Paris-based sales house Charades has acquired international sales rights to “In a Violent Nature,” the debut feature film from writer and director Chris Nash that is set to premiere in Sundance’s Midnight Section on Jan. 22.
Produced by Shudder under the streaming service’s Shudder Original banner, the film follows a vengeful undead monster as he methodically slaughters a group of campers in the wilderness after they remove a pendant from his resting grounds. Peter Kuplowsky and Shannon Hanmer are also producers on “In a Violent Nature,” which is set for release in 2024.
“‘In a Violent Nature’ reminded us of ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ and ‘Angst,’ but most of all, it’s the discovery of an incredibly talented director,” said Charades co-founders Pierre Mazars, Yohann Comte and Carole Baraton. “We are very grateful to be working with Shudder once again with whom we are building an incredible track record of genre films from ‘Revenge,...

The Killing Of Two Lovers,10.55pm, Film4, Monday, June 19
This mature debut from Robert Machoian, who has made short films for years, offers an intimate character study that grips as it goes. David (Clayne Crawford) is a man on the verge as he and his wife Nikki (Sepideh Moaffi) "take a break" from their relationship. Pressures - which are reflected in the groans and creaks from Peter Albrechtsen's ominous and unsettling sound design - that are magnified by the small town where they live and Derek (Chris Coy), who is vying for Nikki's affections. Crawford told us: "What the joy was, is, I saw the opportunities to play so many different sides of a human being, which you rarely get in a film." Machoian holds the mood carefully, inflecting with dark comedy while never losing the sense of danger associated with David's potential breakdown.

Director Robert Machoian follows up his well-received drama The Killing of Two Lovers with another low-budget but intriguing and original drama. In The Integrity of Joseph Chambers a man goes off hunting in the woods alone to seemingly prove something to his family, and himself, that he can ‘survive’ in the woods and be the ‘man’ of the house. It will come as no surprise that his irresponsibility leads him to a terrible situation.
First off, the movie looks fantastic. The cinematography is up there with the very best. I loved every shot of the woodland and the man walking around the woodland. I’m sure there’ll be some people who watch certain scenes and think that ‘nothing happens’. It’s just a guy walking through the woods,...

A city slicker moves his family to Alabama in search of a wholesome life and sets off for a solo hunting trip. It’s not going to go well
Robert Machoian is an indie film-maker drawn to a certain type of troubled American masculinity: the type that’s never so toxic as when weak or insecure. His previous drama The Killing of Two Lovers was about male anger, and this tense, suspenseful new film has similar ideas: a Dostoevskian parable set over a single day in remote woodland, with a slow-moving simplicity that belies its storytelling ingenuity and force, and again featuring Machoian’s longtime collaborator, actor-producer Clayne Crawford. This actually looks as if it could have been conceived in the 1970s, with a hint of Boorman’s Deliverance: right down to the Burt Reynolds moustache that the male lead smugly sculpts for himself one morning in front of the shaving mirror,...

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Armageddon Time (James Gray)
Armageddon Time is the sort of film usually invoked as a “portrait of the nation” or “state of the union address,” something taking the temperature of a country—most likely the United States—at a particular time in history. But it’s also a work that makes self-consciousness a virtue: its wonderful writer-director, James Gray, is informed up to his eyes about the virtues and pitfalls of films like these, and here makes something so idiosyncratically his own but that audiences and critics might still mislabel with one of those aforementioned ideas. – David K. (full review)

The Civil Dead (Clay Tatum)
For Clay, the man at the center of The Civil Dead, there isn’t much happening in life.

Robert Machoian’s The Integrity of Joseph Chambers is a meticulous, farcical character study of the titular anti-hero (repeat collaborator Clayne Crawford), who tries to live up to traditional masculine ideals by going on a solo hunting trip. Needless to say, Chambers is hilariously inept, so the trip—and his integrity—go south. Writer/Director Machoian’s rigorous aesthetic—a mix of precise, occasionally surreal sound design and long, naturalistic takes—immerses us in Joseph’s headspace. With Oscar Ignacio Jiménez’s camera as curious witness, we’re able to follow the character’s thought processes in excruciating detail: almost like Aliens observing man for the very first time.

Reaching a wider audience with 2020’s The Killing of Two Lovers, writer-director Robert Machoian and star Clayne Crawford are back with their follow-up, The Integrity of Joseph Chambers. Bullitt isn’t the only late 1960s film getting a reimagining for the modern era. Dennis Hopper’s Easy Rider, a landmark film that helped to usher in the New Hollywood movement that would define 1970s moviemaking, is the latest to be targeted for reboot potential.
Variety reports that a reimagining of the 1969 film, which starred Hopper, Peter Fonda, and a young Jack Nicholson, is being developed. As for what road this remake will travel down, the model being looked at is how Creed reinvigorated the Rocky franchise and a “bold” writer-director team is currently being sought after.
The rights to the original Columbia Pictures project are in the hands of a number of companies and individuals, including Maurice Fadida’s Kodiak Pictures, Defiant Studios’ Eric B. Fleischman, and the Jean Boulle Group, all of whom are backing this new take.

One of the most productive indie filmmakers working today, Robert Machoian has kept busy making features and shorts, sometimes with longtime collaborator Rodrigo Ojeda-Beck, and sometimes solo. This year Machoian has two films on the festival circuit, debuting his short The Last Days of August (co-directed with Ojeda-Beck) and his solo effort the tense thriller The Integrity of Joseph Chambers. We spoke to him about his new films including The Integrity of Joseph Chambers which premiered at Tribeca and has recently screened at regional festivals including New Jersey’s Montclair Film Festival.

We recently had the chance to speak to filmmaker Robert Machoian directly after the world premiere Tribeca Film Festival screening of his fifth feature film, The Integrity of Joseph Chambers. In that conversation we learned some exciting news — Machoian is currently writing what will loosely be a third chapter in a thematic trilogy that began with his masterwork, The Killing of Two Lovers (review). What could eventually be coined as a “characters in desperation” films this latest film would focus on another domestic situation. Unlike Machoian’s previous pair, this portrait is more equal footing — a husband and wife in a longterm relationship.…...

Kicking off this Thursday is one of the finest annual showcases in indie filmmaking, BAMcinemaFest, taking place at Bam Rose Cinemas. Among both well-curated highlights from recent festivals and world premieres, we’ve rounded up six essential features not to miss.
The festival also includes a number of notable new shorts, including Lynne Sachs’ Swerve (see our trailer premiere), Robert Machoian and Rodrigo Ojeda-Beck’s The Last Days of August, Rodney Evans’ Portal, and more. Check out our feature picks below and learn more here.
2nd Chance (Ramin Bahrani)
It’s an eerie image. Richard Davis stands out in a field, wearing a kevlar vest, and points a pistol into his belly. Then he pulls the trigger, skips back a bit, and checks his red-burned skin. Over the course of his life, he would do this—shoot himself—192 times, proving the efficacy of his life-saving device in the most visceral and operatic way possible.

If the apocalypse comes, we’re all screwed. Fancying himself a survivor with a desire to provide for his family should “things go south,” Joe (Clayne Crawford) gets up before the crack of dawn, leaving wife Tess (Jordana Brewster), swapping his BMW for neighbor Doug’s (Carl Kenedy) truck, and heading into a private wooded area. His adventures (and boredom) have their charms. He imagines he’s a baseball pitcher stepping up to the plate, he struggles to reach an overlook with all his gear on, and fantasizes about bagging a buck to take home, stick in the freezer, and feed his family in the event we’re blasted back to the Stone Age.

Continuing the brooding examination of men put to the test that they began in The Killing of Two Lovers, writer-director Robert Machoian and lead actor Clayne Crawford reteam on The Integrity of Joseph Chambers, a morality tale in which the threat to the protagonist’s family this time is the direct result of his own actions. The new film doesn’t match the tightly wound narrative complexity or power of its predecessor; nor does it escape the occasional feel of actor-y self-indulgence. But the artistic rigor of the undertaking remains striking, as does the invaluable contribution of Danish sound designer Peter Albrechtsen in sculpting the disquieting atmosphere.
No less important is the work of cinematographer Oscar Ignacio Jiménez, who made such an evocative setting of wintry Utah in The Killing of Two Lovers and does so again here with woodsy Alabama, captured in...

In “The Integrity of Joseph Chambers,” Clayne Crawford plays a middle-class insurance salesman who wakes up, shaves his mustache into something from the Chuck Norris/Burt Reynolds catalog of masculinity, kisses his wife Tess (Jordana Brewster) goodbye and sets out for an early morning hunting expedition. Say what you will about the Second Amendment, but Joseph Chambers has no business bearing arms, and this trip seems like a recipe for trouble.
Writer-director Robert Machoian’s follow-up to “The Killing of Two Lovers” unspools like a stripped-down, one-man “Deliverance”: No group of buddies on a weekend canoe trip. No dueling banjos. No hillbilly-inflicted sexual humiliation. Just a guy with a rifle in the woods, determined to prove something to the world about his capacity for self-reliance — a capacity that is very much in question with nearly every decision he makes. Just look at the way Joseph holds a rifle, carelessly...

In Robert Machoian’s The Integrity of Joseph Chambers, insurance salesman Joe (Clayne Crawford) is a kind of oxymoron: a prepper weekend warrior. If most survivalists are steadfastly in it for the long game, larding their basement bunkers with all sorts of durable foodstuffs, solar panel-driven batteries and cartons of Cipro, Joe jumps into the doomer mindset impulsively early one Saturday morning by deciding to hunt a deer. “We need to know how to do this stuff,” he says to his skeptical wife (Jordana Brewster) in their beautiful range-hooded kitchen, before heading out in his jeep, shotgun by his side. Joe’s […]

Tribeca is back and looking almost like it did before Covid hit the scene and upended film festivals around the world.
The 2022 edition will have indoor screenings, something that last year’s all-outdoor version eschewed. It will also offer up a steady stream of splashy premieres, performances, concerts and talks featuring A-listers such as Jennifer Lopez, as well as new offerings from the likes of Jon Hamm, Jessica Chastain, Ray Romano, Bryan Cranston and more. That’s the kind of sizzle that New York City could use as it tries to regain its stride after coronavirus knocked it for a loop.
But some pandemic-era innovations remain. Film lovers who still prefer to avoid crowds during Covid can access many of the movies and events digitally with the Tribeca At Home platform, a sign that going forward festivals are going to continue embracing a hybrid model.

Tribeca Festival, the event that wants to offer something for everyone, returns Wednesday with its sprawling collection of features and shorts, live music, TV, podcasts, games, and Ar/VR. The annual New York City-set fest has moved mostly back indoors this year, but will feature nods to 2021 like free outdoor screenings and an online edition, Tribeca At Home. A rich documentary slate tackles abortion, press freedom and the rise of social media. There’s a first-time award for environmental impact and a series of talks with Blackhouse Foundation centered on Poc storytelling.
“We’re an activist festival,” said Jane Rosenthal, co-founder with Robert De Niro and CEO of Tribeca Enterprises. “When you think back to how we founded the festival, we’ve always been political,” she added, a nod to the duo launching Tribeca after the September 11 terrorist attacks to buck up a physically and emotionally devastated neighborhood.

Exclusive: Visit Films has boarded writer-director Robert Machoian’s The Integrity Of Joseph Chambers and will be shopping the project to buyers in Cannes next week.
The film is set to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in June but buyers on the Croisette will be given a “sneak peek” of the title, according to Visit Films.
The project is a tense and brooding drama starring Clayne Crawford as an insurance salesman and family man Joseph Chambers. Wanting to acquire the skills to be able to take care of his family in case of an apocalypse, Joseph decides to go deer hunting by himself for the first time ever, despite his wife’s objections. Setting out into the mountains with a borrowed rifle, he roams the woods aimlessly in search for deer. His boredom is short-lived, however, when in the blink of an eye he goes through a traumatic experience.

World premieres from American indie filmmakers Robert Machoian, Andrew Dosunmu and Andrew Bujalski are just three filmmakers in the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival’s massive line-up. Coming off his masterwork The Killing of Two Lovers, Machoian’s U.S. Narrative Comp selected The Integrity of Joseph Chambers is a psychological drama about a special kind of deer hunting expedition – this stars Clayne Crawford, Jordana Brewster.
In the Spotlight Narrative section we find the gestating Beauty (a Netflix film) by Andrew Dosunmu which has Lena Waithe’s stamp all over it. To mark the release of the deluxe edition of their 2021 studio album Pressure Machine, the Killers have dropped a reimagined version of LP closer “The Getting By,” aptly titled “The Getting By II.”
The original version of the song is a pensive, melancholy ballad — but here, the band transforms the track into a raucous affair that, at it highest points, channels the arena rock Americana of Bruce Springsteen, a sound the Killers honed on Pressure Machine.

Our year-end coverage continues with a look at the best performances of 2021. Rather than divide categories into supporting or lead or by gender, we’ve written about our 35 favorites, period. Check our countdown below and start watching the ones you’ve missed here.
35. Katia Pascariu (Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn)
Katia Pascariu’s Emi, a teacher with a circulating home sex tape, is full of defiance. She walks around her Romanian homeland without pause, exasperated and disobedient. In the face of conflict she argues for her personal decisions, showing the sheer absurdity of the situation. Pascariu is the driving force behind Bad Luck Banging or Loony Poon, a comedy that leans on the effectiveness of her masked facial expressions and dialogue simmering with frustration. She’s the film’s only memorable face, synonymous with the farcical but realistic nature of her story, bringing to life a mishmash of ideas from writer-director Radu Jude.

Since short film Charlie and the Rabbit (2010), Robert Machoian (and frequent creative partner Rodrigo Ojeda-Beck) has been a mainstay with the annual pilgrimage in Park City. Breaking out big with his solo effort just two years back (the Neon released The Killing of Two Lovers), there’ll be a lot of hype surrounding this next project. Production on The Integrity of Joseph Chambers took place in December of 2020 in Alabama, and sees Machoian reteam with Clayne Crawford. He also landed the likes of Jordana Brewster, Michael Raymond-James and Jeffrey Dean Morgan to fill up a film that might make animals lovers cringe, but will likely devastate on some whole other level.…...

As the film industry attempts to regain its footing from a tumultuous year, it seems many of our most-anticipated (some long-delayed) titles will be arriving in the back half of 2021. But the midway point still has plenty to recommend. As we do each year, we’ve rounded up our favorite films thus far.
While year’s end will bring personal favorites from all our writers, think of the below entries (and honorable mentions) as a comprehensive rundown of what should be seen before heading forward. As a note: this feature is based solely on U.S. theatrical and digital releases from 2021, with the majority widely available, where listed.
We should also note a number of films that premiered on the festival circuit last year also had a qualifying award, therefore making them 2020 films by our standards—including I Carry You With Me, Minari, The Truffle Hunters, and The Father. Check out our picks below,...

Thriller sequel A Quiet Place Part II will look to replicate its success in international markets when it opens in 563 UK cinemas this weekend.
The film took $48.4m (£34.3m) across its opening three-day weekend in North America. This represented the best debut in the territory since the pandemic began; and, given social distancing measures, compares well with the $50.2m three-day opening of the first film in April 2018, which went on to gross $188m (£133.1m) across the US and Canada.

David (Clayne Crawford) is struggling to cope with the relationship break he and his wife Nikki (Sepideh Moaffi) are taking, not just because it means he spends less time with his kids but because they live in a fishbowl of a town where emotions are magnified, a tension that grows through the film, with David’s bottled up emotions threaten to blow as he...

The seeds of violence are planted by a humiliating marital breakdown in Robert Machoian’s thought-provoking thriller
Pain and rage pulse through this superbly made drama about marital breakdown and male humiliation. The tension is cranked up in its shocking first scene, which works cleverly in tandem with the title, but writer-director Robert Machoian is asking us: which two lovers does that mean, exactly? And what should we make of the very last scene? Does it show us acceptance, despair, or both?
David, played by Clayne Crawford, is a married guy in small-town Utah who had dreams of being a singer-songwriter but now does odd jobs; he is separated from his wife Nikki (Sepideh Moafi), a high-flying lawyer, and their four young children. The couple have apparently agreed that she should have the large family house because the children are happier there with her, so David gets to live like...

The global perspective of Australian filmmakers will be on show at next month’s Revelation Perth International Film Festival, which carries the theme of ‘Distant but Connected’.
Highlights include the world premiere of Antonio Traverso’s documentary The Best Battle, in which the Curtin University lecturer explores the political street art of Chile’s capital during the 2019/2020 estallido social (social blast) that marked the remembrance of 1973.
The documentary program will also feature the Australian premiere of Garth De Bruno Austin’s The Last Horns of Africa, an Australian/South African co-production that follows the efforts to protect rhinos in South Africa’s Kruger Park.
Kiwi director Gaysorn Thavat’s The Justice of Bunny King, starring Essie Davis, will have its Australian premiere at the festival. Shot in Auckland, Davis stars opposite Thomasin McKenzie, playing a mother-of-two with a sketchy past and the world against her.
