Several Pink Floyd songs became classic rock staples. But not right away. How the band developed led to some trying times. Keyboard player Rick Wright never listened to his two embarrassing Pink Floyd songs after the band recorded them.
Pink Floyd’s Rick Wright said two of his songs were ‘sort of an embarrassment’
Pink Floyd parted ways with founding member, guitarist, and principal songwriter Syd Barrett in early 1968. His declining mental state made life hard on his bandmates. In concert, Barrett changed arrangements to songs on the fly, played the wrong chords (or none at all), and sang the wrong lyrics. So the rest of Pink Floyd — Wright, Roger Waters, Nick Mason, and David Gilmour — decided to move on without him.
The only trouble was they sacked Barrett before finishing their second album, A Saucerful of Secrets.

Mubi is showing the retrospective The Inner Demons of Ingmar Bergman from June 8 - August 28, 2017 in the United Kingdom.I've told this brief story of how I fell under the spell of cinema so many times I've become brazen to it. At eighteen years, in February 1993, I found Ingmar Bergman's Cries and Whispers (dubbed) at the video store. As Woody Allen spoke of the Swede in hushed tones, I decided I should try a film. Ninety minutes later I sat stunned and spellbound, not sure what to do or think, but surely sure I must be onto something. Cinematic rapture still has a psychical aspect for me, the torque the sedentary body goes through while coping with the images before it. I can always tell how good a film is if my armpits smell after. The body doesn't lie. Ingmar Bergman is an easy crush—one writer I know...

The evolution of animation on television has been thrilling to behold over the last several years, as creators use the medium’s unlimited potential to explore what is possible not just on a visual level, but on a storytelling level.
It doesn’t matter the target audience — some of the most emotional narratives, relevant satire and beautiful filmmaking on television this century has its roots in a format that many might write off as “just for kids.” Not so: Animation, like television in general, is very much a writers’ medium. That’s why even writers rooted in live-action series, like Dan Harmon and Bill Lawrence, have found themselves dabbling in the animated world.
Below, IndieWire spotlights some of the most important and relevant series of the binge TV era, with series that excites not in spite of the fact that it’s animated, but because of it.

It seems that HBO’s music-biz drama was a one-hit wonder. The network has canceled “Vinyl” after a disappointing first season that saw showrunner Terence Winter (previously of “Boardwalk Empire” and “The Sopranos,” also for HBO) forced out of the band in April. Disappointing ratings plagued the series, which stars Bobby Cannavale as a struggling record executive in the 1970s, from its inception.

“After careful consideration, we have decided not to proceed with a second season of ‘Vinyl’,” said HBO in a statement. “Obviously, this was not an easy decision. We have enormous respect for the creative team and cast for their hard work and passion on this project.” HBO is said to have spent $100 million on the 10-episode first season of the show, nearly a third of which went to the two-hour series premiere.

The Kardashian-Jenner clan and Game of Thrones have surprisingly deep connections. Both are family sagas full of treachery, betrayal and shiny hair. Both are full of power struggles, whether the players are battling to take Winterfell or Miami. Both are dominated by queens who like the men around them to be muscle-bound and obedient. The image might be one unified rich family: House Kardashian.

All week long our writers will debate: Which was the greatest film year of the past half century. Click here for a complete list of our essays. How to decide in the grand scheme of things which film year stands above all others? History gives us no clear methodology to unravel this thorny but extremely important question. Is it the year with the highest average score of movies? So a year that averages out to a B + might be the winner over a field strewn with B’s, despite a few A +’s. Or do a few masterpieces lift up a year so far that whatever else happened beyond those three or four films is of no consequence? Both measures are worthy, and the winner by either of those would certainly be a year not to be sneezed at. But I contend the only true measure of a year’s...

Even while watching the film unfold before one’s eyes, it is hard to believe that This is the End exists. Not necessarily because the humor is so ludicrously silly and completely unhinged at every possible turn – though I certainly cannot pinpoint the last time I encountered a big studio comedy this ruthlessly deranged – but because in addition to being screamingly funny, the film’s larger ambitions are surprisingly high, and it executes pretty spectacularly on just about everything it sets out to do.
Be it Hollywood satire, apocalyptic mayhem, thrilling action set pieces, or most importantly, legitimately sharp character work and thematic insight, This is the End plays host to a broad swath of impressive cinematic accomplishments. The many elements this film nails should not work together so seamlessly, and yet there is the proof, right there on screen, nestled between James Franco and Danny McBride having a ridiculous,...

The Voice's top six contestants had two chances to shine on Monday, when each singer performed a song of their choice and one picked by his or her mentor. And it was a mixed bag of music! Team Adam Melanie Martinez didn't stray far from her trademark soft vocals, but took a slight detour from her usually haunting songs with Cee Lo Green's "Crazy" and "The Show" by Lenka. Christina Aguilera, whose contestants have all left the show, suggested she try more sultry songs. But Green approved: "In many ways we're cut from the same cloth, honey," he told her.

Her character, Katie, reunites with three friends, fellow members of the high school clique the B-Faces, for a wedding, and right from the start, she's ready to party. When Katie and Regan (Kirsten Dunst) get high on cocaine and decide to try on the bride's dress together, it rips, and they're forced to race around New York City trying to get it fixed before the wedding the next morning. Considering it's where most of us (bar the weird home-schooled kids) spend our crucial formative years, where we have our first fights, our first loves, our first tentative steps into adulthood, it's no surprise that high school has long been a popular setting for movies. A range of genres (though generally leaning towards comedy) have taken place in those hallways, particularly from the 1980s onwards, when John Hughes, among others, made an entire career out of the lives and loves of 15-18 year olds.
The latest film to head back to class is "21 Jump Street" (review here) the big-screen reboot of the '80s TV show, which stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as youthful-looking cops who are sent back to high school in order to bust a drug-running ring. After scrolling through 91 pages of photos (yes, really) of Lea Michele we can safely say this: Lea Michele for All the red carpet posing awards. This woman is a master, a professional, an icon of the carpet who has risen through the ranks in less than two years. What took Jennifer Lopez, Angelina Jolie and Beyonce years to craft has taken this starlet months, and dare we say – she may just outshine them all. Lea’s obvious love of the spotlight (she was a Broadway performer before Gleeking out, after all) is enhanced by an adorable bod and amazing outfit picks by her stylist. She’s also trained in the art of contortion and knows how to twist and turn her body in such a way that she looks like a lightening bolt dressed in a Marchesa gown. But what’s most impressive is that Lea has a whole playbook of poses at her disposal!

The Battle Of Algiers: The Criterion Collection (1966)
Synopsis: One of the most influential political films in history, The Battle of Algiers, by Gillo Pontecorvo, vividly re-creates a key year in the tumultuous Algerian struggle for independence from the occupying French in the 1950s. As violence escalates on both sides, children shoot soldiers at point-blank range, women plant bombs in cafe’s, and French soldiers resort to torture to break the will of the insurgents. Shot on the streets of Algiers in documentary style, the film is a case study in modern warfare, with its terrorist attacks and the brutal techniques used to combat them. Pontecorvo’s tour de force has astonishing relevance today. (criterion.com)
Special Features:
High-definition digital transfer, supervised by director of photography Marcello Gatti (with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition). Gillo Pontecorvo: The Dictatorship of Truth,...

Winning accolades and fans across the festival circuit for the past year, and comparisons to material as far and wide as Ken Loach and The Sopranos (although in all fairness it is neither of those things, more like deader-than-deadpan Coen Brothers absurdity) Down Terrace has been playing in limited release for a month, and is opening in Canada commercially at the Carlton Theatre in Toronto (before expanding out to Vancouver) November 12th. I have been shamelessly been sitting on a lengthy chat with writer/director Ben Wheatley while the film played at the Fantasia Film Festival back in July. He left his copy of Sight & Sound behind as he took off to the airport after our conversation, which I scored (snack-cake!) but don't tell him. A prolific advertisement and TV director, he is as film literate and verbose has one would expect from a genre-mashing drama/comedy/gangster picture with literate and verbose characters.

Last week, London’s Leicester Square saw the biggest influx of action hero’s it had seen for a very, very long time. I am of course talking about the premiere of Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables. Starring Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Mickey Rourke, Steve Austin and Eric Roberts, the film is an homage to action films of a bygone era.
As well as storming the red carpet in Leicester Square, the cast were also on hand for the official press conference, take a look below for the full Q&A from the session:
Q: At the screening last week there was a massive round of applause before the film even started, and as each star name appeared there were whoops of joy. To what extent does that level of excitement and expectation bring extra challenges or responsibilities to do something really special with The Expendables?...

Directed by: Robert Luketic
Cast: Ashton Kutcher, Katherine Heigl, Tom Selleck, Catherine O’Hara
Running Time: 1 hr 40 mins

Plot: Spencer (Kutcher) is a great catch. At least that’s what Jen (Heigl) thinks. Turns out he is a spy trying to get out of the business. After three years of the perfect suburban life, his cover is blown and every where he looks, someone he knows is trying to kill him.
Who’S It For? Do you want to turn off your brain, get one or two chuckles, look at pretty people, and then go to bed? Then save this to Netflix now.

Tonight, Lost fans get an episode that's been a looooong time coming. At last: Richard Alpert’s backstory. I have so many questions that I doubt a single episode can answer all of them. But a few? It's all here in this week's addition of On DVD and Blu-ray... Enjoy! Body of Lies Just yesterday I posted my Blu-ray review of Body of Lies, which is an impressive release in high definition on top of the fact I think it is also a good movie and definitely one to consider picking up this week and certainly the best new release in terms of non-catalog titles. I don't have a copy of the DVD edition, but if you are a Blu-ray owner you could do a lot worse than this release.
