“Trial and Error” has been canceled after two seasons on NBC, TheWrap has learned.
As TheWrap previously reported, the broadcaster’s option on the true crime spoof lapsed last August and Warner Bros. Television planned to shop the comedy to other outlets. At the time, NBC had not formally passed on renewing the mockumentary series, meaning it was still in play for a third season, but the studio was free to explore other options.
A source tells TheWrap the studio did try to get “Trial and Error” picked up elsewhere, but there is currently no home for the series. However, Warner Bros is still open to an opportunity to continue the show, should it find a new home in the future.

Crime comedy Trial & Error is still without a new home following the cancellation by NBC, and there are no current prospects for a third season. “We are open to an opportunity to continue the series, should one arise in the future,” producing studio Warner Bros. TV said in a statement.
When NBC opted not to pick up a third season last August, the rights reverted back to Wbtv. Since options on the series’ regular cast had not expired yet, Wbtv used the window to shop the show elsewhere, but without success. I hear the options of the cast have expired since then and, should the concept be revived in the future, new deals need to be made with actors, which makes a third season even more unlikely.

NBC’s option on “Trial & Error” has lapsed, and Warner Bros. Television is now planning to shop the comedy to other outlets, TheWrap has learned.
According to an individual familiar with the matter, NBC has not formally passed on renewing the true crime mockumentary series, meaning the network could still be in play for a third season, but the studio is now free to explore other options.
For the currently-airing second season, NBC shifted the show from weekly installments in the spring to hourlong blocks in the summer, where it has suffered some losses in viewership. However, the show is only two weeks into its 10-episode run, which is likely why NBC has yet to make a decision about a renewal.
The comedy, led by Nicholas D’Agosto and Kristin Chenoweth in Season 2, is a send up of “Making a Murderer”-style true crime docu-series.

I have learned that NBC’s option to renew Trial & Error for a third season has lapsed, reverting the rights to the crime comedy back to producing studio Warner Bros TV. I hear the options on the series’ regular cast have not expired yet, and Wbtv will be using the window to shop the show elsewhere.
With its serialized nature — each season following a different murder case — Trial & Error looks better suited for binge viewing on a streaming platform. The comedy’s first season, which was well reviewed, starred John Lithgow, and the current second season, headlined by Kristin Chenoweth, received even stronger reviews (91% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes vs. 86% in Season 1).
On NBC, Trial & Error’s linear ratings have been modest and expectedly slipped from Season 1 to Season 2 as the series moved from in-season to summer. NBC has been double pumping originals, but two weeks and four episodes...

Turning a murder case into anything close to comedy is a tricky proposition, even when the victim is a fictional character. But over the course of two seasons, NBC’s “Trial and Error” has turned that challenge into a jumping-off point; it throws off distinctions of sitcom, parody, and TV legal proceedings and makes a story that’s wholly its own.
Where other shows might make the central attorney at the heart of each case the series’ beating heart, Josh Segal (Nicholas D’Agosto) is more of an idealistic conduit of relative calm around which the future of his law career and the town of East Peck exist in a constant state of flux. After successfully guiding his ragtag group of colleagues through the trial of Larry Henderson (John Lithgow), Josh gets an even bigger challenge: defend the beloved, extravagant Lavinia Peck-Foster (Kristin Chenoweth), who’s charged with killing her husband.

The truest crime? We still have to wait a few months for Trial & Error to return.
The NBC comedy, which pokes fun at true-crime docuseries, will return for Season 2 with back-to-back episodes on Thursday, July 19, starting at 9/8c.
As previously reported, Kristin Chenoweth (Pushing Daisies) joins the cast this season, playing eccentric heiress Lavinia Peck-Foster. The grande dame is on trial for murder after her husband Edgar’s body is found stuffed inside a suitcase in the back of her car. Lavinia hasn’t left her home for years, and she’s very fond of her hairless cat, Fluffy… but is she a killer?...
