I can’t say I have a vast knowledge, or much knowledge at all of Thai action films, but I was excited to check this latest one out – Kitty the Killer.
Now, of course, action movies have never gone away. They’ve been around forever but it feels like ever since John Wick, the revenge action film has been more popular than ever, and therefore, more and more are getting made. And Kitty the Killer has some similarities with John Wick and plenty of other popular action movies.
There is a revenge story here (although no dog this time), and there is a ‘Guardian’ of the killer (or killers) – another thing that has been popularized lately, see Killing Eve, The Kingsman, etc., and there are plenty of fight scenes.

On the occasion of Kitty the Killer being released on theaters in the US by Epic pictures group, Lee Thongkham (inside a taxi!!) talks about shooting an action movie, the inspiration behind the story and cats, the anime-like approach, the animation, the cinematography, the casting particularly Ploypailin Thangprapaporn as Dina and Denkhun Ngamnet as Charlie, the most difficult scene and his favorite one, cinematography, the Thai movie industry and his next projects, which may include a sequel.

Despite this one being a mediocre season for Asian cinema, Nyaff still managed to include a number of gems in its huge program, once more justifying its place as the biggest festival of Asian cinema in the Western world. With an obvious focus on titles by and about women, the programmers offered a diverse selection that included the whole spectrum of genre films from the whole region, while also of note was the inclusion of a plethora of shorts, both live-action and animation. Japanese and Korean (family) dramas, action and horror from Asean countries, while the Chinese mainland cinema highlighted a couple of captivating stories. Comedies are still a mixed-bag, at least for the Western audience, but some progress is also evident in that category also. Without further ado, here is a list of this year's coverage of New York Asian Film Festival

As we have mentioned many times, the epicenter of Asian action movies has long since moved from Hong Kong towards the Asean countries. Thai Lee Thongkham proves the fact once more with “Kitty the Killer”, a movie that implements the whole girls-with-weapons concept through an approach that also includes much comedy and a certain level of sensualism.
Kitty The Killer is screening at New York Asian Film Festival
The Agency is a secret society formed by a clan of men known as the Guardians, who have trained girls as assassins, in order for their killings to retain balance in the world. The girl assassins are all codenamed Kitty and they stay in the shadows, working in all parts of society, as schoolgirls, housewives, store and office clerks and everything in between. Essentially, they hide in plain sight until their Guardian calls them to do their killing. As the movie starts,...

The recent deluge of top-tier genre fare emerging from Thailand has been a joyous sight to behold for horror fanatics as the country has positioned itself quite nicely in the past years as a major player in the market. From the found-footage supernatural nightmare in The Medium, ghost movies in Inhuman Kiss, Cracked, and Ghost Lab to the giant monster throwback Leio, the country's output has allowed them to rise significantly in the crowded Asian scene with plenty looking for Japan, South Korea, and to a lesser extent Indonesia and China for their film output. Now, fresh on the heels of his recent hit The Maid, Lee Thongkham teams up with Aqing Xu for a new monster movie called The Lake which is now available through Epic Pictures.
Living in a remote Thai village, Lin (Suchar Manayang) is distraught when her younger sister May (Wilawan Chatborirak) discovers a giant lizard...

The Land of Smiles is trampled by an amphibious monster in Lee Thongkham and Aqing Xu’s creature-feature The Lake. After a mysterious egg washes ashore, an unknown predator rises from the Mekong River and goes on a rampage. The massive stars of this Thai-Chinese co-production are an achievement in modern kaiju effects, and a few set pieces are engaging, however the film as a whole is weighed down by a nondescript story and a cast of dreary characters.
The Lake is a contemporary update of all those straightforward kaiju classics of yesteryear, such as Mothra and Gorgo. Here a larger than life monster’s offspring is also stolen by humans, driving the parent to take drastic measures. This includes the near decimation of a Thai village toward the film’s beginning. The mayhem born from this ferocious attack alone is elevated by animatronic and suitmation effects as well as forceful editing.

A big budget Thai/Chinese co-production, this year’s brand new monster movie The Lake has now unleashed a brand new trailer, this one equipped with English subtitles.
It’s also a much better trailer all around, giving us several clear shots of the incredible practical monster designed by artist Jordu Schell (Cloverfield, The Thing, Starship Troopers, The Mist, Feast, Avatar, Men in Black, Planet of the Apes, The Cabin in the Woods, Predators).
The monster in The Lake was brought to life using practical life-sized animatronics alongside CGI, and the glimpses we get of the beast here are absolutely jaw-dropping to behold.
In The Lake, “One child brings back a strange egg, soon realizing that it’s a monster egg. It emerged from the lake, and it now wants to kill everyone in the whole town.”
The film released theatrically in Thailand on August 18, with no U.S. date at this time.

The current slate of Thailand-based horror films hasn’t produced much in terms of stand-out offerings ever since the classic “Nang Nak” arrived just over twenty years ago. While there’s been a slew of fare released in the intervening years full of enjoyable spooks and chills, that landmark film has rarely been approached much less topped by the country’s output, outside of the stellar “Krasue: Inhuman Kiss” from 2018. Now, first-time feature director Lee Thongkham offers the next great Thai genre effort with this fantastic new offering which is widely available around the world via Netflix.
A new housemaid named Joy (Ploy Sornarin) begins working in a luxurious mansion owned by Uma (Savika Chaiyadej), a wealthy woman, and Nirach (Theerapat Sajakul), her husband. Shadowy figures lurk in Lee Thongkham’s stylised horror, which wrongfoots the audience with jump scares aplenty
Thai writer-director Lee Thongkham’s horror feature is a giddy, gory little treat. Unfortunately, it’s hard to explain exactly what’s so fab about it without spoilers, so just take our word for it as long as you have the stomach for lots of fake blood and jump scares. Suffice to say that Thongkham is nimble when it comes to wrongfooting the viewer, and there’s some pleasingly pointed satire here as well, sticking it to rich, snobby people who think domestic workers are as disposable as empty washing up bottles.
The maid of the title is Joy (bob-haired ingenue Ploy Sornarin), a country girl who gets hired to schlep tea trays up and down the stairs in service to super-wealthy Uma (actor-model-singer Savika Chaiyadej), a woman so ridiculously haughty she dresses...
