What’s Good: The documentary illuminates the nuances of the “Devil Made Me Do It” case by offering a comprehensive exploration, featuring diverse viewpoints from pivotal figures such as Johnson, his family, and legal representatives. Through a meticulous depiction of events, the film provides valuable insights into the intricacies of the trial.
What’s Bad: While the documentary attempts to present a credible account, it falls short of maintaining journalistic integrity. The authenticity of the evidence, particularly the processed photographs and enhanced audio recordings, is questionable. The film leans heavily on horror tropes and sensationalism, prioritizing shock value over intellectual engagement and nuanced exploration of the case.

Netflix originals have always been the biggest draw for the streaming juggernaut, and their true crime documentary offerings have been so popular that they've been spoofed by both "Black Mirror," and the brilliant satirical mockumentary series "American Vandal." Released just in time for the Halloween season, the latest documentary, "The Devil on Trial," has been dominating the top 10 charts across the globe. The film is the latest from Peabody Award-winning and three-time BAFTA-nominated British writer, director, and producer, Chris Holt, and tackles the first and only time demonic possession was used as a defense in an American murder trial. Taking place in 1981, the trial made headlines as the "Devil Made Me Do It" case, as 19-year-old Arne Cheyenne Johnson claimed that he was not guilty in the murder of his landlord, Alan Bono, because he was possessed at the time of the killing.

This article contains spoilers for The Devil on Trial.
For most of its 80-minute runtime, Netflix‘s newest true crime doc, The Devil on Trial, is as sensational as the subject matter it’s covering, down to a “shock twist” at the end that might finally break this case of demonic possession wide open. Or at least it’s one of the many possible explanations this film flirts with while presenting its largely paint-by-the-numbers retelling of a story you’re likely already familiar with if you’ve watched The Conjuring movies about famous paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.
But here’s a quick summary: in 1980, the Warrens traveled to Brookfield, Connecticut to investigate a possible case of demonic possession at the home of the Glatzel family. When they decided David, the youngest of the Glatzel siblings, had indeed been possessed by the Devil, they turned to the Catholic Church for an exorcism.

A Netflix documentary recounts the 1980s trial of a 19-year-old murder suspect who claimed demonic possession
Here are the facts: on 16 February 1981, 19-year-old Arne Cheyenne Johnson, his sister Wanda, his fiancee Debbie Glatzel, her cousin Mary and Debbie’s employer/landlord Alan Bono all went to lunch at a bar in Brookfield, Connecticut. Over the course of the afternoon, Bono drank to the point of inebriated belligerence, and soon began to roughly handle young Mary. A visibly enraged Johnson intervened, tussled with Bono, drew a five-inch pocketknife and stabbed the man repeatedly. Bono succumbed to his wounds a few hours later, and Johnson was apprehended by the police two miles away from the scene of the crime.
That November, his trial became a media sensation when his legal representation pleaded innocence by cause of demonic possession, explaining that Johnson took on an unholy passenger while participating in an exorcism for...

Spanning nine films in total, “The Conjuring” franchise, including “The Nun II,” is as vast as it is complex.
The story that kicked off with supernatural investigating couple Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) and Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson) has since expanded into a series of “Conjuring” movies and spinoffs, all set at different points in a timeline that begins all the way back in the 1300s. The events in the three proper “Conjuring” films actually do occur in the order they were released, but the spinoffs and prequels, including “The Nun” and the “Annabelle” films, make the timeline much more complicated.
Here’s how to watch all the “Conjuring” movies in chronological order, all the way back to the Dark Ages.
The Nun (2018): 1300s, 1952, 1971 The Nun (Warner Bros.)
While the bulk of the film about the Nun (aka Valak), who first appears in “The Conjuring 2,” is set in 1952 Romania, a...

Back in August, the Netflix streaming service announced (via their Tudum site) that they would be releasing the documentary The Devil on Trial, which is based on the same true crime case that inspired the 2021 film The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, the third film in the Conjuring series. The Devil on Trial is set to start streaming on October 17th – and with just a couple weeks to go before we reach that date, a trailer for the documentary has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.
According to the Tudum listing, The Devil on Trial explores the first — and only — time “demonic possession” has officially been used as a defense in a US murder trial. Including firsthand accounts of alleged devil possession and a shocking murder, this extraordinary story forces reflection on our fear of the unknown.

Third franchise installment The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It came along in 2021, and like the other films in the franchise it was inspired by a true story of true evil.
The film was based on the first person in the US to use “the devil made me do it” in a murder defense, and an upcoming Netflix documentary explores that true story this Halloween.
Netflix’s The Devil on Trial premieres on October 17, 2023.

Netflix’s The Devil on Trial documentary examines the first murder trial in the United States to use the devil made me do it as a defense. The demonic possession trial took place in 1981, and although it’s been re-imagined for multiple films, many of the people with firsthand knowledge of the case have never been interviewed as a part of a documentary until now.
Teenager Arne Cheyenne Johnson claimed to have been controlled by demonic forces when he brutally murdered his landlord, Alan Bono. Johnson’s case had a link to Ed and Lorraine Warren, the paranormal investigators whose work was the basis for The Conjuring and who examined the original Amityville haunting. In the end, the jury didn’t accept the demonic possession defense, and Arne Cheyenne Johnson was convicted of first-degree manslaughter.

From "Saw" and "Halloween" to "Scream" and "Paranormal Activity," so many of our favorite horror films have gone on to become huge franchises with multiple sequel films. However, none top the success of "The Conjuring." Since launching in 2013, "The Conjuring" movies have made over two billion dollars at the box office, making it the highest-grossing horror franchise of all time. A decade after it first began, the franchise is still going strong today. The latest film in "The Conjuring" cinematic universe, "The Nun 2," is set to hit theaters on Friday, Sept. 8.
"The Nun" is just one of several spin-off franchises that have come out of "The Conjuring." The others are the "Anabelle" franchise and "The Curse of La Llorona." In total, there are nine films that are part of this shared universe. Since they all take place in different locations around the world and at different time periods, it...

With the new announcement that HBO Max has simply been renamed Max, another bombshell just dropped for horror fans during today's WB Discovery panel. "The Conjuring" universe is continuing to expand with its first foray into television. While not much was said about what direction the new paranormal horror series could go in, the show is in active development with Peter Safran and James Wan on board as producers. The new series does plan to "continue the story established in the feature films."
Currently, there are seven films within "The Conjuring" universe that have grossed over two billion at the global box office, so it's not surprising at all that a series is in the works to further explore the frightening investigations of the Warrens. While nothing was mentioned about the upcoming "It" prequel series, "Welcome to Derry," it seems like Max is more than willing to double down on the horror genre,...

If there's something strange in your neighborhood, who ya gonna call? Well, most of the Gen Z Ghostbusters aren't old enough to have a driver's license just yet, so Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) will have to do in a pinch. The married paranormal investigators have been bustin' demons for a full 10 years as of 2023 (what even is time?), but may yet hang up their crosses after the currently developing "The Conjuring 4."
After teaming up with Leigh Whannell to create "Saw" and "Insidious," James Wan helped restore the haunted house horror sub-genre to its creaky and moaning glory with "The Conjuring." Much to everyone's surprise, the 2013 thriller wound up birthing one of the most lucrative shared universes not to involve superpowers (assuming Lorraine's clairvoyant abilities and Ed's uncanny Elvis impersonation don't count). Along with spinoffs centered on supernaturally possessed dolls, vengeful Latin-American spirits, and demons who...

The biggest shame of the “Devil Made Me Do It Case” is that Satan, and his legion of 43 fellow body-squatters, never got to take the stand. Given the voices we hear in Discovery+’s new Shock Docs: The Devil Made Me Do It, they might have made quite the impression on the otherwise largely indifferent court. For all the evil, Mr. Burns-style, laughter which emanates from the throat of the young possessed boy, a demon might have given the case the one thing it needed most: a hostile witness.
“I’ve always believed in the devil,” we hear again and again from survivors, eyewitnesses, investigating officers, even skeptics. But the Catholic Church never even looked at the evidence Ed and Lorraine Warren pounced on. Local priests from St. Joseph’s parish didn’t wait for Vatican blessings to perform several “lesser exorcisms” on such ungodly goings-on. Everyone preached to the choir.

Though the latest Conjuring movie, The Devil Made Me Do It, is named after the Arne Johnson murder case, whereby a young man claimed the crime he committed was caused by demonic possession, there’s an entirely new subplot that carries the body of the new film.
After the supposedly possessed Arne Johnson is held in custody awaiting trial for the murder of his girlfriend’s landlord, paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) are on a mission to discover how and why these possessions took place. While the Johnson case is based on real events, the reasons behind the possession, as posed within The Devil Made Me Do It, are completely fictional.

It takes less than 5 minutes for The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, the third franchise installment and eighth Conjuring Universe film, to jump full force into a vicious demonic possession scene involving a contorting young boy and a few obvious nods to The Exorcist. Fighting the forces of evil again, looking more withered and worn from their many encounters with malevolent spirits, are Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga). The loving staples of The Conjuring films find themselves in new territory with their latest case.

Ed is hurt, Lorraine is affected by a vision, and Arne Johnson (Ruairi O'Conner), the boyfriend of David's older sister Debbie (Sarah Catherine Hook), demands that the entity "take me instead." Chicago – The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is our third official, not-counting-the-spinoffs foray into the “based on true events” shenanigans of Ed and Lorraine Warren, and it’s starting to show. If you’re a tea drinker and equally as frugal as I am, you have reused a tea bag to make a second (sometimes even a third) cup of tea.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
The first cup will always be the strongest with the second cup still having a potent flavor, you just have to let it steep longer than the first cup. Everyone knows that by the time you get to making a third cup out of the same tea bag, the flavor infused in the water is a pale ghost of what it once was, tasting like a flat La Croix. The name of this watered-down flavor is called The Conjuring 3, but once you taste it you...

As with the previous Conjuring movies, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is based around a case investigated by real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. While the extended Conjuring universe, which includes the Annabelle movies, The Nun and The Curse of La Llorona, is pure fiction, the main Conjuring films stick with the ‘based on real events’ hook – but how much of the latest movie is actually based on the facts and how much is artistic license?
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is slightly different to the first two Conjuring films in that the key events in the case happen at the very start of the movie, with the main bulk of the film concerning a background investigation that isn’t based on the real case. The real case is therefore the anchor and the bookends.

Set in 1981, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It centers around the real case of Arne Johnson, a young man who murdered his landlord and claimed that he was possessed at the time. While this case, which the Warrens did have involvement with, is the framing device of the story, the meat of it, where the Warrens strive to understand what the demon wants and where it comes from, is fictional and has a neat tie-in to the wider Conjuring universe.
We discover that an occultist has summoned the demon using witches totems in order to gain great power. This occultist is revealed to be the adopted daughter of retired priest Father Kastner (John Noble). Kastner was instrumental in bringing down a cult called The Disciples of the Ram, an endeavor he worked on for almost a decade.

After a five-year hiatus that felt much, much longer than that, the “Conjuring” franchise is back with its third main-series movie, “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.” While stars Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson are back as Lorraine and Ed Warren, this time we’ve got a new director, Michael Chaves, who takes over from James Wan.
As is usually the case with these movies and the franchise spinoffs, “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” is based on a true story. The horror flick follows the notorious 1981 murder trial of 19-year-old Arne Johnson, who claimed he stabbed his landlord to death while under the influence of a demonic force.
The story goes that, after a young boy shows signs of demon possession, the Warrens get called in to do an exorcism — but Arne interferes, and begs the demon or demons to leave the boy and possess him instead.

“The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It” will be haunting theaters and HBO Max starting Friday, June 4. After detouring into spinoffs, the franchise has returned its focus to demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren and another of their bizarre cases.
The new film follows the notorious 1981 murder trial of 19-year-old Arne Johnson, who claimed he stabbed his landlord to death while under the influence of a demonic force. The case came amid a nearly 15-year long pop culture fascination with the occult fueled by films like “Rosemary’s Baby” and “The Exorcist,” and coincided with the rise of multiple conspiracy theories collectively known as the 1980s satanic panic.
The story begins in the summer of 1979 in Brookfield, Connecticut, a small suburban town that hadn’t seen one murder in its 193 year history. The family of Johnson’s girlfriend, Deborah Glatzel, temporarily relocated to an old house at the edge of...

For this third entry in the Conjuring series, Lorraine and Ed Warren have returned to take on one of the most infamous demonic cases of the 1980s for The Devil Made Me Do It, based on the real-life murder trial of Arne Johnson that took place in Connecticut in 1981. At the helm of this installment in the Conjuring franchise is Michael Chaves (The Curse of La Llorona), with James Wan handing over the directorial reins this time around. And while The Devil Made Me Do It doesn’t quite hit the same highs as its predecessors did (The Conjuring 2 still remains my favorite entry in the series), The Devil Made Me Do It still has a few creepy tricks up its sleeves, and seeing Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson reunited once again for this latest sequel was a welcome sight as well, as they are great as usual.

After five years, “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” — the third installment in the flagship storyline, which now includes multiple spinoff franchises — returns to the “based on a true case” framework that launched this horror universe.
With neither flying furniture nor a residential incantation, evil takes on a more tangible form this time. It’s also the first film in the trilogy, featuring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as real-life demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren, not directed by series mastermind James Wan. At the helm this time is Michael Chaves, who previously directed the deservedly maligned “The Curse of La Llorona,” another installment of the “Conjuring” saga. Chaves gets a far superior showcase for his filmmaking abilities in the genre, from the screenplay by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (“The Conjuring 2”) to Wilson and Farmiga’s lived-in charm and gravitas as their religiously passionate characters.

“Based on a true story” is the hook that the Conjuring universe was built on. A franchise where the main entries feature events from the case files of real life paranormal investigating couple Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), it’s a good gimmick that has served the series well so far – if you want to believe the Perron family were haunted by a ghost witch and that there was a poltergeist in North London in the 1970s, have at it. If not, you’ve still got a fun film with two likable leads and plenty of good jumps.

It’s inspired by the true story of Arne Johnson, […]

It’s the eighth part in the Conjuring universe, the third starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren, yet director Michael Chaves says The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is going to be “very different” from the rest of the franchise.
After revealing the first 11 minutes of the film to journalists, Chaves, who also made Conjuring universe movie The Curse of La LLorona, explains that the intention for the third installment of the main franchise was always to “blow the doors off the haunted house experience and take the Warrens out into the world,” but this particular story comes with a unique set of perils not yet tackled within the Conjuring universe.

Preview: Director Michael Chaves on What Fans Can Expect from The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It
Last week, Daily Dead joined in with a group of other journalists to get an early look at The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, which is being helmed by Michael Chaves (The Curse of La Llorona). For this third film in the franchise, Chaves has taken over directorial duties from James Wan, and during the preview event, he discussed with us how The Devil Made Me Do It will set itself apart from the other Conjuring films that have preceded it.
“The big idea was that we've seen the Warrens go on these adventures before and there's the expectation that they're going to face a demon,” Chaves explained. “They're going to exorcise that demon by the end of the movie, and from the very beginning we were like, ‘Let's just turn that whole idea on its head. Let's start with the thing that you think the movie is...

Third film in the main “Conjuring” series stars Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson and opens June 4
Lorraine and Ed Warren are back for the third film in the main “The Conjuring” series, “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It,” and this time they’re testifying about the existence of Satan and working to investigate a grisly murder committed in broad daylight.
Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson are back in “The Devil Made Me Do It,” which is based on real case files and involves an actual murder case about a young man in 1981 named Arne Johnson who for the first time in a court of law claimed demonic possession as a defense.
“The court accepts the existence of God every time a witness swears to tell the truth,” Patrick Wilson says in the trailer. “I think it’s about time they accept the existence of the Devil.”
