In the spirit of classic midnight movies, Technoburger serves up a greasy combo meal of cringe comedy and schlock horror in four twisted tales following desperate Americans and their parasitic dependencies on technology. This cyber anthology offers a satirical bite into the near future, where a stoner delivery driver is hacked and stalked by an eccentric billionaire, an erotic Asmr artist transforms into an alien entity, a dogfluencer is haunted by his dearly deceased pet, and a young gamer’s worst fears all come to life. Monsters aren’t hiding under beds anymore, they’re hacking our very existence in this digital dystopian technoburgerfied mashup.

At SXSW this year, I was able to interview three native-Texas actors from the movie Premature, which premiered at the fest (my review). Let's start with Houston native John Karna, who also starred in the 2012 Slamdance audience-award-winning comedy Bindlestiffs (Jette's Dallas Iff review).
Slackerwood: So this is your first big picture?
John Karna: This is, yeah. This is my first paid movie gig, which is awesome they trusted me to do it.
So Bindlestiffs was unpaid?
Karna: Unpaid, it was a passion project with my friends. We just decided when I was in high school, my friends and I -- Andrew Edison who directed and Luke Loftin who wrote it -- we decided to do this improv movie just for fun. And we finished it and submitted it, and it got into Slamdance and won the audience award and Kevin Smith was a huge fan of it, and that was pretty badass.

On an early summer afternoon, amid the sound of squeaky toys and his neighbor's Boxer barking, Houston-based filmmaker Mike Akel and I discussed his segue from teaching to film, his dramedy, An Ordinary Family (Slackerwood's Aff 2011 interview), and his latest foray into the world of tennis.
The co-writer/director of the 2006 award-winning mockumentary Chalk said he and his writing partner, co-film producer Matt Patterson, began working on An Ordinary Family in February 2010 (read Mike's review). The writing process took about four months to complete. After 18 days of filming on location in Austin and Lago Vista in June 2010 and editing in the fall, the film was accepted by the Los Angeles Film Festival and premiered in June 2011. An Ordinary Family went on to receive the Best Feature award at the New Orleans Film Festival and has been released on DVD, and is for rent or sale online through digital channels.

Editor's Note, June 11, 4:45 pm: I've just received word that the Bindlestiffs tour is being postponed, with new dates not yet finalized. I will keep you all posted, and am hoping we can still draw a name and give away tickets when a new date is set. I appreciate all of you who have posted such fascinating comments, and apologize for the delay.
When I saw Bindlestiffs at Dallas International Film Festival in April, I was appalled and offended. And now that it's coming back to Austin, I want to see it again. It's that kind of appalling. This is the first feature from Houston schoolmates Andrew Edison and Luke Loftin, who started working on this movie while they were in high school. They not only co-wrote the film but co-star as two of the three high-school boys whose weekend in the big city -- Houston, although it's not specified -- goes horribly awry.

While Kevin Smith begins to wind down his directing career, he's combining his experience in the industry, online savvy and massive following and putting that energy into his new SModcast Pictures distribution shingle. Using the template established by "Red State," Smith plans to acquire films and present them in a roadshow/touring format in theaters around the country before they get released to VOD and DVD. And for his first release, he's picked up an indie film that will certain benefit from his support.
This year's Slamdance Audience Award winner, "Bindlestiffs," will hit the road in June before landing on VOD at the end of the month, and we've got the exclusive poster for the film below, which gives a pretty good sense of the spirit it will be bringing to the big screen. “Extraterrestrial”
Director: Nacho Vigalondo
Writer: Nacho Vigalondo
Starring: Michelle Jenner, Carlos Areces, Julián Villagrán
“Extraterrestrial” is a movie I’ve been excited about for a while, in part because of how it was marketed – the small, almost invisible glimpses of the alien ships in the posters, and the creative viral marketing aspect to it all. Later on, when it was revealed to be something of a comedy, with a smirking Spaniard looking out and holding a glowing tennis ball, everyone cocked their eyebrows, and wondered just what this thing was going to turn out to be.
It’s a slighter film than one would initially expect, being more dependent on the inter-dynamics of the three people and their ever-revolving love triangle at the heart of it than on any kind of spectacle that you would expect from an alien invasion movie, but that’s not particularly a bad thing. There...

Most of us remember what happened last year at the Sundance Film Festival: Kevin Smith premiered his latest film, Red State, held an auction immediately after, and then bought the rights to his own movie as his way of “going rogue” from the studio system. Lost amidst the theatrics was the announcement of SModcast Pictures, Smith‘s independent distribution arm; outside of a few announcements — and a partnership with Phase 4 Films announced at this year’s Sundance — little news has come out about the endeavor. I had pretty much forgotten about it to be honest… until now.

Some dealmaking has gone down over the past 24 hours, with a handful of indie movies now finding homes and plotting their ways to a screen near you.
First up, the long-shelved Duplass Bros. project "Do-Deca Pentathlon" finally has a home at Fox Searchlight. Production on the film took place back in 2008, but when "Cyrus" got going, post-production was delayed, and the feature's been sitting in a drawer ever since. Starring Steve Zissis, Mark Kelly and Jennifer Lafleur, the story follows two competitive brothers who, during a family reunion, set up a 25-event private Olympics. It sounds great, perfectly in the unique sphere where the Duplass brothers operate, and it's one our most anticipated films at SXSW. With Fox Searchlight nabbing it, the buzz is only sure to increase.
For the reader out there who has been asking about "Hello I Must Be Going," today is your lucky day. Todd Louiso's film,...

The high-school comedy "Bindlestiffs" from writer-director Andrew Edison has gone to Phase 4 Films for North American distribution. The film debuted at Slamdance (where it won the Audience Award for Best Feature Narrative) and is currently at SXSW. The film, co-wrote with Luke Loftin, is about three smart-mouthed high school virgins who, after being suspended from school because of graffiti, flee to the inner city to live out the plot of "The Catcher in the Rye." "Bindlestiffs," with Edison and Loftin also produced, will be the first film released (in June) under Kevin Smith's SModcast Pictures Presents banner. Its release will include a theatrical tour with Q & As between Smith and the filmmakers. Smith says the film is “a ballsy high school comedy that was conceived by real, live high schoolers (who are actually way funnier than the 20-something adults who usually play teens in movies)! This mind-bendingly...

The Dallas International Film Festival has announced 15 of the films in its 2012 lineup, and not only does Texas make a great showing, but Austin is well represented. I'm hoping to attend the festival this year, the selections look so good so far. Some notable non-Texas films include Lawrence Kasdan's Darling Companion, which has former Austinite Mark Duplass in the cast; The Brooklyn Brothers Beat the Best, the directorial debut of actor Ryan O'Nan (The Dry Land), and Takashi Shimizu's Tormented.

Ten narratives and eight documentaries are lined up for the 2012 Slamdance Film Festival Competition. Variety's Dave McNary reports that two titles "already generating buzz are Bindlestiffs in the feature lineup and We Are Legion: The Story of Hacktavists in documentaries. Bindlestiffs, directed by Andrew Edison, stars Andrew Edison, Luke Loftin and John Karna as smart-mouthed high school virgins, who are suspended from school on a graffiti charge and flee to the inner city to live out the plot of The Catcher in the Rye. We Are Legion, directed and written by Brian Knappenberger, is a look inside the world of Anonymous, the radical 'hacktivist' collective that's redefined civil disobedience for the digital age."
