In her 1965 essay “The Imagination of Disaster,” Susan Sontag wrote that the allure of “exotic dangerous situations” came down to the way they “normalize what is psychologically unbearable.” It would have been intriguing to get Sontag’s take on “The Unthinkable,” , and doesn’t so much delight in world-ending events as it recognizes that surviving them never ensures a happy ending. Getting through the ordeal is only half the battle.
But what a battle: In this fast-paced adventure from Swedish director Victor Danell, an unsuspecting public contends with toxic rain that renders its victims into puddles of dementia who slam their cars into epic pileups as a mystery international threat invades from the skies. Like Jeremy Saulnier’s “Green Room,” the movie oscillates from stark survival drama to outright war movie and back again, speeding through taut, claustrophobic shootouts and exploding helicopters even as it shoehorns the spectacle into a...

If there were Oscars for chutzpah, “The Unthinkable” would be a cinch: The first feature for a Swedish collective who’ve been making short films together since childhood, it manages a sprawling story with considerable spectacular action to technically commanding effect on a relatively miniscule, partly Kickstarter-funded budget.
Yet Crazy Pictures’ disaster movie/thriller/romance/dysfunctional family drama is more laudable for its ambitious resourcefulness on limited means than for actual achievement or impact. Despite some strikingly accomplished elements, the awkward whole never quite gels, sewn-together parts from “Red Dawn,” “Independence Day,” et al., failing to cohere amid major logic gaps, not to mention lead characters more off-putting than interesting.
At once impressive and misconceived, this is truly an odd duck whose ungainliness may explain why the U.S. took so long to catch up with a film that’s launched in numerous other territories since its 2018 home-turf premiere.

"We never thought it would happen to us." Three years later, and they still didn't think it would happen! Ha. Magnolia Pictures has debuted a new US trailer for the US release of the Swedish disaster-thriller titled The Unthinkable. All the networks are down, and before anyone realizes what's behind the collapse, a series of unexplained attacks take place around the country. Alex returns to his childhood village, and as old feelings come back to the surface, more mysterious attacks plunge Sweden into chaos & confusion. The Unthinkable is "about time running out, and protecting what matters most." Starring Christoffer Nordenrot, Lisa Henni, Jesper Barkselius, Pia Halvorsen, and Magnus Sundberg. No idea why this...

The film was helmed by the filmmakers who are part of the Crazy Pictures collective: Hannes Krantz, Albin Pettersson, Olle Tholén, Rasmus Råsmark and Victor Danell. Nordenrot co-wrote the script with Danell, whose 2015 short “Gilla” played at Tribeca.

A new trailer has been released for the Swedish, sci-fi film Den Blomstertid Nu Kommer. In English, the film is simply called The Unthinkable. This title was funded through a Kickstarter campaign and this was Sweden's biggest crowd funded feature, to date. Within the film, Alex returns to his childhood home. He hopes to reconcile with his father, in the midst of a mysterious attack. This title stars: Christoffer Nordenrot ("Blue Eyes"), Lisa Henni, Jesper Barkselius and Pia Halvorsen. The first, full length trailer is hosted here. The trailer shows a series of explosions, in the distance. Alex tries to orient himself, during the attack. Meanwhile, much of Sweden is burning, while security forces prepare to strike back. But, who is behind the chaos? The Unthinkable will be released, in Sweden, this Summer. This title is slated for a June 22nd release, in theatres. Hopefully, The Unthinkable will show in more territories,...

Okay, Quiet Earthers, I know you're going to fall in love with this trailer as much as I did. It's for a new apocalyptic alien invasion film from Sweden called a new sci-fi film from Sweden titled Den Blomstertid Nu Kommer(or "Now the time of Blossoming Arrives" translated).
The gritty flick comes from director Victor Danell and was originally a crowed funded picture on some level though you wouldn't know it.
Synopsis:
At the same time as Sweden is shocked by a mysterious attack, Alex is forced back to his childhood home. There he must reconcile with his father and his youth love, Anna, while they struggle to survive.
The film stars Christoffer Nordenrot, Lisa Henni, Jesper Barkselius, Pia Halvorsen, and Magnus Sundberg.

"We never thought it would happen to us." Whoa. This looks cool. A full-length official trailer has debuted for a new sci-fi film from Sweden titled Den Blomstertid Nu Kommer, which translates directly to Now the time of blossoming arrives. The film is called The Unthinkable in English, and is about a mysterious attack on Sweden. This film, from director Victor Danell, was crowd-funded originally but has a huge big-budget Hollywood look to it, especially with some of the action sequences seen in this full trailer. Starring Christoffer Nordenrot, Lisa Henni, Jesper Barkselius, Pia Halvorsen, and Magnus Sundberg. I don't know what exactly is going on, possibly aliens or something else, but it looks crazy good. Watch below. Here's the full trailer (+ teaser trailer) for Victor Danell's Den blomstertid nu kommer, found on Vimeo: At the same time as Sweden is shocked by a mysterious attack, Alex is forced back to his childhood home.

A cabin in the woods, a group of kids, and something in the basement. Given the idea that the film is based on Swedish folklore that tells the legend of almost-human creatures living underground, it’s not hard to realise that Wither is an homage to Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead. In fact this is such a blatant “homage” it could almost be Evil Dead 4 by any other name!
Ida and Albin are thrilled to be setting off for a fun holiday with their friends to a remote cabin in the vast Nordic woodlands. But their carefree weekend comes unhinged when one of them accidentally unleashes a mysterious and murderous creature trapped in the basement. Worse, under the floorboards lurks an evil from Sweden’s dark past.

Easy Money is a smart, affecting, slow burn of a movie, a spectacular example of Nordic noir. The sequel suffers by comparison, though. I’m “biast” (pro): have a soft spot for Joel Kinnaman
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
If you’ve enjoyed the new remake of RoboCop — or even if you didn’t — you can’t go wrong by checking out newly minted Hollywood leading man Joel Kinnaman in a fantastic film made on his home turf of Sweden. (Were you fooled by Kinnaman’s flawless American accent? He’s not American.) Easy Money, from 2010, had only a small release in North America in 2012, unsurprising given the general lack of interest by U.S. audiences in reading subtitles. Its similarly limited release in the U.K. in 2013 is surprising, however, because...

★★★☆☆ It's not very often that you see a new UK release that's already had a sequel made and circulated in its native country. Knowing that this is part one does cause concern that it will have an open-ended finale, but it's also encouraging to know that this initial offering was evidently good enough to have earned a second bite of the cherry. As such, Daniel Espinosa's Easy Money (Snabba cash, 2010) doesn't disappoint. Joel Kinnaman plays Johan Westlund, a charismatic young student who leads a double life, convincing his bourgeois friends that he is from a privileged background, attracting the interest of the beautiful Sophie (Lisa Henni).

Director: Daniel Espinosa; Screenwriters: Daniel Espinosa, Maria Karlsson; Starring: Joel Kinnaman, Matias Varela, Dragomir Mrsic, Lisa Henni, Mahmut Suvakci; Running time: 124 mins; Certificate: 15
Up-and-comer Joel Kinnaman will be donning the visor for a remake of RoboCop next year, but this crime thriller is a low-tech affair made in his native Sweden. It's not short on ambition, though. Writer/director Daniel Espinosa, who has also been singled out by Hollywood bigwigs (and recently helmed Denzel Washington thriller Safe House) wrestles a sprawling novel into shape.
Still, a little patience is required early on as he flits between the daily tribulations of economics student Jw (Kinnaman), Chilean fugitive Jorge (Matias Varela) and Serbian hired muscle Mrado (Dragomir Mrsic). Initially, Jorge appears to be the star of the show, pulling off a daring prison escape while Jw drives his cab and hits the books, dreaming of a better life.

Thanks to Steig Larson, there’s a perceived appetite for all things Swedish so some of the more stylish or interesting books and films are coming over here in drips and drabs. The most recent import is Easy Money, a film that benefits from a moral gravity underlying the crime tale. Adapted by director Daniel Espinosa from Jens Lapidus’ 2006 novel Snabba Cash, it tells the story of a student, Jw (Joel Kinnaman), who falls for Sophie (Lisa Henni ), an heiress so turns to crime in order to keep up with her lavish lifestyle. You just know things are going to spiral out of control this point on so the key for the production is keeping us in plausible suspense and entertained. Sure enough, he crosses the Serbian mafia and gets embroiled with Jorge (Matias Padin Varela), a fugitive from the mob. It’s dark and violent and messy.

Ah yes, the allure of film noir is so very addictive. Set-up saps, dangerous dames, crime bosses, goons with gats, they’ve been a part of American cinema since the 1940′s. One of the genre’s biggest fans is Martin Scorsese ( you could say he put his own spin on them starting with Mean Streets and Taxi Driver ). Well, Mr. S knows when it’s done well, that why he’s put his name ( as in “Martin Scorsese presents” ) on this Swedish import. Sweden? The land of dour relationship dramas? Well, it turns out that they can make a very engaging crime thriller. Particularly director Daniel Espinosa ( he’s already jumped across the pond to make the recent Denzel Washington spy caper Safe House ), who gives us the taut nail-biter Easy Money. And if you know your noir, you know there’s nothing easy about going after those elusive big bucks.

It’s hard not to miss The Sopranos, even five years after one of the most publicized and most disappointing series’ endings ever, you felt a closeness and a sympathy towards them because it made your family seemed just a kilo less dysfunctional.
With the new film Easy Money Director Daniel Espinosa replaces a bit of bada-bing with class warfare, thanks to the international wise guy film.
The Swedish import (with the cooler name Snabba Cash) arrives in North America after filling box office coffers in its Norwegian homeland. A multi-cultural pursuit of happiness thanks to cocaine begins with Jonah “Jw” Westlund (Joel Kinnaman), a finance student by day and cab driver by night. Jw has more than his next fare in mind as he wants to escape his lower middle class past and starving student present. Opportunity comes knocking when his cab bosses offer him a chance to nurse...

Scream 4
Opens: April 15th 2011
Cast: Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Mary McDonnell, Emma Roberts Director: Wes Craven
Summary: Sidney Prescott, now the author of a self-help book, returns home to Woodsboro on the last stop of her book tour. There she reconnects with family and friends, but it also brings about the return of Ghostface which puts the whole town in danger.
Analysis: Back in late 1996 when I first began covering film news, "Scream" was released and became more than just a sleeper hit. After years of genre movies being relegated to direct-to-video status, this comedic slasher spawned the biggest surge in the horror film genre since "Halloween" almost two decades before. Its post-modern stylings and witty self-aware dialogue went on to be a big influence on films and television in general.
Yet the "Scream" series itself never could quite capture that glory again. By the time the...
