaming picks capture the unquantifiable terror of cosmic horror.

The horror genre has always found innovative ways to play with generational culture shifts, finding a way to keep its finger on the pulse of modern struggle. Halina Reijn’s Bodies Bodies Bodies aptly tapped into social commentary on Gen Z, bringing a dark sense of humor to its party game-based horror antics. Now, Danny and Michael Philippou concocted the next wild horror sensation with Talk to Me.

Every year it seems there's a horror film that manages to play with convention but ultimately feels fresh and new. Last year, it was "Smile," a horror movie that borrows from the tradition of films where our lead is living on borrowed time like "The Ring." In 2023, it's newcomer writer-director Robbie Banfitch's "The Outwaters," a movie that rightfully feels like our generation's "Blair Witch Project" but also manages to be unique, specific, and wholly singular. More and more often, people jump to conclusions and say that found footage horror is finally dead— but "The Outwaters" is a live wire bursting with cosmic horror rage that promises to live inside you on a loop for as long as the unknown stays unknown.
"The Outwaters" is a collection of footage pulled from three memory cards found in the Mojave Desert that chronicle several days in the life of four friends who...

If you’re drawn to creepy and unsettling imagery like I am, odds are you have likely come across and fallen down the rabbit hole of images online known as “liminal spaces.” These images often portray typically bustling places—streets, malls, schools, sprawling corridors—in their most desolate states, uncharacteristically empty and isolated to the point of being unsettling. The public’s fascination with liminal spaces has been growing in recent years, but the term liminality itself first surfaced in the field of anthropology through the early-to-mid 20th-century work of scholars like Arnold van Gennep and Victor Turner in their study of rituals. Put as simply as can be, liminality describes a state of transition, where someone or something is neither here nor there, connected to what was before and what is to come, but not fully planted in either.

If you saw "Terrifier 2" in theaters, you probably remember feeling unsettled by one particular trailer that played in front of it. That trailer, for a project called "The Outwaters," showcased a ton of eerie, upside-down, and unexplainable footage. If you're anything like me, it's been in the back of your mind ever since.
Well, that initial trailer for "Outwaters" is like a trailer for "The Muppet Movie" in comparison to its latest one. Still flanked with strange imagery and promotional quotes hyping up its scares, it starts to paint a picture of what Robbie Banfitch's film has to offer. Four friends are embarking into the Mojave Desert, dressed in their Coachella finest. Unfortunately, what awaits them is no festival, but the isolating and unforgiving wilderness, one that has been haunted by something truly wicked.

"A terrifying, suffocating viewing experience." Cinedigm has revealed an official trailer for an indie found footage horror thriller called The Outwaters, the latest from director Robbie Banfitch. This premiered at a few smaller festivals last year, including at Panic Fest and originally at the New Jersey Film Festival. Four travelers experience a mind-bending trip through terror while camping in a remote stretch of the Mojave desert. What exactly do they discover out there…? You'll have to watch to find out. Early reviews praise the film, saying that "Banfitch mercilessly lulls viewers with a soothing intro before ripping open a dark abyss beneath them, flinging them into an immersive pit of visceral madness." The film stars Banfitch, along with Angela Basolis, Scott Schamell, and Michelle May. This trailer doesn't give away anything, showing only bits of footage and a few splatters of chaos. Looks like it gets bloody & terrifying out there in the desert.

"A chronicle of omen and doom." That sounds ominous! Cinedigm + Screambox have revealed a first look teaser trailer for some kind of scary indie horror film titled The Outwaters, made by a filmmaker named Robbie Banfitch - who did almost everything on this himself, from sound to FX to editing. It premiered at a few smaller film festivals earlier this year, which is where all the quotes in this trailer are coming from. The synopses provided are all vague: four travelers encounter menacing phenomena while camping in a remote stretch of the Mojave Desert. The trailer is especially vague too, teasing barely anything besides three quick shots, mostly quotes about how crazy and scary and "disturbing" and "divisive" it is. I just wish we could see some more acutal footage. The film stars Banfitch, plus Angela Basolis, Scott Schamell, Michelle May, Leslie Ann Banfitch, Aro Caitlin, and Christine Brown. Check...

Cinedigm has acquired all North American rights to horror film “The Outwaters,” a throwback to the early days of the found footage genre.
Written and directed by Robbie Banfitch, “The Outwaters” plays out over three memory cards found in a sun-drenched section of the Mojave Desert. The footage within is that of a foursome, who set out to make a music video while camping, led by a charismatic filmmaker. Their trip starts out uneventful, though their peace is occasionally disrupted by unexplained sounds, vibrations, and unnatural animal behavior. Then one night everything changes, sending the foursome on a mind-bending trip through terror.
The film is enjoying a festival run and won the jury prize for best feature at the Unnamed Footage Festival. It was also appreciated at Panic Fest, The New Jersey Film Festival and the Chattanooga Film Festival. It will play at the Dead of Night Film Festival in Liverpool in October.
