Adam Sandler received some of his strongest reviews of his career for his performance in Netflix’s “Hustle,” which dropped on the platform back in June. The actor and producer has always seemed like an easy target for critics to unload in reviews however, Sandler has never pretended to be anything more than who he is: a guy who loves movies and loves making them with his friends.
“I like working hard,” Sandler says. “I like being around my friends who work hard. We push each other. ‘Hustle’ was a brand new vibe for us.”
On the film awards season premiere of the award-winning Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Sandler sits down to discuss his performance in the Netflix sports dramedy “Hustle.” He discusses the awards buzz surrounding his role, whether or not we’ll ever get a full-length album of his music and the type of movie he’s dying to make.

Adam Sandler really, really loves basketball, and — in his post-“Meyerowitz Stories” era — he also seems to be interested in making good movies. At the very least, he no longer seems actively opposed to the idea. With “Hustle,” those two passions come together (again) in a grounded, affecting, and immaculately made dramedy that has far more in common with “Jerry Maguire” and “The Way Back” than it does any of the other Happy Madison productions on Netflix.
If it falls a bit short of those other movies by opting for easy lay-ups over more ambitious field goals, “Hustle” still drives to the net hard enough to seem like the second coming of Madison 23 Productions, the short-lived subsidiary that Sandler created for his more serious work (and then euthanized after “Reign Over Me” and “Funny People” both flopped).
It’s also the best film that LeBron James and Maverick Carter’s...

The two sides of Adam Sandler — buffoon mogul of lowest-common-denominator comedies, gifted actor for serious filmmakers — are making an attempt to bridge the gap with the basketball saga “Hustle.”
Though it’s a Happy Madison for Netflix production (where Sandler has lucratively parked his shingle for years), it’s also an attempt to capture some of the dramatically richer, indie sensibility of his why-hasn’t-he-been-nominated-for-an-Oscar-yet turns in fare like “Uncut Gems” and “The Meyerowitz Stories.”
The result, as directed by the promising Jeremiah Zagar (“We The Animals”), is an agreeable combination drill of humor, hurt, on-court action and redemptive uplift that’s closer to simply being a solidly inspiring sports movie than anything notably representative of the Sandler oeuvre.

“Do you love this game?” Adam Sandler lays it on the line for a young basketball prodigy in the first trailer for “Hustle,” where Sandler plays a scout trying to get back into the game. And he has some tough words for his future star.

Adam Sandler’s next Netflix original movie is “Hustle,” a basketball comedy that pairs the actor with acclaimed “We the Animals” helmer Jeremiah Zagar. The film casts Sandler as a basketball recruiter who travels overseas to try and convince an international basketball star to come to the U.S. and play in the NBA. During a recent appearance on “The Dan Patrick Show,” Sandler revealed that Netflix altered the movie’s original concept that saw his character traveling to China to find a basketball star.
“It was written originally that I find a player in China and somehow, Netflix is not in China,” Sandler said. “So they were like, ‘Would you guys please make it so we find someone in Latin America or Europe?’ So the next thing you know, I’m in Majorca [Spain]…[but] it was originally, ‘Find a player in China.’”

Hollywood loves a great sports story almost as much as it loves a story of overcoming the odds to find redemption. Oscar- and Grammy-winning artist Common’s upcoming movie will give audiences both.
Common has teamed up with Steel Springs Pictures to produce “Rising Above,” a new movie based on the true story of Howard University’s soccer team and its legendary coach Lincoln “Tiger” Phillips. The movie follows events as the 1971 Howard soccer team was unfairly stripped of their champion title by the NCAA, and how a then 29-year-old Phillips fought for redemption against racial injustice for the soccer players and himself, ultimately regaining the title in 1974.
Now 80 years old, Phillips has continued to break barriers, becoming the first Black professional soccer coach in U.S. history, and receiving the sport’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.

Hubie Halloween may have only landed on Netflix a couple of weeks ago, and continued the actor’s impressive winning streak of incredibly popular titles, but Adam Sandler is already hard at work on his next exclusive project for the streaming service. Having threatened to make a terrible movie on purpose after being snubbed at the Academy Awards for his performance in Uncut Gems, let’s hope that Hustle doesn’t see him making good on his promise.
The sports comedy was only announced in May, but cameras are now rolling on the latest Happy Madison effort. The story focuses on a washed up basketball scout who discovers an incredible player in China and wants to bring him over to the United States to join the NBA. And in an unusual twist for a Sandler film, Hustle was pitched to him by Netflix after they acquired the script from Legendary.

With so many digital outlets vying for our attention, it seems we’re never too far away from the next streaming sensation.
In 2020 alone, we’ve had season 2 of Sex Education, the so-bizarre-you-must-see-it-with-your-own-eyes Tiger King and, more recently, The Last Dance, the definitive new docuseries on the rise and rise of Michael Jordan.
Even if you’re not a basketball fan, it’s an incredible account of Jordan and the Chicago Bulls, and has since earned rave reviews across the board. And so, hoping to strike while the iron is still piping hot, Netflix is moving forward with a basketball-themed feature film entitled Hustle.
Per Collider, Adam Sandler will headline the new drama, which has the backing of producer and all-around NBA superstar LeBron James. The logline reads as so:
The story follows an American basketball scout (Sandler) who is unjustly fired after discovering a once-in-a-lifetime player abroad. The scout...

The trailer dropped during Microsoft’s Inside Xbox show at Gamescon in Cologne, Germany.
Elba plays a coach, Dawson stars as a player adviser and Middleditch as an agent. Other faces in the trailer include Mark Cuban, Ernie Hudson, Lamorne Morris and Scottie Pippen. Even before he sets foot on the court in an NBA game this season, LeBron James has had quite a year. On the TV side alone, James has struck series deals with every broadcast network, many prestige cable outlets, and a streaming service to boot. Aside from the biggest title on his film docket, the long-awaited “Space Jam 2,” James has lent his stamp to a number of features that exist outside the basketball world.

The Universal folks are keeping their enemies close and their family members in-house. Justin Lin, who has been working with asphalt skidmarks (Fast & Furious items), will, according to Variety, step onto the Focus Features lot for Times Square. The old Focus Features would place their sole thriller in the late August dumping season slot, while it looks like the new Focus strategy embraces the genre. Focus Features acquired the Taylor Materne & Jacob Rubin’s Black List (lower ranked) script for Lin to direct. Chernin Entertainment, Perfect Storm Entertainment’s Lin and Troy Craig Poon and Far Hills Pictures produce.
Gist: Set amidst the transformation of Times Square from New York’s seediest neighborhood to the commercialized Disneyland it is today, when a secret from his past is unearthed, a young man’s loyalties are divided between his neighborhood boss who raised him and the grizzled ex-cop who swore to protect him.

Though the highest priorities on his to-do list right now are the pilot for Us TV drama Scorpion and the sequel to The Bourne Legacy, Justin Lin is still pondering other potential projects. Focus Features has nabbed the rights to the script Times Square for him to handle. Written by Taylor Materne and Jacob Rubin, Times Square is a crime thriller set in the days when the titular New York centrepiece was more a squalid, porn-happy, crime-ridden dump than the brightly lit, Disney-sponsored family-friendly venue it is today. Against that backdrop a young man finds his loyalties split between the neighbourhood crime boss that raised him and the ex-cop who has sworn to protect him. And then a secret from his past comes rattling back to haunt him... When this might shoot is anyone’s guess; and Lin has been attached to several projects without actually taking the job before.

Focus Features has acquired Times Square, a Black List script from Taylor Materne and Jason Rubin, for director Justin Lin to helm. The crime thriller takes place during the “last days of old Times Square,” as it underwent a transition from a “seedy lawless Midtown Manhattan dump to a family-friendly corporate mecca.” With that as its setting, the plot will follow a young man who, after a secret from his past surfaces, finds that his loyalties are split between “his neighborhood boss who raised him and the grizzled ex-cop who swore to protect him.”

There is either a couple of football fans or Jerry Maguire/Moneyball with this year’s most liked unproduced screenplay. Close to 300 hundred film executives provided with the Black List creators a top ten of their favorite screenplays of the year and the consensus first overall pick (with 65 votes) comes from the recently featured in Variety (10 Screenwriters to Watch 2012) tandem of Rajiv Joseph & Scott Rothman and their drama which has nothing to do with enlisting in the armed forces. Draft Day – about the day in the life of a fictitious Buffalo Bills Gm appears to currently be in turnaround — which only means I expect to see this greenlight perhaps a little later than sooner – worth noting: top spot almost guarantees that the film will indeed go into production (2006, 2010 and 2011 are the exceptions.) Among the more alluring logline subjects we find on the list, I’d be keen on reading the...
