You’ve got to feel sorry for the fine folks at the San Diego Comic-Con. The Covid-19 pandemic shut the popular convention down in 2020, and it was forced into holding a much smaller convention – the “Comic-Con Special Edition” – in November 2021 after being unable to host its normal summertime pop culture event safely. Sdcc returned in 2022, but with strict Covid protocols in place.
2023 was thought to be the year the San Diego Comic-Con would spring back to life. But that wasn’t in the cards. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike, which meant many panel participants wouldn’t be able to attend. And then complicating matters, the Screen Actors Guild voted to authorize a strike if they couldn’t come to an agreement with the Alliance of Motion...

Composer Sherri Chung admits she was late to the “Gremlins” party — only because she was too young and found it too scary. But when she grew older and was reintroduced to the movie, she thought “it was the greatest thing ever.”
The 1984 film, as well as Jerry Goldsmith’s score, became a key inspiration for her. So when she got the opportunity to score Max’s new animated series “Gremlins: Secret of the Mogwai,” directed by Tze Chun, she decided to “lean into the scary and the fear, but also the emotion” with her music.
The series is an origin story that gives a partial explanation as to how Gizmo ends up in a Chinatown antique store at the beginning of 1984’s “Gremlins.” To add a Chinese element to the score, Chung used bamboo flutes, but the meat of the score came from the erhu, a two-stringed bowed musical instrument...

Fans of Joe Dante’s “Gremlins” (1984) wanting to know how mysterious shop owner Mr. Wing (Keye Luke) first met Gizmo (Howie Mandel) and the rest of the mogwai creatures finally get an answer in the new animated prequel “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai” (now streaming on Max). In this new origin story from showrunner Tze Chun (“I’m a Virgo”) and executive producer Brendan Hay (“Robot Chicken”), 10-year-old Sam Wing (Izaac Wang) and young Gizmo (Aj LoCascio) attempt to transport the mogwai from 1920 Shanghai to their ancestral home in the Valley of Jade.
The pair are accompanied by teenage street thief Ellie (Gabrielle Nevaeh) and pursued by sorcerer/industrialist Riley Greene (Matthew Rhys), who knows how destructive the mogwai can be if exposed to water or fed after midnight and wants them for his own army of assassins.

With the new series “Kung Fu,” Sherri Chung becomes the first Asian-American woman responsible for the music of an hour-long network drama — and the choice could not be more perfect.
Chung has moved up through the ranks of television composers, working over the past four years on numerous Greg Berlanti-produced series including “Blindspot,” “Riverdale” and “Batwoman.”
But with the CW’s reimagining of the 1970s classic “Kung Fu,” Chung not only tackles the music of a talked-about series but is rediscovering her own personal heritage as well. “I was equal parts excited and terrified,” she confesses. “This series is celebrating both Chinese culture and Chinese-American culture. It’s breaking down old rules and walls, and creating a new narrative. I feel like I’m really part of that, which is special and totally unexpected.”
Chung is second generation Chinese-American: Her father is Chinese, although born in the U.S.

The team of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross leads all nominees for the second annual Society of Composers and Lyricists Awards, the organization of scorers and songwriters active in visual media.
The composing duo (who won an Oscar 10 years ago for “The Social Network” and an Emmy last year for “Watchmen”) received three nominations. They were cited for outstanding original score for a studio film for both their 2020 films, Netflix’s “Mank” and Disney-Pixar’s “Soul.” They share the “Soul” nod with composer Jon Batiste, who contributed the jazz threaded throughout the film.
Reznor and Ross received a third nomination, for outstanding original song for visual media, for their song “(If Only You Could) Save Me,” written for “Mank.”
Scl’s list is notable for the dominance of women composers in the category of outstanding original score for an independent film — three of the five nominees: Lolita Ritmanis for the...

Being “nice” can sometimes be a backhanded compliment. A romantic film, one seeking to warm an audience’s heart, usually doesn’t have too much of an edge. There’s nothing wrong with being “nice,” especially when the material calls for it. However, when you wind up with something that’s only “nice” and doesn’t offer up anything else, it leaves you lacking. The Lost Husband is a prime example of this. Sure, it’s pleasant and has its heart in the right place, but that doesn’t mean that the end result isn’t bland and without narrative thrust. On Demand this weekend, it’s a harmless offering that nonetheless leaves you wanting more. This flick is a romance, introducing us to Libby (Leslie Bibb) a short time after the sudden death of her husband. Unhappy in her current situation, stuck living with her mother, Libby is offered...

The Newman scoring stage at 20th Century-Fox was overflowing with people – and good will – as Ascap last night celebrated the 30th anniversary of its Film Scoring Workshop with a studio recording session for the 12 lucky young composers chosen to participate.
“This is like a window into the time continuum, where you can look into the future and see those who are going to make a real contribution to film music,” Ascap president and chairman Paul Williams said. “It’s a cultural gift in one sense, but on another level it’s a really smart business investment.”
The performing-rights society sponsors this four-week event for emerging film and TV composers every summer, with Emmy winner Richard Bellis at the helm.
