Aarya is a crime-thriller drama based on the Dutch drama series ‘Penoza‘. Sushmita Sen plays Aarya Sareen, an independent woman who seeks to protect her family and becomes a mafia gang to take revenge for her husband’s murder. Earlier, the show has been nominated for International Emmy Awards for best Drama series.
Having said so, the first thing that comes to my mind is about the producers / platform’s release strategy. They seem to be caught between being periodic or one-timer. I mean, most of the (Indian) web series that we see are released in one go (called a season). Fair enough, for, if the audience likes the content, they binge watch and feel satisfied. On the other hand there are these TV shows that release episodes on a daily/weekly basis. Similarly, we have seen quite a few international web series content release their episodes on a weekly basis.

The Mishra's are back. Season 2 of the incredible Gullak by Tvf that streamed on SonyLIV is back and how! Gullak 2 is all set to premiere on SonyLIV from 15th January 2021.
Gullak 2 review
Things have somewhat changed in the Mishraji’s household. Elder son Annu (Vaibhav Raj Gupta) has unfortunately not been able to score at the Staff Selection Commission examination and Aman (Harsh Yar) is facing his board exams.
The rest is however the same in these five episodes of small little realistic slice of life gems.
Pati dev aka Husbandji Santosh (Jameel Khan) is the same honest clerk in the electricity department. Dharam Patni aka biwi matlab wife Shanti (Geetanjali Kulkarni) is making that chutney on that seel baata (grinding stone – for the English medium fellas).
These five kisse not kahani written by Durgesh Singh and helmed by Palash Vaswani are straight out of middle-class life, especially from the small town.

Hollywood agency ICM Partners has come on board Rohena Gera’s festival favorite “Sir” and will represent it for sales in Anglophone markets U.S., U.K. and Australia, among other territories. The Hollywood agency will also serve as the film’s awards season lobbyist.
A delicately observed study of class differences in Indian society, “Sir” stars Tillotama Shome as a domestic live-in help with Vivek Gomber, a man from a wealthy family who seems to have it all, but is somewhat lost. As their worlds collide and the two individuals connect, the barriers between them seem only more insurmountable.
The cast also includes Divya Seth Shah, Geetanjali Kulkarni, Bhagyashree Pandit, Anupriya Goenka and Bachan Pachera.
“We have a very intimate yet hierarchical relationship with the people who work in our homes,” Gera said. “I wanted to explore that without being preachy, and a love story allowed me to do that.

NetflixThe show features an ensemble cast of varying ages whose intersecting love stories play out with the background of Lucknow University and later the Taj Mahal.Saraswati DatarWhat is it about love that inspires and confounds people in equal measure? Why does it inspire sonnets and grand gestures but act like a slippery eel, trickling away from the gaps between two people who are bound by it? Is love mutually exclusive to sex, is it friendship, is it companionship or a spiritual journey where two people, any two people, become the best versions of themselves? These are some of the questions that a promising little series Taj Mahal 1989, now streaming on Netflix, asks its viewers. Co-produced by Tipping Point productions and Flying Saucer, the series is set in Lucknow and Agra in 1989 when ‘bae’ was a term of familiarity suffixed to sentences, like Da/di or machan in Tamil.

?Aman, Anand, Santosh, and Shanti, aa gaye hai machane kranti,? It was nothing short of a laugh-riot as the Mishras took over Lucknow for the launch of SonyLIV?s new Hindi original Gullak. Jameel Khan, Geetanjali Kulkarni, Sunita Rajwar and Vaibhav Raj Gupta along with Uday Sodhi, Business Head Digital, Sony Pictures Networks India were present in the city to talk about the show that goes live on the platform.
Narrated from the perspective of a Gullak (piggy bank), the show explores the imperfect relationships and aspirations of the Mishra family and uses their anecdotes to offer an unconventional style of storytelling.
Written by Nikhil Vijay, Gullak is set against the backdrop of North India and narrates the story of a small family struggling to save up for a better future. Daily hassles and imperfections are routine for the Mishras who manage to stick together and sail through all that comes their way.

When Indian independent cinema deals with intercaste relationships or the issues involving employers and their servants, it usually produces dark, gritty and high-caliber dramas. However, “Sir”, the feature debut of director and screenwriter Rohena Gera, is crafted in a completely different style. It doesn’t fall into the same category as critically acclaimed “Fandry” by Nagraj Mangule or classic like “Paar” by Goutam Ghose, but this is not a flaw. Quite the opposite, the female director’s approach is pleasurably refreshing.
“Sir” is screening at London Indian Film Festival
Before “Sir”, Gera came out with a witty documentary “What’s Love Got to Do with It”, which was an interesting portrayal of a young privileged generation of Indians, exploring their expectations about love and marriage. The film also raised the issue of family and gender roles that prevail in society despite the changing lifestyles. “Sir” explores those further, but in a fictionized manner.

“Court”, the debut feature of Chaitanya Tamhane, is a poignant and bitter portrayal of institutional dysfunction. Made in a gritty, documentary-like style, the movie leaves a sense of helplessness and terror. The story unfolds unhurriedly, told with long, steady shots and wide angles, without a blink of an eye exposing the inanities of Indian judiciary to lay a charge against the system, though Tamhane defines „justice” as something much broader than only a set of codified rules, stretching its meaning to society’s welfare and stark inequalities. He uses a disguise of a court drama to narrate the tale that is nothing like a generic courtroom crowd pleaser, built of displays of lambent word-fencing and twist-and-turns of evidence jugglery.
Narayan Kamble (Vira Sathidar), a humble-looking, white-haired and bearded, sixty-a few years old lok shahir, folk singer, or more accurately a people’s poet, is accused of abetting...

Shubhashish Bhutiani’s dreamy comedy-drama about a businessman embarking on a final journey with his father is smart, spellbinding and achingly relatable
This beautifully rendered Indian arthouse film, the debut of young director Shubhashish Bhutiani, enacts a subtle family comedy-drama that anyone who has spent time with an ageing parent could relate to easily.
Middle-class businessman Rajiv (Adil Hussain) lives with his wife Laila (Geetanjali Kulkarni), grownup daughter Sunita (Palomi Ghosh) and elderly father Daya (the Falstaffian Lalit Behl), a curmudgeonly former schoolteacher with whom Daya has, at best, a rocky, adversarial relationship.

“Every appreciation coming our way matters. The fact that this is our first venture, being awarded the best film across the globe and nationally, means a lot to us. Having won the best special mention awards at the National awards, obviously made us we happy and now Nyiff has multiplied to that making us ecstatic. Nyiff been known to support films about India and Indian diaspora since 2001, has been actively trying to educate America and Americans about India and its people. To think our film represented our country internationally over again and won, makes us feel very proud,” enthused Sanjay Bhutiani, the producer...

Mukti Bhawan
Starring Lalit Behl, Adil Hussain, Geetanjali Kulkarni, Navninda Behl.
Written & Directed by Shubhashish Bhutiani
24 is too young to think about death, let alone make a melancholic meditative movie on mortality. Debutant Shubhashish Bhutiani’s Mukti Bhawan sweeps us into a world where death is not the end but a release into a realm of imperishable freedom.
Or Moksha, if you will.
Crafted with the care of a jeweller working on a specially intricate piece, the director brings to life the most precious and vital truth about death. As he takes us, along with his two protagonists, on a journey to the holy city of death Varanasi, the film somewhere along its resplendent route to salvation, becomes a treatise on life as defined by the inevitability of death.
Like all the most important directors of the world from Satyajit Ray to Ritesh Batra, Bhutani has a keen eye for detail.

Here’s an interesting story about how Palomi Ghosh landed her part in Mukti Bhawan! When Palomi mustered courage to sing for A R Rahman in front of a packed audience at Iffi Goa, she didn’t know she was about to sign a film thanks to the courage she showed, “For someone who passed her university years in North Carolina State University singing covers of A R Rahman songs I never thought I would ever get the chance to be in the same room as the God himself. But I couldn’t let the chance of speaking with him, albeit in a jam-packed auditorium. So I asked him ‘What would it take to work with him?’ he responded in his quiet voice, ‘surprise me!’, so I tried. I sang a Konkani-jazz number from my film Nachom-ia Kumpasar (Palomi bagged the special jury, National Award for the film) and he promptly said ‘Taken!

While news of some big studios shutting shop for local productions may be creating frown lines for the film industry, there’s a completely different breed of young Indie filmmakers who seem to have cracked a different code to circumvent these cash crunches. In their own search and struggle to work against the budgeting odds involved in movie-making, these young guns are redefining the Indian film business like never before. And one of the most promising names from this growing tribe is the 25-year-old National Award winning director Shubhashish Bhutiani, whose debut feature film ‘Mukti Bhawan’ (‘Hotel Salvation’) is all set for a world premiere at the upcoming International Venice Film Festival. Interestingly though this Indie film is rooted in India and at its core a story which is extremely universal in appeal.
