The first night of the 2022 Creative Arts Emmy Awards is taking place on Saturday, Sept. 3, and we’ll see where the Primetime ceremony could be heading based on the first wave of winners.
With an evening that features categories for animated program, reality host, documentaries and short form, we could get a strong sense of where some of the support lies for the main ceremony on Monday, Sept. 12.
There are significant history-making moments that can take place.
Barack Obama could become the second U.S. president to win an Emmy for outstanding narrator for Netflix’s “Our Great National Parks.” Dwight Eisenhower won in 1956, while still in office when he picked up the Governors Award “for his use and encouragement of television.”
If Obama wins, he’ll be halfway to Egot status after netting two Grammys for best spoken word album for “Dreams from My Father” (2006) and “The Audacity of...

Life Below Zero has been entertaining viewers on National Geographic for an astounding 17 seasons so far. One of the main reasons for the popularity of the documentary series is primary subject Sue Aikens, who lives by herself in a remote area of Alaska, almost 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle.
The 58-year-old grandmother possesses a remarkable capacity to put her experience into words.

“Every day I get up and I look in that mirror. I review what I did the day before, and if I need to make amends for something, I do it immediately. And if I did something really great, you’ll hear me go, ‘Yay, Sue! Go Sue!’” Aikens recounted as she and members of Life Below Zero’s production team joined Deadline’s Television: Documentary + Unscripted event.

Life Below Zero cinematographers Michael Cheeseman and Danny Day came in from the cold long enough to find out that they were nominated for more Emmys this year for their Nat Geo docuseries, which is now working on its latest season in remote Alaska.
Cheeseman and Day, already three-time Emmy winners for the show’s cinematography, joined on location with Emmy-nominated editor Jennifer Nelson to discuss one of Nat Geo’s most popular series during Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees all-day event. The network made its love known in January, when it renewed the NatGeo/BBC Studios docuseries and its spinoff Life Before Zero: Port Protection for more seasons and ordered a spinoff, Life Below Zero: Next Generation, with plans to air that beginning in 2021.
The cinematographers are currently in the midst of production. In total, that means schlepping about 60 totes, coolers and cases totaling more than 2,000 pounds of...

National Geographic’s “Life Below Zero” calls for director of photography Michael Cheeseman to always have a camera ready as he follows the cast and their struggles to live off the grid in remote Alaska.
Cheeseman is one of many cinematographers who work in the unpredictable world of nature. Others include “Deadliest Catch’s” David Reichert and “Serengeti’s” Richard Jones. Whether using a drone or a GoPro, these artisans are used to filming in extreme conditions and have learned to become resourceful when taking care of their gear miles from production houses.
Cheeseman, for example, often finds himself in subzero temperatures using equipment not built for such brutal weather.
“I’ll use my iPhone a lot for the GoPro, and it can die within 10 seconds. I have to put it right back in my jacket. The camera batteries can die too,” he says.
