If you wonder what motivates a band after three decades together, ask the Old 97’s. “It feels so unlikely that we’re here, in this moment, in our career and in our lives, and we’ve built something that’s really pretty unimpeachable,” Rhett Miller tells me. We’re sitting in his office — the basement room in his Hudson Valley, New York, home where he writes, seeks inspiration, and often streams solo shows online. “I don’t want to fuck it up.”

Southern Rock Opera or The Dirty South? Ask any Drive-By Truckers fan to name the band’s recorded masterpiece and you’ll likely get a spirited debate. On Tuesday, the group makes their own case for the latter with the announcement of a massive package titled The Complete Dirty South. Due June 16, The Complete Dirty South revisits the 2004 concept album about the South and its complicated figures with bonus tracks, remixed songs, and even new vocals on “Puttin’ People on the Moon” and “The Sands of Iwo Jima.” (The group...

While most contemporary music documentaries fall into the realm of self-produced hagiography, no one will be making that charge about “Jason Isbell: Running With Our Eyes Closed,” a clear-eyes/hearts-full documentary coming from HBO Max documentary that had its world premiere at the Grammy Museum.
At a Q&a with Isbell and director Sam Jones following the screening of the film, which begins streaming April 7, moderator Colin Hanks, a big Isbell fan, asked the doc’s star: “What was it about this that made you go, ‘Yeah, I’m gonna do a doc,’ and really make yourself a little bit more raw than maybe you had even in your songs?”
“It’s because I didn’t know what was about to happen,” responded Isbell. “The whole reason I did this was because I was not informed of the consequences of doing this.” He was half-joking. “I just told Sam before...

"I won't be satisfied unless this album is an accurate representation of where I am as a person." HBO has revealed an official trailer for the music documentary Jason Isbell: Running With Our Eyes Closed, one of the latest offerings in exec producer Bill Simmons' Music Box series for HBO. Intimately shot and revealing the inner workings of a major artist, the documentary is a unique film about a talented singer – Jason Isbell. As the four-time Grammy winner connects the dots from his childhood in rural Alabama to battling alcoholism during his time with the band Drive-By Truckers, to the current state of his marriage, he acknowledges the crucial part that music has played in his life, the outlet it provides for his artistry, and the comfort it brings him in times of difficulty. It's described as an intimate look at life, love, and perseverance. Running With Our Eyes Closed...

Jason Isbell is the subject of HBO’s latest Music Box documentary Running with Our Eyes Closed, which has now received its official trailer. Watch it below.
Going behind the scenes of Isbell’s recording of 2020’s Reunions with his band The 400 Unit, the docufilm is directed and produced by Sam Jones (Tony Hawk: Until the Wheels Fall Off). In addition to pulling back the curtain on his creative process, Isbell opens up about his difficult childhood in rural Alabama and struggles with alcoholism while as a member of Drive-By Truckers. The Covid-19 pandemic brings an additional layer to the documentary, challenging the artist to take self-doubt head-on.
Running with Our Eyes Closed also provides a close look at Isbell’s relationship with his wife (and acclaimed artist in her own right) Amanda Shires, showing how their artistic collaboration both strengthens and complicates their marriage. “I know how he gets when he makes records,...

A world-class outdoor venue inspired by ancient Roman designs is probably the last thing you’d expect to find in Huntsville, Alabama, but the city’s new Orion Amphitheater is all about exceeding expectations. Which actually makes perfect sense for a town that’s primarily known for sending rockets into outer space.
Funded by the city’s capital plan and a percentage of future hotel taxes, the 40 million, 8000-capacity Orion is a perfect complement to the fast-growing north Alabama city. It was also created with the idea of community in mind,...

Drive-By Truckers recall their early days as a bar band — under the name of Adam’s House Cat — in the wryly nostalgic trip “Welcome 2 Club Xii.” It’s a song torn from the pages of their own experience, when Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley struggled to keep the attention of hair-metal fans during bad opening-slot gigs.
“Sidewinders in spandex/the parking lot is packed…meanwhile Adam’s House Cat is the opening act/with train songs and ‘People Who Died,’” Hood sings, nodding to the Jim Carroll Band song the band still covers today.

The 2021 Newport Folk Festival (technically titled “Folk On”) is, for obvious reasons, much different than past installments: Coming off a year of mass tragedy and societal reckoning, this year’s event, ongoing through July 28th, features double the amount of days — six instead of three — reduced capacity, and fewer stages. The first three days were the folkiest in recent memory: more acoustic, more intimate, and more traditionally minded than usual. Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley delivered their timeless Drive-By Trucker tunes as an acoustic duo, Katie Crutchfield performed highlights from her 2020 opus,...

The Flaming Lips have shared a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Lay Lady Lay” from the upcoming compilation, Dylan Revisited, which will be released alongside the June issue of the British magazine Uncut.
The Flaming Lips’ cover of “Lay Lady Lay” is at once reverent to the original Nashville Skyline track and willing to take it to characteristically strange places. Though anchored by a simple acoustic strum, frontman Wayne Coyne slathers his vocals in reverb, adding a psychedelic edge to the tune which the Lips continue to toy with throughout the track.

In June 1997, singer-songwriter Billy Yates, whose hard-country vocals were reminiscent of Keith Whitley, released his self-titled debut album, populated with classic-leaning honky-tonk tunes all co-written by the Missouri native. Five years earlier, one of Yates’ most famous tunes became a minor radio hit and a major music-video event for country legend George Jones and a group of Jones’ disciples. “I Don’t Need Your Rockin’ Chair” was a rallying cry aimed at country radio, whose narrow playlists were squeezing out older and more traditional country acts in favor of young pop-country hitmakers.

Despite being separated by the global pandemic, the members of Drive-By Truckers unite for a bona fide quarantine love song. “Quarantine Together” imagines dating in the social distancing age, with Patterson Hood promising that if his new love interest will just come over to his place, he’ll stay six feet away. At least for the time being.
“What if we acclimate and call this isolation a date/Maybe enough time could go by we could be each other’s mistake,” he sings in one of the verses, before making his argument in the chorus.

Jason Isbell has released “Only Children,” the third track he’s shared from Reunions, his forthcoming studio album with the 400 Unit. The ballad follows lead single “Be Afraid,” with its empowering chorus to “do it anyway,” and the moody seven-minute opus “What’ve I Done to Help.”
“Only Children” is the most sparse, nostalgic offering from Isbell’s Reunions to date, weaving an intimate tale of two up-and-coming bohemians. “Will you read me what you wrote?/The one I said you stole from Dylan,” Isbell sings on the four-minute, largely acoustic track.

For anyone who thought 2016’s American Band would be the most explicitly political record of the Drive-By Truckers career, the quintet has nine new songs that’ll likely convince you otherwise. In 2016, the longtime road warriors found new life with its election year treatise, which saw the band more revved up than they had been in more than a decade, delivering screeds about unsexy topics like the violent history of the confederate flag and the white supremacist roots of the NRA.

Rhett Miller is an expert storyteller. It’s a skill that came in handy during the singer-songwriter’s solo set onboard the Outlaw Country Cruise when he broke two guitar strings over the course of three songs on Tuesday night. When Americana pioneers Uncle Tupelo released their major-label debut, Anodyne on October 5th, 1993, it should have been the beginning of something big.
In a way, it was. Led by Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy from tiny Belleville, Illinois, the alt-country movement’s promising breakout band was packing clubs in major cities across America and Europe, not just the college towns where they spent years building their fan base.
They were following up their left-turn acoustic record, March 16-20, 1992, recorded with R.E.M.’s Peter Buck, with their best record...

More than a decade before Drive-By Truckers released their first album, singer-songwriters Mike Cooley and Patterson Hood formed a fledgling North Alabama band called Adam’s House Cat. The group, which included Chuck Tremblay on drums and a revolving door of bassists, was more openly influenced by its mid-late 80’s indie contemporaries than the history-obsessed Truckers, who would take on more anachronistic subject matter when they began making their Skynyrd-obsessed Southern-punk later in the mid-late 90’s.

The date is November 25th, 1990, and Mike Cooley and Patterson Hood are upstairs at Muscle Shoals Sound Recording Studio cutting an album — not for Drive-By Truckers, but for their first band, Adam’s House Cat. Twenty-eight years later, that album, Town Burned Down, is about to see the light of day, with a sneak peek in the form of the snotty punk rock of “Runaway Train.”

Lance Bangs, who’s directed music videos for the likes of Nirvana, Sting and Sonic Youth, has added a new band to his list of collaborators: Drive-By Truckers. The politically charged video for “Surrender Under Protest” is out now and features a performance from the Southern rock group alongside footage from Black Lives Matter protests. Watch it below.

“I’ve long been a fan of Lance’s work and instinctively knew he would know exactly the perfect visual element for this song,” Patterson Hood, who sings and plays guitar in the group, told Pitchfork of the collaboration. “Just like the song encapsulates a period of unrest and change for America, its accompanying video brings that message to life with images of a divided, but still united nation.”

For six years, Jason Isbell was drunk at every show he played. During his tenure with beloved Southern rockers Drive-By Truckers, Isbell planned his drinking to keep him on his feet for the duration of the band's marathon live shows - barely. "I had it timed where, by the very end of the show, I'd done just about all I could do standing up," he told NPR in 2013. "I knew I needed two or three before I went on, and then during the show, we'd just pass a bottle around between the band." The routine totaled about a fifth of Jack Daniels per show.

The follow-up to 2011’s Go-Go Boots, English Oceans is the 12th studio effort from Drive-By Truckers. The album was recorded in under two weeks in Athens, Ga. with the band’s longtime producer David Barbe. According to the band, the songwriting duties were split evenly between co-founders Mike Cooley, who brought six new songs to the album, and Patterson Hood.

Johnny Cash: Blood, Sweat and Tears (Columbia)
Some of Cash's '60s concept albums were burdened with much too talking between tracks; here the tribute to the American working man gets to mostly stand alone on its musical merits, and shines. Notably, it incluces the top version of the traditional "John Henry"” about the most legendarily heroic working man ever, and the version of "Casey Jones" here is classic as well. Politically and psychologically, Cash was the perfect man for this job.
1968
Byrds: Notorious Byrd Brothers (Columbia)
Sometimes transitional albums, confusing listeners expecting a group's earlier style, are underrated. Not so with this classic. It's true that it didn't sell as well as earlier Byrds LPs, nor did the single from the album chart very high, but for decades Notorious Byrd Brothers has been widely revered, and not just by fans; some critics have even anointed it as the band's best album.

The key to any voyage into the twangy depths of this weekend's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival is planning.
San Francisco's annual free celebration of bluegrass (and also not bluegrass) in Golden Gate Park, now in its 12th consecutive year, has gotten so popular that shuttling between stages to see all of your favorite bands can prove virtually impossible. Instead, the best idea is often just to get there early, pick a spot near the stage you're most interested in and stay there for the long haul.
(Scroll Down For Playlist And Lineup)
While the lineup was announced months ago, the actual full schedule, complete with set times, was only released recently. Essential planning's gotta all be done Right This Very Second.
Our top recommendations are Ben Kweller, Buddy Miller, Robert Earl Keen, The Dirty Three, the Heartless Bastards, Son Volt and Les Claypool's Duo De Twang. If you're curious as to why this is exciting,...

Patterson Hood and the Downtown 13 are set to release “After it’s Gone,” a single to try to keep a Walmart from being built in Athens, Ga. Hood, who also fronts Drive-By Truckers, started the group to make a stand against America’s biggest retailer. The development that’s being protested is a proposed “building of a massive mixed use development in downtown Athens, anchored by a 94,000 square foot Walmart.”...

Let's kick things off with someone who's familair with disappointment, that being the natural state of the music fan. The sufferer this time is darceysdad, who, as well as participating in the thread beneath our four-star review of the new Drive-By Truckers album, emailed in his own review of the disc (something you're all welcome to do, by the way – to michael.hann@guardian.co.uk. You don't even have to be reviewing Drive-By Truckers). Darceysdad's disappointment stemmed from their last album, and this one lifted his spirits only slightly: "One of the major issues evident to me – but seemingly not to the band – is regular producer David Barbe. He and [the DBTs'] Patterson Hood are too comfortable with each other, resulting in neither pushing the other to achieve more than 'just enough'." Particular ire was reserved for a song our review – well,...

Patterson Hood and crew made a series of mini-documentaries related to the various themes and influences the band explores on their next album, "Go-Go Boots." The eight episodes are a companion to this, their ninth studio album, due out Feb. 15th. The episode below, directed with Jason Thrasher, delves into the band's relationship with the music and mythology of Eddie Hinton -- the obscure soul singer whom Hood described as "if Otis Redding met Howlin' Wolf somewhere in the middle."
"Back in the 60's and 70's, Eddie Hinton lived and recorded in my hometown of Muscle Shoals Alabama where he was a part of the thriving music scene that was based there," Hood explains. "A triple threat (singer, guitar player and songwriter) Eddie participated in hit music by Percy Sledge, Bobby Womack, Aretha Franklin, Boz Scaggs, Dusty Springfield.... Later he made several incredible albums as a solo artist."
