In 2009 a gelding trained and owned by a couple of cowboys from New Mexico won the Kentucky Derby running at 50-1 odds. Mine That Bird hadn’t won a single race in the United States before that and only qualified to run the Derby because of the stakes he’d won in Canada. Not only that, Mine That Bird was small and slightly “crooked up front,” as his trainer, Chip Wooley (Skeet Ulrich) says when he first sees him. He’s skeptical at first when he flies up to Canada to see him and advises his boss/friend Mark Allen (Christian Kane) to pass on him. But when he sees Mine That Bird whizz around the track he decides they need to buy him. Asking price, half a million. The Canadians who owned him had paid only $9,500 for him.

And just like that, it's over. A little over two minutes after hitting the track at Churchill Downs, Animal Kingdom, ridden by John Velazquez, beat 18 other horse-and-jockey pairs to snag the top prize in the 137th running of the Kentucky Derby.
The official top four finishers were Animal Kingdom followed closely by Nehro, the well-named Mucho Macho Man and Shackleford.
Dialed In had been favored in early betting after Uncle Mo was forced to back out of the race after his trainers decided the horse had not sufficiently recovered from a gastrointestinal infection. Also closely watched ahead of race time: Twice the Appeal, ridden by Calvin Borel, winner of the last two Kentucky Derbies.
One horse, Archarcharch, suffered an injury during the race.
Female jockey Rosie Napravnik, riding Pants on Fire, also found herself the subject of pre-race buzz. But, alas, 2011 wasn't the year for the Derby's first winning female jockey.

Super Saver came from the middle of the pack to win a muddy Kentucky Derby on Saturday (May 1) -- and made a guy named Glen Fullerton a whole bunch of money.
Fullerton, of Houston, Texas, was the winner of a "Derby DreamBet" sweepstakes sponsored by Churchill Downs Inc. (where the race is run) and CNBC. His name was drawn from more than 67,000 entries to place a $100,000 bet on any of the horses in the field to win. He chose Super Saver.
The horse went off at 7-to-1 odds, and as Super Saver and jockey Calvin Borel crossed the finish line, NBC's cameras captured Fullerton in full-on ecstasy. You'd probably do the same thing if you had just made $900,000.
The win for Super Saver was trainer Todd Pletcher's first in 25 tries at the Kentucky Derby, while Borel won his third Derby in the last four years.
