Saudi Arabia was the last place Israel-born American producer Uri Singer thought he would visit in his lifetime.
That was until a chance meeting on the White Noise red carpet in Venice with Mohammed Al Turki, CEO of the country’s Red Sea International Film Festival.
The pair met for lunch in Toronto and again by chance on another red carpet at the BFI London Film Festival, where Al Turki introduced Singer to festival managing director Shivani Pandya.
“She was amazing. There are a few things that have impressed me about Mohammed, his hiring and championing of women, and also the way he does the PR. It’s not just about money. He’s very funny and charming and there is a vision and a plan behind what he is doing,” said Singer.
This third meeting would result in Singer being invited to Red Sea’s second edition, running December...

Agathe Rousselle, the break-out star from the Cannes Palme d’Or winner Titane, will lead the sci-fi drama Low Orbit from producer Uri Singer, who was behind the Netflix adaptation of Don DeLillo’s White Noise.
Low Orbit takes place on a failed colony on another planet, where a romance grows between a female shuttle pilot and the wife of a cryogenically frozen engineer that the pilot has been ordered to transport off planet. The project has been described as Moon meets In the Mood for Love.
Nguyen-Anh Nguyen, the Vietnamese-Canadian director behind popular fantasy and sci-fi shorts The Akira Project and Hyperlight, will direct the project. Adam Bradley co-wrote the scrip with Nguyen.
Singer most recently debuted the Noah Baumbach-directed White Noise at the Venice Film Festival. The Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig-starrer is set to open the New York Film Festival.

"If we landed with them, that means we should've ejected." You have to see this impressive sci-fi short film titled Hyperlight, about two astronauts on a cool space ship traveling far to another place in the galaxy in another star system. Set at a time when humans have just achieved faster-than-light travel, this short has an ambitious concept but director Nguyen-Anh Nguyen pulls it off so amazingly well, with some slick VFX work and captivating sci-fi story. Hyperlight stars Jeananne Goossen, Peter Shinkoda, and Caroline Dhavernas. There's a few big twists in this and lots to process, but it's another must watch sci-fi short film. Thanks to Short of the Week for the tip. Synopsis for Hyperlight from Vimeo: 'Two elite astronauts wake up in the abyss of space; they return to their stranded ship and discover the surprising reason behind their mission's catastrophic failure." I've got an amazingly well made short film for you to watch today called Hyperlight. It comes from Nguyen-Anh Nguyen and the story centers on two "elite astronauts who wake up in the abyss of space; they return to their stranded ship and discover the surprising reason behind their mission's catastrophic failure." Once they are back on the ship, something is strangely not right.
The VFX work that was done for the film is fantastic and the movie is visually beautiful. But what really makes it great is that it's driven by a great story and wonderfully developed intelligent characters. The film also has a great plot twist that I don't want to ruin for you, so you're just going to have to watch it!

Nguyen-Anh Nguyen, the writer and director of The Akira Project and the short film "Temple," has released his latest project for us to enjoy. It’s a music video he directed for the group Black Tiger Sex Machin for a song called "Numbers."
The video is a stylish and visually awesome homage to the movie Blade and the opening of the film. It’s got a very heavy cyberpunk vibe to it, and there’s a little touch of Star Wars in there as well. This is the note that came along with the music video:
Prepare to enter the world of the Btsm Church in the new video for "Numbers". Being big-time fans of sci-fi, action and horror movies, Btsm wanted to pay homage to one of their childhood favorites, Blade. This video transposes the legendary opening sequence of this action thriller into Black Tiger Sex Machine's universe. Are you infected?...

"Temple" is a must-watch cyberpunk sci-fi short film that is set in the year 2045 A.D. It takes place in a futuristic society in which a new genetic disease is causing humans to reject their own organs. The only way they can survive is through cybernetic enhancements, and this story follows a desperate man who is put in a situation where he is forced to steal cybernetic implants to save an innocent life.
The movie comes from Nguyen-Anh Nguyen, who is the same guy behind The Akira Project. He did an awesome job with this film, and it’s really impressive to see what he was able to pull off with the slick visuals and a completely brutal fight scene. I liked the story and the concept, and I’d totally watch a feature film version of it. I think you’re going to like what you see.

Temple is a proof of concept short film for a science-fiction cyberpunk thriller helmed by the same team that produced The Akira Project, the crowd-sourced, live-action trailer based on the popular Akira Managa.
The director, Nguyen-Anh Nguyen, has since moves onto developing Temple as his first feature project, but still focusing on his passion for dystopian sci-fi, cyborgs, martial arts and, of course, manga.

"It's toxic... like human begins. I don't know what's going to kill to me - this filthy air? Or those fires that's eating me from the inside." Today's must watch short film is a martial arts sci-fi short called Temple, from director Nguyen-Anh Nguyen, the same guy behind The Akira Project previously. Set in the future where cybernetic enhancement as common, one desperate man fights another to take his bionic arm in order to help someone else who needs it to survive. There are some sleek visuals, and at least one okay fight scene in this. It's all designed to sell a full feature, so of course by the time it's over you still want to see more. Enjoy. Earlier this year a badass trailer was released for a fan-made live-action Akira film project. They call it Akira Project, and what I've seen from it so far has been insanely impressive. If you haven't seen that trailer yet, you have got to watch it now! You can do so by clicking here.
We were sent a VFX behind-the-scenes video for you to watch. It showcases the radical VFX talent that helped bring director Nguyen-Anh Nguyen's world of Akira to life. I would love to see these guys make a feature film adaptation of this classic anime.
Here's a note from the creators of the film about how it all came together.
The Akira Project is a crowd-sourced, non-profit project meant to create a live action fan trailer of Akira, the renowned manga-turned-anime film from the late 1980′s; a stunning example of both mediums as art forms. While Hollywood...
