“It’s a family dinner.”
So said Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Fremaux close to 11 p.m. while standing on a well-list stage inside a starry Chopard dinner at Carlton Beach on Friday. It definitely had that feel — like a glamorous, diamond-drenched family reunion with a menu by two Michelin-starred chef Bruno Oger and performance by Juliette Armanet — as the luxury jeweler hosted the gathering to award a Trophee Chopard to both Daryl McCormack and Naomi Ackie as validation for their breakout status on the big-screen.
The room was filled with festival relatives in the form of this year’s jury — both competition and Un Certain Regard members like Ruben Östlund, Brie Larson, Paul Dano and John C. Reilly — and veteran attendees like Rossy de Palma and Carla Bruni. And then the official Cannes family like Fremaux, Iris Knobloch and Chopard’s Caroline Scheufele, representing the festival’s partner of more than two decades.

Following a festival run that included Cannes, Toronto, and New York, Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s outstanding Asako I & II hits U.S. shores on May 10. The new film from the director of 2016’s acclaimed epic Happy Hour concerns Asako, a young woman whose first love mysteriously disappears, only to reenter her life in the form of a different, identical-looking man who claims no association. From here, things grow complicated.
With its release comes a trailer set to the alternately uplifting and melancholic sounds of Juliette Armanet’s French pop hit “À la Folie,” here rerecorded in Japanese. Having seen the film, I can vouch for its effect being representative of the whole: mysterious in nature but intuitively understood, distinctly Japanese in form yet wholly accessible, Hamaguchi’s film was a highlight of my 2018 viewing. Our own review out of Cannes was not quite as enthused, but it’s precisely the sort...

Christian Grey can sing?
The official soundtrack listing for Fifty Shades Freed has been released and it appears Jamie Dornan is more than just the leading man in the movie.
The 35-year-old actor's name is attached to a bonus track on the soundtrack titled "Maybe I'm Amazed."
Dornan isn't the only star apparently both acting and singing in the sequel. Rita Ora -- who portrays Christian's sister, Mia Grey, in the erotic book-turned-movies -- collaborates with Liam Payne on the song "For You (Fifty Shades Freed)," which is the second song on the soundtrack.
Other familiar artists to lend their musical skills to the movie include Sia, Julia Michaels, Dua Lipa, Jessie J, Hailee Steinfeld, Ellie Goulding, Danny Elfman and Mike Snow.
Here's a look at the complete track listing:
1. "Capital Letters" – Hailee Steinfeld x BloodPop®
2. "For You (Fifty Shades Freed)" – Liam Payne and Rita Ora
3. "Sacrifice" – Black Atlass featuring Jessie Reyez
4. "High" – Whethan and Dua Lipa[p...
