U.K. broadcaster industry Channel 4 has launched a new program aimed at improving off-screen diversity in the post-production sector.
The 4Pp (4 Post Production) initiative will offer five mid to senior-level individuals from underrepresented backgrounds a six-month program of bespoke skills gap training, mentoring from senior figures in the industry and shadowing and placement opportunities.
Developed in partnership with dialogue editor and dubbing mixer Emma Butt, who has over 12 years of experience in the industry and recently wrote a paper on the lack of diversity in the post-production sound sector in TV, the program is the first of its kind. The initiative was created following a panel session hosted by Channel 4 and Butt earlier this year, which discussed diversity, equity and inclusion in post-production.
Successful applicants will be mentored by Butt and other leading industry professionals throughout the program, funded by Channel 4’s training and development strategy, 4Skills. The positions...

A virtual panel organized by Channel 4 has shed light on the findings of the recent Access into Action Industry Access Survey. The Wednesday panel was moderated by Channel 4 journalist Jordan Jarrett-Bryan, and included well-known industry figures like screenwriter Jack Thorne and producer Bryony Arnold.
The Access into Action survey was conducted in late 2022 as a joint effort by Channel 4 and Amazon Studios U.K. as part of an ongoing effort to increase accessibility and inclusion in Britain’s entertainment industry. The anonymous questionnaire surveyed 105 organizations spanning production companies, broadcasters and streamers.
The findings have revealed troubling statistics, like the fact that 25% of surveyed establishments were physically inaccessible, and the same proportion had no functioning accessible toilets. While acknowledging that 75% of respondents rented their production offices, Channel 4 Disability Lead Ally Castle stated that this could be a stepping stone for future conversations with landlords regarding improvements in building accessibility.

The long-awaited economic measures for the self-employed revealed by U.K. Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak on Thursday have elicited mixed response from the film and TV industry’s predominantly freelance workforce.
Self-employed individuals can claim 80% of their average income over the last three years up to £2,500 a month, which is taxable. To be eligible, individuals must earn more than 50% of their income from being self-employed, have trading profits of less than £50,000, and have a self-assessment tax return for 2019.
“The Chancellor has come through, but not without strings,” Shilpen Savani, employment law specialist at law firm Gunnercooke, tells Variety. “You must be able to prove your income, and make sure your tax returns are up to date. It seems this largesse in a time of need will also result in higher national insurance contributions in the future.”
However, the scheme will begin only in June, with those in immediate...
