The Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular is a must-see tribute to the show's tremendous musical repertoire...
Doctor Who has been around for over half a century, and a decade on from its triumphant return to TV, it's fair to say that it's never been more popular around the world. Events like the 2013 simulcast and special cinema screenings of The Day Of The Doctor will attest to this and it never seems like we're far off from another reminder of its regenerated global fandom.
Following successful runs in Australia and New Zeleand, the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular arena show reiterated that case on its first UK tour last week, drawing crowds across the nation. The BBC National Orchestra of Wales and members of the National Chorus of Wales went from Wembley to Glasgow over the course of seven dates, in celebration of composer Murray Gold's spellbinding musical score for the series.

"It's been over a decade - and if you had asked me then if I'd be writing music in 10 years' time for Doctor Who, I'd probably have said no - but it keeps replenishing itself, and you never feel like you've done it right, you just want to do it better every time."
Murray Gold's unyielding passion for scoring Doctor Who is plain to hear when one listens to his decade's worth of work on the series - there's a determination and drive behind these pieces, a refusal to be staid or to rely on a standard bag of tricks.
Gold's remarkable music is - no surprise - the biggest draw of the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular, a nationwide tour which comes to the UK following a stint in Australia and will travel to New York later in the year.

Controversial composer Alfred Schnittke was born November 24, 1934 in the Soviet Union's Volga Republic, an ethnic German enclave. In his mid-thirties he pioneered a broadly eclectic style of composing that drew on many classical styles (even sometimes quoting familiar Beethoven or Bach works, among others) as well as the occasional foray into jazz and pop. By 1972 his experimentalism had earned the disapproval of the Soviet Composers Union (the Soviets also weren't enamored of his occasional expressions of religion, for that matter), but a number of esteemed musicians who had left Russia to live in the West supported his work and brought him an international reputation. His work was basically pessimistic in outlook, but its emotional impact, and the accessibility of some of the styles he drew on, nonetheless seduced many listeners.
The contradictions in Schnittke's style are laid out in his liner notes to the Bis recording of his Symphony No.

The soundtrack to the last two Doctor Who Christmas specials is here to get you into the festive spirit...
Steven Moffat's approach to Doctor Who extends to the incidental music. Murray Gold's work has changed with the tone and approach of the writing. On this album you can really hear the influence of both the 'dark fairytale' and 'movie of the week' approaches to the show. It's reminiscent of John Williams, Barry Gray, and Disney soundtracks at times, perhaps unsurprisingly as The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe is obviously influenced by the Narnia films (once upon a time under the jurisdiction of the Mouse).
The first impression upon listening is that these sound more filmic than most TV soundtracks, and that this is the territory the Christmas Specials are trying to muscle in on. Now that On Demand and streaming services...

Doctor Who celebrated its 50th anniversary at the BBC Proms 2013 on Saturday (July 13).
The concert at the Royal Albert Hall was hosted by the most recent Doctor Matt Smith and co-star Jenna Coleman, who plays companion Clara.
"One of the great joys of playing this extraordinary, legendary Time Lord is the support and knowledge and love and brilliance of the fans - you really make the show what it is," Smith told the audience.
The fifth Doctor Peter Davison and Carole Ann Ford, who played the first companion Susan in 1963, also appeared at the event, which featured music from Doctor Who.
The BBC National Orchestra of Wales and London Philharmonic Choir, conducted by Ben Foster, provided the music.
A second Doctor Who Prom will take place later today, with both concerts being filmed for 50th anniversary specials to be shown in November.
