After four years as head coach of the USC Trojans men's basketball team, Kevin O'Neill has been fired, the school announced Monday. During his first two seasons the team fared well. However, Yahoo reports, after a rash of injuries the Trojans ended the 2011-2012 season at 6-26, placing them dead last in their conference.
The 2012-2013 season features the return of many injured players, but even that couldn't fix the team as they continued to play below average. In a statement, Athletic Director Pat Haden thanks O'Neill for his service but says, "As the season progressed, it became evident to me that we needed new leadership in our men's basketball program."
O'Neill was thankful for his time with the team, saying, "I couldn't be more proud to work anywhere." Assistant coach Bob Cantu will take over in the interim until a permanent replacement is found.
