Fitness has become a major issue of concern in cricket at present. A cricketer looks far leaner, fitter, more agile and athletic than ever before.
However, frequent breakdowns seem to be the norm of a cricketer’s life today, even though, they now travel and stay in comfort and have a staff of professionals at their beck and call to look after them.
A line from the famous poem “Little Man Cricketer” written by Frank Jones comes to mind, “Cricket is a game for a real live man, keep fit little man keep fit”. The poem goes on to talk of various aspects of the game, from dropping a catch to winning or losing or getting out on the very first ball and through it all it says, “Just smile”.
Unfortunately, “just smile” is exactly what the fans and followers of cricket are putting up with as regards players’ fitness.

Manchester, July 20 (Ians) England cricketer Moeen Ali on Thursday entered an exclusive club of men’s Test all-round cricketers, who have the double of 3,000 runs and 200 wickets, on day two of ongoing fourth Ashes 2023 Test at Old Trafford, here.
Coming out to bat at number three, Ali was unbeaten on 31 at lunch. He became the 16th men’s cricketer to achieve the Test all-rounders’ double of 3,000 runs and 200 wickets.
Moeen had 200 wickets and 2,977 runs in Test cricket before the start of the ongoing Ashes Test at Old Trafford. He crossed 3000 Test runs after hitting back-to-back fours off Australia captain Pat Cummins in the 14th over, as England reached 61-1 at lunch.
“I think we forget what a good young batter Moeen was. Anyone watching a young Moeen growing up would say ‘this lad can bat’. ‘That is the reason he has said he wants to bat at No 3’.

Cricket has never had such an enormous and variable audience and therefore, quite rightly so, a plethora of ideas and innovations are cropping up to make the game even more interesting. The famous marketing line of a “customer is always right” is the mantra that the cricketers and the marketeers are vociferously following. The cricket fans want action, glamour, heroes and trend setters and the T20 format is ideally suited to provide that.
The changes in the rules of cricket, therefore, are being gradually tested on the shorter format of the game and in tournaments that are independently run, like the Indian Premier League (Ipl). The “Impact” player option has been introduced in this years’ edition of the Ipl and one can already see its usefulness.
Most of the coaches in the Ipl have come forth positively about it, as it does make a side’s decision making of a playing eleven that much easier.

Auckland, March 23 (Ians) Amelia Kerr and Daryl Mitchell have been recognised as winners of top honours in the New Zealand Cricket Awards ceremony, here. While Amelia won the inaugural Debbie Hockley Medal awarded to outstanding women’s cricketer, Mitchell was named winner of the Sir Richard Hadlee Medal awarded to outstanding men’s cricketer.
Mitchell, who also won the Redpath Cup for men’s first-class batting, was recognised for a stand-out year across the board but particularly at Test level, where he scored four centuries, played a leading hand in New Zealand’s last ball win against Sri Lanka at Christchurch, and rose to number eight in the Test batting rankings.
Mitchell amassed 913 Test runs at an average of 70.23, including a highest score of 190 against England at Trent Bridge last year. In 16 Test innings he scored 50 or more on nine occasions. Amelia, on the other hand, was also named the...

Auckland, May 25 (Ians) Virat Kohli's on-field aggression is justified as it helps in unsettling opposition, a tactic necessary for India skipper since he faces enormous pressure to win from fans, said former New Zealand all-rounder Richard Hadlee.
"I quite like seeing any player expressing themself (sic) towards the opposition by having a real presence -- it is a form of intimidation that can be unsettling, and a tactic used by many sportspeople," said Hadlee in an interview to International Cricket Council (Icc).
"I see Virat as being a very passionate and competitive cricketer with a strong desire for himself and the team to succeed. The pressure and expectations on him to 'win' is enormous. There are millions of Indian fans who idolise him which puts great pressure on him. Virat is responsible for ensuring that Indian cricket remains competitive and be one of the best teams in the world,...

Auckland, May 25 (Ians) Jasprit Bumrah is prone and vulnerable to injuries due to his unorthodox bowling action but India fast bowler's technique has proved highly effective in helping him catch batsmen off guard, said former New Zealand all-rounder Richard Hadlee.
"Jasprit fits into the unorthodox bowling category with virtually no run up to the crease. His technique, in some ways, defies belief but has proved to be a highly effective one. He is what I call a shoulder or strength bowler with all his power and pace coming from the final part of his action as he releases the ball," said Hadlee in an interview with the International Cricket Council (Icc).
The Kiwi, a former pace bowler himself, said he is unsure about Bumrah's longevity in cricket.
"Jasprit's longevity in the game is yet to be determined. I suspect he could be more vulnerable to injury problems than those fast...

Auckland, May 25 (Ians) Cricket needs India due to the revenue it generates and also strides it has made in Test cricket that has kept longest format of the game alive, said former New Zealand all-rounder Richard Hadlee.
"There is no doubt India produces a lot of revenue for cricket. Without India, the face of world cricket would be very different, therefore cricket needs India," said Hadlee, who formed a world-class quartet of all-rounders in 1970s and 1980s along with Imran Khan, Kapil Dev and Ian Botham.
"But India has also made an outstanding contribution to Test cricket -- like in all formats. Their Test performances in Australia were outstanding despite that 36 all out blip. They bounced back superbly, and Test cricket came alive again. So many youngsters came into the team and performed. It showed the great depth of talented players India have in all formats," Hadlee added while speaking to the Times of India.

He then got rid of Suranga Lakmal to get his sixth wicket of the innings.
Anderson had taken three of the four Sri Lankan wickets to fall on the first day.
He removed centurion Angelo Mathews early on second day, in just his first over of the morning. The former Sri Lanka captain edged one behind to wicket-keeper Jos Buttler.
Anderson is the fourth highest wicket-taker in Test cricket and the best among pace bowlers with 606 scalps.

Showing off their collective athletic prowess, Prince William and Kate Middleton grabbed their cricket bats and headed off to a 2015 Cricket World Cup event in Christchurch, New Zealand today (April 14).
Dressed in formal finery, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge eschewed all propriety and took the field, swinging at a number of balls while the enamored crowed cheered them on.
Cricket legend Sir Richard Hadlee helped the Royals hone their chops, and it turns out Will made an impression when all was said and done.
Hadlee told press, "He played a very nice cover drive which I was impressed with. It got to the stage where he may have needed a helmet on one occasion but he did get the ball away nicely on the leg side and a very good one there over the fence too. There might have been one or two hockey shots there but there's nothing wrong with that!
