Pinocchio, The Crossing and Wolfwalkers are vying for the award, to be decided by audiences of 12- to 14-year-olds across Europe. Even in difficult times like these, with cinemas closed in many countries, the European Film Academy's Efa Young Audience Award invites 12-14-year-olds across Europe to join the international jury, watch three nominated films and vote for the winner of the 2021 award. The three nominees are Matteo Garrone's Pinocchio (Italy/France), Johanne Helgeland's The Crossing (Norway) and Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart's Wolfwalkers (Ireland/Luxembourg/France). The European Film Academy and Efa Productions have announced the Efa Documentary Selection, a list of 13 European documentaries recommended for a nomination for this year's European Film Awards. There are 14 European countries represented in this year’s Efa Documentary Selection. Irish producer Mike Downey, who was recently elected as chairman of the board of the European Film Academy, has told Variety that he’d like to work more closely with other film academies, including the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, as well as continuing Efa’s work as a campaigner for persecuted filmmakers.
Downey, CEO of Film and Music Entertainment, had previously served as Efa’s deputy chairman, and takes the baton as chairman from Polish director Agnieszka Holland, who has been at the helm for the past six years.
