In a year defined by the dual strikes, talent was muzzled, unable to promote projects many had worked on for years. For major stars like Seth Rogen or Bradley Cooper this was merely a missed opportunity to talk about a passion project. But for breakout stars like The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri, One Piece‘s Iñaki Godoy, Reservation Dogs’ Devery Jacobs, Blue Beetle’s Xolo Maridueña and The Machine screenwriter Kevin Biegel it meant experiencing a major career milestone from the sidelines. They share what they did to mark the occasion away from the spotlight.

Netflix’s release of viewing data for virtually its entire library provided the broadest public glimpse to date into the performance of movies and TV series on a streaming service. It could also prove to be a boon to the people who do business with the company.
The streamer on Dec. 12 put out a list of every movie, special and season of TV that drew at least 50,000 hours of viewing worldwide between January and June of 2023 and said it plans to issue similar semiannual reports in the future (with potentially less lag between the end of the reporting period and the release of data). Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos told reporters the company has been on a “continuum” of becoming more transparent with data in the past couple of years — even as he insisted that it shares “much more detailed information” with creators.

Though the “Community” movie is still very much happening, its script still needs to be finished.
In a recent profile with The Hollywood Reporter, series creator Dan Harmon revealed that he and one of his former show writers, Andrew Guest, “still need to hole up for a few days and finish the script,” reporter Lacey Rose wrote. The holdup comes from not wanting to waste the cast’s time.
“I don’t want these people, like Emmy-winning Donald Glover, who are bothering to gather out of loyalty to this thing, to come back and once again be getting blue pages run down by an intern that totally contradict what they spent all night memorizing,” Harmon said. “I want to have a veneer of, ‘Here’s your reward.’ I don’t want them to go, like, ‘Oh, he’s learned nothing, he’s treating us like cattle again.’”

It is the best of times and the worst of times for podcasting. In 2023, the industry put the brakes on a period of lavish spending and nine-digit megadeals and — much as its streaming counterparts did last year — followed largesse with austerity. Facing challenges surrounding the advertising model, macroeconomic concerns and a post-pandemic slowdown, some of the biggest players, including Spotify, Vox Media and NPR, announced mass layoffs. Many others — like SiriusXM and Amazon — cut their podcast budgets significantly. And yet, unlike in other struggling segments of the entertainment business, audiences are continuing to grow with no ceiling in sight. Bill Geddie, who created the ABC talk show The View with Barbara Walters, produced many of her audience-grabbing TV specials and served as a partner in her production company for a quarter-century, has died. He was 68.
Geddie died Thursday at his home in Rancho Mirage of a heart-related issue, his daughter Allison told The Hollywood Reporter.
“He was a big deal in TV, but at home he was an even ‘bigger than life’ husband and dad,” his family said in a statement. “He had a genuine love for television and entertainment. He would try everything and did it well — screenwriting, recording podcasts, playing guitar and writing songs and loved a wide range of music from country to jazz.
“His favorite band was The Beatles, and he never thought he would have the opportunity to meet one of his personal heroes, Paul McCartney, in person, but his dream came true. The...

Taking things too far. Pedro Pascal has been a fan-favorite star for years, however, his breakthrough role in “Game of Thrones” almost took its toll!
During a recent edition of The Hollywood Reporter‘s Actor Roundtable Pascal participated in — alongside Kieran Culkin, Jeff Bridges, Michael Imperioli, Evan Peters and Damson Idris — moderator Lacey Rose asked the group about their typical or most memorable interactions with fans.
Damson said how many people joke that he’s “their husband,” while Culkin explained how people seem to feel very comfortable putting their arms around him, or grabbing and touching him.
For Pascal, the interactions he remembers were decidedly more weird.
“I remember, earlier on, because of ‘Game of Thrones’ and the way my character died — speaking of touching — people were super into taking selfies with their thumbs in my eyes,” he joked, referring to how his “GoT” character, Oberyn Martell, was killed in...

The complete and utter implosion of Justin Roiland's massively successful animation career continues to be one of 2023's most shocking stories. The co-creator of "Rick and Morty" (with Dan Harmon) and "Solar Opposites" (with Mike McMahan), and executive producer of the just-debuted "Koala Man" was viewed admirably by his many fans as a subversive visionary. His shows are dark and painfully funny, but, deep down good-hearted. His characters are screw-ups scrambling to make sense of a world gone mad. They're misfits with whom disillusioned viewers could relate. If it came out that Roiland was spending as many hours in therapy as he was in the writers' room, no one would've been surprised.
But when a January 12 NBC News story revealed that Roiland was facing two felony domestic violence charges brought against him by a woman he was dating in 2020, the entire entertainment industry was left reeling. For fans who'd...

On Nov. 7, the Writers Guild of America unveiled its negotiating committee for its upcoming 2023 contract talks, a list that combines longtime union leaders with prominent members and writers working across genres. But so far, without a general membership meeting or “pattern of demands” released, guild members have been left guessing about whether the union might mount a credible strike threat in the spring or table harder-hitting talks for a more economically stable time.
While top execs are preparing for a strike they are sure is coming after the WGA’s contract expires May 1 — and the WGA leadership has been nettled by the Directors Guild of America initiating informal talks with employers — the writers themselves are less certain.

More details about the end of “The Wendy Williams Show” are coming to light. In The Hollywood Reporter‘s latest cover story, the outlet details the final days of the long-running talk show, which came amid a series of health issues of its eponymous host. A trio of THR editors have been tapped as interim leaders in the wake of editorial director Matthew Belloni’s abrupt departure from the publication on Monday, multiple individuals familiar with the company told Variety.
The interim editors are Jeanie Pyun, Belloni’s deputy editorial director; Tom Seeley, senior vice president of digital media; and Lacey Rose, TV editor. A spokesperson for THR corporate parent Valence Media declined to comment on the matter.
Still reeling from Belloni’s exit after his intense conflicts with THR-Billboard Group president Deanna Brown and Valence Media co-CEOs Modi Wiczyk and Asif Satchu, the trio has been set to steady the organization while a permanent replacement for Belloni is hired, one that Variety previously reported will come from outside the company.
Belloni’s departure shocked many THR staffers amid widely reported accounts of Brown, Wiczyk, Satchu attempting to meddle with the publication’s editorial independence.

FX and Kurt Sutter have sentenced "The Bastard Executioner" to death, ending the fantasy series after an expensive, low-rated single season. In an unusual move, Sutter decided to announce the decision via an ad released to the Hollywood trades, in which he admitted, "The audience has spoken, and unfortunately, the word is 'meh.'" Sutter also gave several interviews to the trades, including a long and typically candid one with Hollywood Reporter's Lacey Rose, where he acknowledged that the numbers simply weren't there for his follow-up to "Sons of Anarchy," and that he was working himself so hard (and delivering script pages at the last second, David Milch-style) that he couldn't continue his usual practice of directing his show's season finales. I didn't enjoy the show's first three hours, and between other viewing options and the bonus length of most episodes, I never felt particularly eager to try to catch up.

In reviews, podcasts and tweets, it has become common in recent years for me to lament the influx of British and Australian actors masquerading as Americans, all perpetrating the same flat, generic accents as if Americans all come from the same state, which is no state at all, but rather some nether-region dialect coaches call Mid-Atlantic or something. I take semi-feigned umbrage at this infiltration and I am, indeed, a bit irked that a good 75 percent of the Brits and Aussies are trapped by exhaustively studied, but ultimately affectless accent work that leads them to give robotic performances they'd never tolerate from themselves in their native tongues. Yes, I get my hackles up, but I know it isn't actually important. The rise in work for Aussie and British actors is largely linked to the expanding TV universe, and even if this most recent upfronts season saw an encouraging uptick in...

Tyrant, premiering Tuesday night on FX, brings the Godfather plot to the Middle East. The Arab drama centers on Bassam Al-Fayeed (Adam Rayner), a Pasadena-based pediatrician who escaped his past and lives with his America wife (Jennifer Finnigan) and children (Anne Winters and Noah Silver) as Barry. That past, the pilot episode reveals, entails a Middle East upbringing in which he’s the youngest son of Khaled Al-Fayeed (Nasser Faris), the dictator of fictional nation Abbudin. When Barry returns, accompanied by his family, for the first time in 20 years, he’s thrown back into the familial and national politics of his youth. The Killing is the new Arrested Development. The American crime drama based on the original Danish Forbrydelsen will get a fourth and presumably final six-episode season to air exclusively on Netflix. The news of the gritty, Seattle-based whodunnit’s resurrection comes just two-and-half months after AMC announced it was cancelling the series. On September 10, 2013, the cable channel made it clear it would not order more episodes of the program, as its third season more or less flatlined in terms of ratings and critical appeal. That wasn’t the first time AMC tried to end the series, either. The Killing has a history of avoiding death. AMC originally cancelled the show after the conclusion of its second season back in July 2012. Then, in January 2013, the cable channel brought another 12 episodes back thanks to a unique partnership with Netflix. Lacey Rose at The Hollywood Reporter notes the first two seasons of The...
