Director Debra Granik's film "Winter's Bone" won big last month at the Sundance Film Festival. Not only did the independent movie secure distribution with Roadside Attractions, it also was awarded the dramatic competition grand jury prize. The ensemble cast sat down with MakingOf to share how they got involved with the project, what filming in the Ozarks was like and how they each connected with Granik and their characters.
The film, which tells the story of an Ozark Mountain girl who hunts down her missing father in hopes of saving their home, was adapted from the Daniel Woodrell novel of the same name. The cast includes Jennifer Lawrence, Dale Dickey, Lauren Sweetser, John Hawkes, Kevin Breznahan, Tate Taylor, Casey MacLaren, Cody Brown and Charlotte Lucas.

Contrary to the subject matter of their film, the cast of "Winter's Bone" were all smiles at the Sundance premiere of the film at the Eccles Theater in Park City. Joining director Debra Granik on the red carpet were the film's stars Jennifer Lawrence, Dale Dickey, John Hawkes, Kevin Breznahan, Casey Maclaren and Lauren Sweester. Granik has an eye for talent -- her last film, "Down to the Bone," provided a breakout role for Vera Farmiga -- so these names and faces are worth remembering.
"Winter's Bone" tells the story of Ree Dolly, a young woman caring for her siblings and ailing mother in the Ozarks. When Ree's father is arrested for cooking meth, he puts the family home up for bail and then flees the authorities.
