Today kicks off a mini-theme section of Book-a-Day; I read four 2009-2010 books from Fantagraphics over four days early in December, because I had them all digitally. They came in during the era when I was reviewing books seriously but getting many more things than I could fit into my Realms of Fantasy monthly column. The books otherwise have nothing in common, but some readers might wonder “why is this guy suddenly reading a bunch of old Fanta books?”
That’s why. It’s not a good reason, but it’s the one I have.
I come to Michael Kupperman’s Tales Designed to Thrizzle, Vol. 1 backwards. Kupperman was first known as a maker of humorous comics — this series, in particular — and has only recently moved into more serious work like All the Answers (which I read a couple of months ago).

Anyone who does a graphic novel about his father’s secrets and history has a long shadow to contend with. The closer that father was to WWII, the clearer the parallels. If the father was Jewish…even more so.
Now, a creator doesn’t have to engage with that at all: it’s probably best if they don’t, actually. But it’ll be there in the back of every reader’s head, just like any story with a whale will evoke Moby Dick and a guy wandering around Dublin Ulysses.
Michael Kupperman’s father Joel was a child prodigy, nationally famous at the age of five for appearing on the radio show Quiz Kids. He was shoved into it by a domineering mother, and basically lost his childhood to performing as a child genius. And, once he got out, he tried to ignore it for the rest of his life,...

As the focus on satirical media has sharpened in the aftermath of the Charlie Hebdo terror attacks, a former New York Times editorial comic wrote a scathing piece criticizing the paper of record for its “antiquated style.”
“Their nitpicking, antiquated style of editing got more oppressive until they were killing entire strips,” former Times editorial comic Michael Kupperman wrote Sunday.

“And it’s quite clear they were refusing to print them because they didn’t understand them. It was like being edited by hobbits,” he went on to write.

Artist Michael Kupperman says The New York Times rejected a cartoon he and writer David Rees wanted to include in Sunday's paper because its subject matter — how some men responded to the #YesAllWomen” hashtag — was “too sensitive.” Women began the hashtag to illustrate gender bias and sexual abuse after the Ucsb shooting, in which the gunman expressed a hatred of women. But some men took issue with it, by insisting not all men were to blame, or even venting hostility. In light of the untimely passing of beloved author David Rakoff, we thought we'd share a strange little nugget from his career as a reminder of what a truly delightful guy he was.
In 2008, Adult Swim ordered a pilot of an adaptation of the comic book "Snake 'N' Bacon" from Michael Kupperman, the genius artist/writer perhaps best known for the graphic novel Tales Designed To Thrizzle. They ultimately didn't pick up the series, but it's pretty excellent, and the whole thing is on Adult Swim's website.
Rakoff starred in a weird and wonderful little sketch called "Secrets of the Real District Attorney," alongside James Urbaniak of "The Venture Bros." Rakoff plays the district attorney in question, giving the titular crime-fighting duo, Shake and Bacon, a harsh talking-to.

The Comic Book Fan's Worst Nightmare! has been released by the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (Cbldf). The non-profit organisation launched the free digital mini-comic to highlight its current casework. Jeffrey Brown, Ming Doyle, Michael Kupperman and several other creators contributed to The Comic Book Fan's Worst Nightmare!, which is available to download from the Cbldf site or comiXology.
The comic recounts the organisation's work defending "Brandon X", an American citizen facing a jail term abroad for possessing horror and manga comics on his laptop. His case is expected to be heard in court next year, and could rack up legal costs of up to $$150,000 (£94,000). "What if the comics you took on a plane landed you in jail? Before I get to the box that came today, I have to thank Glenn Hauman, who was responsible for several big boxes of stuff that showed up semi-mysteriously yesterday, while I was at work. He was trying to get me started on rebuilding the collection that the flood destroyed, and it was one of the nicest things that anyone has ever done for me. (I haven’t really had a chance to see what’s there yet — I’ll probably have to wait until I have shelves again, and unload directly onto them to go through it all.) I’m not sure where all of it came from, so thanks to Glenn, and thanks to anyone else who was responsible.
But today a box came in from Midtown Comics, which used to be my local when I worked in the city, and which has been e-mailing me about their deals incessantly in recent weeks.

Confusion and distress were popular sentiments in the feed last night. News out of Libya about Muammar Gaddafi's collapsing government had everyone's attention, but the comics industry received it's own shocker with word that the Arizona-based retail chain Atomic Comics was closing.
Kevin Smith and Joe Quesada sent warm thoughts out to Atomic, which has always been known for in-store signing events and convention appearances. (You've probably seen their van at some point.) "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" reviews are still coming in, too. Check out a couple of those and a concern about "The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn" after the jump.

The cover of Mark Twain's Autobiography has been unveiled by Fantagraphics Books. Michael Kupperman's book tells the story of the Adventures of Tom Sawyer author's life between 1910 and 2010. Samuel Langhorne Clemens - better known by his pen name - died in 1910, but the graphic novel plays off his oft-misquoted phrase: "The report of my death was an exaggeration." "My name is Mark Twain, and I write these words to you in the good old days of August 2010," reads the book's blurb. "'What's that,' you say? 'Didn't you die a hundred (more)...

"Doctor Who" fans tweeted en masse yesterday to commemorate actress Elisabeth Sladen, who passed away this week at the age of 63. Writers and artists both noted the impact she had on them as Sarah-Jane Smith in the series, and I've retweeted the likes of Edgar Wright, Paul Cornell and Pia Guerra, who all remembered Sladen fondly.
The feed brought speculation about what's to come in 2011 as well. Bryan Lee O'Malley got a little snarky about "X-Men: First Class," Robert Kirkman expects great things from "The Walking Dead" in Season 2. Find out why and what Brian Michael Bendis had to say to "Internet babies" down below.

Elsewhere, Brian Michael Bendis revealed that he's contributing to the next generation of comic book movie critics, thanks to a screening of Richard Donner's "Superman." Check out where the Bendis household stands on that subject, as well as what Mark Millar recommends for DC's Flash movie.

R.I.P. Tony Curtis, 'Cowboys And Aliens' Reports, And 'The Social Network' In Today's Twitter Report
Actor Tony Curtis' death topped the trending news topics being discussed in the Twitter Report feed this morning. Edgar Wright, Wes Molebash and Jeff Parker shared their reactions, though one of them felt more connected to comedian Greg Giraldo whose passing also made headlines today.
On the movies front, Olivia Wilde triumphantly declared that she's finished with Jon Favreau's "Cowboys and Aliens." Favreau's been tweeting a bit as well, and it sounds like things are track for next year's release. Their notes, Tony Moore on "Jersey Shore" and Karl Kerschl's thoughts on "The Social Network" await you below.
I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is your Twitter Report for September 30, 2010.
Tony Curtis pt. 1: @edgarwright What a sad week in Hollywood. We just lost Danny Wilde, Sidney Falco, 'Junior' & Bernie Schwartz from the Bronx. Rest in peace, Tony Curtis.
-Edgar Wright, Director ("Scott Pilgrim vs. The World")

You may have months upon months left to wait before you actually see Neil Gaiman's "Doctor Who" episode, but he did share a picture from inside the Tardis today, and he looks like he's been having a good time.
In other posts, two major events have been trending in the feed over the last 24 hours. The new "Community" season premiered last night, and its use of Spider-Man didn't escape the watchful eyes of Dan Slott. The talk of the morning has been Stephen Colbert's testimony before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, Refugees, and Border Security on the issue of migrant farm work, though. Find out who you agree with about that, as well as what Mark Millar drinks to cure a hangover after the jump.

Tardis pt. 1: @neilhimself About to steal Tardis and explore space and time.

The Twitter Report's feed this morning included more of the standard "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" shout-outs that have become mainstays over the last week. Renée French had a great time watching Jason Statham in a beret, though, and we can only assume that means "The Expendables" was a transformative experience for her.
On the other side of the world, comics-maker and journalist Ted Rall updated his account from Afghanistan. You can keep up with what he's doing on his account, which is linked to below along with thoughts on what to do if a wizard curses your toilet, what Chris Burnham thinks of the Ground Zero mosque controversy and why Mitch Breitweiser was dreaming about President Obama.
I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is the Twitter Report for August 19, 2010.

Welcome to another edition of The Pull List. This edition covers my comic purchases for the first two weeks of August – which brings us bang up to date with this weeks release! Between less comics to buy and a busy schedule it’s been hard to keep up, hopefully this should now return to its regular fortnightly schedule
As usual if you’ve missed any of the previous entries you can check them out right here.
My Pull List
Booster Gold #35
Deadpool #1000
Justice League: Generation Lost #7
Shadowland: Blood on the Streets #1
Ultimate Avengers 3 #1
The Good
Booster Gold #35 opens this weeks pull list and yet again it doesn’t disappoint – in fact this issue left me with as big a smile on my face as Booster, Blue Beetle and Mister Miracle have on the very first page. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Giffen and DeMatteis know Booster,...

We'll be watching Edgar Wright's Twitter account very closely over the next 24 hours, as he's indicated that "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" may finally be completed today. With any luck, that means that he and his cast will be able to get a few days of rest in before they head to Comic-Con to make T-shirts.
Mark Waid, meanwhile, dropped a Twitter bomb last night. The "Kingdom Come" writer and Boom! Studios EiC declared that he's "stopped reading" superhero comics. He received a few responses from around the industry after that comment of course. Check out a few of them after the jump along with Gail Simone's hopes for "Red Dead Redemption" and a swank custom action figure by Jeff Lemire.
I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is your Twitter Report for July 9, 2010.
@edgarwright If all goes well. May finish the film today.

Now that the Michel Gondry's "Green Hornet" trailer is out in the open, the comics world is reacting, and I've included a quick sampling with opinions from Cully Hamner, Jeff Parker and the ever-quotable Brian Denham in the Report today.
While they were checking out Seth Rogen and Jay Chou, however, a few other faces in the crowd were watching SyFy's new "Phantom" re-imagining and "The Pixar Story" on CNBC. Click on past the jump to find out what everyone thought and see Fred Van Lente's Hercules casting recommendation, as well as what Bendis got away with this morning during the Avengers retreat.
I'm @brianwarmoth, and I believe I beat the Library of Congress to archiving these statements in the Twitter Report for June 22, 2010.
"Green Hornet" trailer pt. 1: @cully_hamner Hey, I'm Seth Rogen & I like to party, but my father died & left me a car & a manservant & Omglet'SDECIDE2BETHEGREENHORNET!

Andy Diggle's been doing some "Losers" work again, this time for a DVD commentary along with Vertigo collaborator Jock. Jimmy Palmiotti, meanwhile, gets to check out "Jonah Hex" tonight, according to his tweets. I'm guessing this week feels pretty good for all three of them.
For those of you saddened hear about the iPhone 4 problems yesterday, you may be encouraged to hear that both Brian Michael Bendis and Joshua Hale Fialkov managed to beat the system and get their orders placed. Find out more about their struggles, as well as who ate the last of Geoff Johns' Fruity Pebbles and what got Rick Rememder out of bed this morning.

Since it's "Kick-Ass" Week here on MTV Splash Page, I figured it would only be appropriate that the Twitter Report begin today with Jim Lee's R.S.V.P. to the film's Los Angeles premiere. Unfortunately, he had to send his regrets.
Meanwhile, I haven't seen any tweets yet this morning from Brian Michael Bendis, which hopefully doesn't mean that he came out on the losing end against a KFC Double Down last night. You can read what were potentially his last living thoughts after the jump, and it warmed my heart that they included the Twitter Report. Check out what Bendis' friends said of his undertaking below along with Robert Kirkman's tweet from the front lines of "Walking Dead" location scouting.
It's all in the Twitter Report for April 13th, 2010.

News that a new edition of Scrabble will legalize proper nouns caught many purists and writers off guard, and the comics community was not unaffected. Alex Irvine, for one, plans on sticking with tradition.
Elsewhere, Tim Seeley revealed one of his favorite actresses to headline a "Hack/Slash" movie. If you've seen "Warehouse 13," you'll what he's talking about. "Adventures of Dr. McNinja" creator Chris Hastings also got a surprise last night for a reported appearance by an image he made on "The Colbert Report." Check out his reaction along with James Robinson's favorite Lantern ring color and Christos Gage on whether Harvard or Marvel Comics is harder to get into.
It's all in the Twitter Report for April 7, 2010.
@alexirvine I will not be using proper nouns in my games of Scrabble, no matter what depravity Mattel approves.

Irish or not, comics tweeters sounded off about St. Patrick's Day today. Some love it. Some, like Warren Ellis, want it to leave them alone — and others downright loathe the holiday. And while we're on the subject of green, Geoff Johns got a look at Green Lantern's ring for the movie going into production right now.
Find out what he thought below, along with what Gail Simone wants to write if Marvel and DC ever do an Amalgam Comics line again, who's been working on a WWE comic and who the "Penny Arcade" guys threw a birthday party for.
It's all in the Twitter Report for March 17th, 2010.
