Former X Factor contestant Katie Waissel has retrained as a lawyer in order to sue Simon Cowell’s Syco Entertainment for “ruining her life”.
Competing in 2010 on the popular British singing show, Waissel was considered the “most hated” contestant of the series by audiences.
At the time, she received acid attack threats online and death threats, allegedly from al-Qaeda, which she said caused her to suffer panic attacks and suicidal thoughts.
Since then, she’s seen therapists to treat post-traumatic stress disorder.
“The show ruined my life,” Waissel told The Times in a new interview.
In April 2021, she established the Owhl Foundation, a charity aiming to “oversee the welfare, human rights and liberty within the creative industry sector”.
A year later, she “fought tooth and nail” to join Bpp University in London’s postgraduate law course after deciding to retrain as a lawyer. Qualifying in July, the 36-year-old Waissel is...

It always starts the same way. The opening few piano notes of something slow by Coldplay or Labrinth. A contestant swallows hard, then starts talking about their sick mum/child/dog. And suddenly, before Cheryl can even grab a tissue, you're sat on your sofa blubbing like a toddler.
Yes: The X Factor has given us some of the most heartbreaking moments on TV over the years. And from hysterics at Judges' Houses to Simon Cowell's own rare, salty tears, here are 6 moments that shattered us, ruined us and gave us every feeling possible.
1. Gamu Gate
The so-called 'Gamu Gate' has become a central part of X Factor lore. 18-year-old Zimbabwe-born Gamu Nhengu had given flawless performances throughout the whole show, right through to her rendition of 'Cry Me Out' for Cheryl and will.i.am at Judges' Houses. Maybe it's the pressure. Or the hot stage lights. Or the tantalising proximity of Simon's high-waisted trousers. But it wouldn't be a series of The X Factor without rumours of romances. Already this year we've had the usual nudges and winks wiggling their way out from Boot Camp.
But it's only in the pressure cooker of live shows that things really start heating up - and acts inevitably turn to each other for comfort. So prepare yourself with seven of our favourite ever X Factor romances...
1. Wagner and Mary Byrne (2010)
Is it any surprise that 54-year-old, Brazilian-born Wagner turned out to be something of a ladies' man? No woman can resist a guy with bongos, and his throwback picture of himself holding a lion's tail paved the way for men posing with big cats on dating apps.
In this case, the woman he allegedly wooed was Ballyfermot's Tesco Mary, with...

Katie Waissel thinks Cheryl Fernandez-Versini is a ''horrible human''. The former 'X Factor' contestant - who was mentored by the 'Crazy Stupid Love' singer on the show in 2010 - has made no secret of her dislike for Cheryl in the past and has now spoken out again to accuse her of being two-faced. Katie said: ''I just thought her behaviour was shady and unnecessary - she publicly slammed me in her book without saying anything to my face but when she was my mentor, she kept trying to be my best friend and steal my cigarettes. I personally thought she was nasty,...

The X Factor knows how to create drama. From the blast of 'O Fortuna' as Simon Cowell and his buddies enter the stage, to former voiceover man Peter Dickson hamming it up, they've got the atmosphere nailed.
One of the most exciting elements of the show will always be the big Sunday night eliminations, especially if the dreaded Deadlock comes into play. Most of the time, the judges get it right, but sometimes there are downright shocks. Here are the biggest to date, brought to you in association with TalkTalk's new Bopheads app:
1. Laura White (series 5)
Wigan lass Laura was tipped for X Factor success in 2008's early stages, but found herself in a tough girls group with the public's favourite indie fairy Diana Vickers and future victor Alexandra Burke. Even so, no-one expected her to leave as early as the fifth week, especially with Ricky Gervais lookalike Daniel Evans still knocking around.

Cheryl Fernandez-Versinsi has hit back at recent weight loss criticism and insisted she's too "tough" to let it upset her.
The 32-year-old X Factor judge told The Sun: "I'm happy and healthy. It's just a shame for people who go through things similar to me - having had it for 13 years, it affects those people more because it hurts.
"Criticism hurts people. Not me, I'm tough," she added.
X Factor boss Simon Cowell jumped to Cheryl's defence and opined that comments about her weight haven't "necessarily been criticism, I think it's been concern."
He added that she's trying to put on weight and that the pair recently hit a burger bar during the Manchester auditions, recalling: "The first thing I did when I went to Manchester with her was eat. For some reason, we wanted a Wimpy rather than a McDonald's. We couldn't find one in the end but...

Katie Waissel has let rip (again) at former X Factor mentor Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and branded her a "prick".
Waissel was a finalist on the ITV talent show back in 2010 and five years on, the former finalist is still harbouring a grudge against judge Cheryl.
Speaking to Star Magazine about Cheryl's return to the panel this year, the 29-year-old aspiring singer said: "I think she's just there for the money.
"People think that I have this huge grudge against Cheryl. And granted, I do. I'm p***ed off for various reasons. If you ask me, she is fake as sh*t."
Waissel - who fell out with Cheryl after she made seemingly disparaging remarks about the former hopeful in her book Cheryl: My Story - continued to character assassinate.
"I just think there's no substance to her. She can be very abrupt and rude. I don't think she's a very nice human.

Could Simon Cowell not take a day out of his hectic schedule to (lightly) bang Louis Walsh and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini's heads together?
The bickering pair, who should know better, just cannot let bygones be bygones as they publicly entered their latest war of words.
Walsh seems to be at his most content when he's shooting his mouth off about the star, recently igniting their age-old feud by describing her as "lazy" and irrelevant" during his latest interview.
Cheryl took the bait and claimed Walsh - who previously dressed up as the popstar for a laugh - must have "some kind of an obsession" with her, and advised him to use his mouth to "say something positive". Which seems unlikely...
Even Simon Cowell has commented on their spat and likened the pair to Tom and Jerry.

The X Factor contestant Katie Waissel appears to have hinted that she could return to the show - as a judge.
Waissel returned to the programme for the 'Greatest Hits' performance on Saturday night (December 13), but was spotted at the end of the routine mouthing: "You owe me" at Simon Cowell.
She has now confirmed in her column for New! that she did indeed mouth those words, but insisted that she has no hard feelings towards Cowell.
After revealing that X Factor winner Ben Haenow thanked her for being a "great mentor", she continued: "I had no idea the cameras were on me when I had my little moment with Simon.
"I see viewers are fantastic lip readers and yes, I did say, 'You owe me one'. Simon and I are as close as pennies in a purse and yes there are very exciting things to look forward to for next year,...

And so it's over. Ben Haenow has been crowned the winner of The X Factor after months of auditions and more auditions and Boot Camp and Judges' Houses and live shows. Now what?
Well, we're not quite ready to say goodbye just yet, so we've collected some of our favourite moments of the series. We're not talking performances as such - we're talking all the silly sideshow bits and bobs that have made this series. Are any as good as Jedward doing their own backing vocals or Rachel Adedeji falling over? We'll leave that up to you to decide.
So without further ado, here they are, in no particular order...
1. Only The Young shouty man
We're not quite sure when we started noticing Only The Young shouty man, but that's just because it feels like he's always been there. The over-exuberant supporter has invaded our consciousness to such an extent...

Ritchie was soon joined on stage by past contestants Chloe Jasmine, Wagner Fiuza-Carrilho, Diva Fever and Chico Slimani.

After only four weeks of X Factor we're already starting to develop unhealthy obsessions with acts that we love and acts that we love to hate.
Next month we'll be heading to the Live Shows and we've already got a good idea of who we'd love to see getting a glitzy makeover and a bellowing Peter Dickson introduction.
Here are 9 acts we'd love to see every Saturday night this autumn.
1. Raign
Cheryl Cole's Kryptonite and nemesis, Raign is about as naturally likeable as a sharp kick in your naughty bits. But that's also what makes her so incredibly perfect for the Live Shows.
With an ego that would make even Simon Cowell blush, this melodramatic eccentric is exactly the sort of person the show's missed in recent years. Put it this way, we'd rather have Raign than a dozen Nicholas McDonalds.
2. Jake Quickenden

Has The X Factor found this year's winner already? And is she a fishmonger?
20-year-old South Shields fishmonger Lola Saunders doesn't live a glamorous lifestyle, admitting to the judges that she "stinks" of fish, but that might be all about to change after this audition.
X Factor quiz: Guess the judge from the outlandish quote
11 songs we don't want to hear on The X Factor this year
Lola blows away Simon Cowell and Cheryl Cole with her rendition of 'Make You Feel My Love', which is a world away from her day-to-day work gutting and flogging fish.
One contestant who has less success with the judges is 26-year-old Maria, who performs one of Simon Cowell's favourite songs, 'Street Life'.
Maria continually sings "shhtreee"' life rather than "Street" life and gives Cheryl Cole and Mel B a fit of the giggles.
Simon Cowell teases after her performance: "Do you know Shhtop?...

X Factor returned at the weekend with Simon Cowell and Cheryl Cole trying to salvage a show that has felt like it is stagnating in a Gary Barlow bubble of dreariness over the last two series.
X Factor first review: Cowell brings back sparkle, but not the talent
The new X Factor judges for 2014: What's the snap verdict?
Can you remember who won last year? Can you remember any of the finalists? Exactly. The show needed a rocket up its jacksie and, although this weekend's shows weren't perfect, they did at least bring back the show's old sense of humour.
If you missed it and don't fancy sitting through 37 ad breaks on ITV Player or the judges' 'bantz', here are the 11 auditions that you need to see.
11. Jay James
He was in the navy. Tick. He's been on a "journey". Tick. He's got a young child. Tick. Jay James...

X Factor is no stranger to returning contestants, but very few have such a large transformation as Chloe-Jasmine Whichello.
The singer impressed the judges with a coquettish and sultry rendition of 'Black Coffee' on Saturday's audition show, but do you remember her first appearance on the show in 2006? It's unlikely, because she is barely recognisable from eight years ago.
Sporting a garish pink cowboy hat and speaking in a voice quite unlike the posh tones viewers heard on Saturday, she's had a total transformation.
Simon Cowell said her performance was "too much" and "too over the top", and Sharon Osbourne said that she wasn't ready yet for a music career.
After she left the audition room, Cowell added: "She is every parent's nightmare... She doesn't want to work for a living, 'I want it all now'."

It's been four years since Simon Cowell was last on the X Factor panel in the UK. In his last series, he introduced the world to One Direction, the ratings were sky high and his show was the only thing people talked about on Monday morning at work.
He returns, after having his Us version of the show flop and dumped, to find that The X Factor is no longer the dominant force in British television.
BBC One's Strictly Come Dancing now reigns supreme in the ratings war and the tabloids and British public seem more interested in melting frozen Alaskas and Mary Berry's opinion on soggy bottoms than his reunion with Cheryl Fernandez-Versini behind the judges' desk.
Series 11 of The X Factor is the biggest challenge that Cowell has faced since he first controversially launched the show, spinning off his new found superstar status on Pop Idol.

The X Factor has helped launch the career of dozens of pop acts over the last decade. It has also given us Chico Time. You win some, you lose some.
Here is our definitive ranking of the 15 most ludicrous acts to ever grace Saturday nights on ITV.
15. Rylan
Rylan was already a regular on the reality TV circuit before The X Factor (he was a runner-up in the Sky Living monstrosity Signed By Katie Price), and he was a little bit more knowing and calculated than genuinely bonkers.
However, even if those floods of tears at Nicole Scherzinger's Judges' Houses were staged, they were staged brilliantly. The perfect I'm-mad-me contestant after a decade of near misses.
14. 2 Shoes
Charley Bird and Lucy Texeira were harmless and fairly innocuous as a pop duo. They spoke only in Essex slang ("Roll!") and insisted on calling each other "shoe", but the most ludicrous...

Phillip Schofield has claimed that the grandmother dubbed "Britain's oldest escort" propositioned him after she appeared on This Morning.
The presenter interviewed the 85-year-old star of My Granny the Escort Sheila Vogel-Coupe back in 2011 and was asked about the experience on Alan Carr Chatty Man.
"She was adorable. We loved her. And she was like a granny, a proper granny," Schofield said of Vogel-Coupe, who is the grandmother of Katie Waissel, a competitor on that year's X Factor.
"She has four or five clients a week and we asked her if she was busy the next day and she said, 'I have a 10 o'clock appointment but I'm free in the afternoon'.
"As we finished the interview, we went into the commercial break, she got up and left. And as she left she said to me, 'I'm free... If you would like to try...'."

Simon is back. Cheryl is back. Louis never went away in the first place. But who else could do an X Factor U-turn and try to rescue the show's faltering ratings?
If 2014 is going to be the year of the comeback on the ITV talent show, here are 6 more things that could potentially return to your autumn Saturday night TV schedule.
1. Gamu
Dumped by Cheryl for Katie 'sod it' Waissel in 2010, Gamu Nhengu's exit was, and always will be, a sore point for X Factor diehards. After being set up as a potential champion with her 'Walking on Sunshine' audition in the first show, there was a national outcry (well, we moaned about it a bit anyway) when she was axed. Gamu-gate and the hastag #bringbackGamu were born and we won't let them die until she gets a second chance.
2. Konnie Huq on The Xtra Factor

There are loads of fun ways to celebrate a tenth birthday. Going bowling, heading to Laserquest or even hiring a clown.
But for The X Factor, they have decided to shun all of these great ideas (Ok, maybe except the last one. Hi Louis!) in favour of something completely different…
Tonight, the remaining six contestants are saying 'Happy Birthday' by paying homage to the very best of what the show has produced over the past decade, from Alexandra to Leona, McElderry to, um, Ward.

My favourite X Factor moment has to be 'Gummogate', a kerfuffle that saw Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh quarrelling over American independent cinema. Jamie Archer's rendition of 'Crying' during 2009's Movie Week (c'mon, Simon, have you *really* seen that film?) irked Louis so much he seemed to question the very existence of Harmony Korine's cult oddity. This all leads to the question... has Louis seen Spring Breakers?...

1. Pe-ter Dick-Son!
Abi Alton. Luke Friend. Kingsland Rd. Nobody will ever match Rachel Adedeji will they? Speaking of Rachel Adedeji...
We know it wasn't technically in the Live Shows, but that video never gets old.
2. They gave us Wagner.
Glorious.
3. When they make Dermot dance.
What are the odds that Dermot will be twerking by the end of this year's series?
4. The incredible showmances.
Eggnog Quigglet and The Vickers way back in series 5. I bet The Vickers still has that Vote for Eggnog t-shirt under her pillow.
Harry Styles and Caroline Flack in series 7. A romance for the ages. Very different ages.
That woman who replaced Goldie Cheung. Some guy who was in a rubbish boyband. Yeah, series 8 was a bit rubbish.
Tesco Mary always denied it, but the sexual power of Wagner must surely have been too powerful to resist back in series 7.

Naomi Campbell is the latest big name from the modelling world to try her hand at reality TV, launching Sky Living's latest attempt at a 'Supermodel X Factor'.
Model reality shows in the UK have a patchy record and that's probably putting it politely. They can never truly compete with their Us counterparts when it comes to hideously mean judges, catty contestants and ludicrous melodrama over having to get your hair cut a couple of inches shorter.
Watch an extended preview of The Face:
Sky Living's signing of Campbell, modelling's most notorious and intriguing character, is probably the last roll of the dice for the format. If Campbell can't make a show about models interesting then I seriously doubt anybody can.
There are some promising early signs that The Face can be more than Next Top Model-lite.

Holly Willoughby became visibly annoyed with guest contributor Katie Hopkins on yesterday's This Morning (July 3).
The former Apprentice star made controversial comments about children's names and how they're linked to class.
Hopkins said: "I think you can tell a great deal from a name. For me there's certain names that I hear and I think, 'Urgh'. For me, a name is a shortcut of finding out what class that child comes from and makes me ask, 'Do I want my children to play with them?'
"There's a whole set of things that go with children like that and that's why I don't like those sorts of children."
Fellow guest Anna May Mangan was shocked to hear Hopkins's remarks, explaining that she was an Irish immigrant and had been criticised as a child because of it.
She said: "This is snort-worthy Katie. I can't believe that you're such an insufferable snob.

It looks fairly certain that the most unlikely of TV success stories - Olly Murs and Caroline Flack's Xtra Factor stint - is going to come to an end in 2013.
Murs's music career continues to soar (who'd have thought it!) and he's probably not going to have time this autumn to hashtag his bulge and get saucy with the Flackster and cheeky with Louis Walsh every Saturday night.
So who could possibly step into Olly's boots and team up with Caroline Flack this year? Reality Bites looks at a list of potential replacements:
Matt Edmondson
The T4 host was cruelly dumped off the show at the last minute and replaced by Olly Murs. His hilarious response on Twitter to the news showcased why he deserved the gig ("Got my bag packed, train tickets booked to Birmingham, copy of Simon's autobiography! Can't wait!... Cheryl Cole has admitted that she wasn't sure about X Factor contestant Katie Waissel during her first audition. The former judge, who went on to put Waissel through to live shows, made the confession in her new autobiography Cheryl: My Story. Waissel, who courted controversy throughout her stint on The X Factor, famously forgot the words to Queen's 'We Are the Champions' when she first tried out for the show in 2010, before singing Etta James's 'At Last'. "Simon [Cowell] had spent the past two years drumming into me that we needed acts who would be 'good TV'," Cole confessed. The 'Call My Name' star took a break from the series while she battled malaria, and later saw Waissel perform at Judges' Houses as part of the Girls category. Kitty Brucknell has promised to fight back on The X Factor after slipping into the bottom two last weekend, telling Digital Spy that she is ready to "bring the crazy". Brucknell narrowly avoided elimination last Sunday, but Louis Walsh's act has claimed that she will not compromise herself to please viewers or win votes. "I really, really want to win. I want to prove that you can be different and make a difference. But I think there's a culture in this country where we like the same safe, predictable people," said the 26-year-old. "So it will be difficult. But Britney has done it, GaGa has done it. So I think there's an audience out there for something different." The singer also said that she won't follow 2010 contestant Katie Waissel's path and try to reinvent herself to win over the public. "There's (more)...

The 24 year old singer found notoriety on last year’s series of the ITV show, after she became one of the most controversial characters in it’s history. Speaking on Daybreak this morning, when asked what words of wisdom she could offer to singers, currently competing in the London bootcamp, Waissel said:
I just think the best thing to do is go with the flow, enjoy yourself and really take it for what it is…..I think whatever way it goes, take it for what it is, enjoy it and embrace it and what will be, will be.

Simon Cowell has reportedly sacked Grace Woodward as stylist on The X Factor.
Britain & Ireland’s Next Top Model judge was in charge of styling and dressing all contestants on last year’s series of the ITV show, however after many complaints were received about her wacky outfit choices, the music mogul is said to have axed the bespectacled beauty from this year’s team.
Grace, who also fronts fashion show Chick Fix on Sky Living, was responsible for Katie Waissel’s helmet, Wagner’s tight pants and Matt Cardle’s garish yellow trousers, so we’re not that surprised that Cowell found her too edgy for his hit TV show.
A show source told The Mirror:
“Simon wasn’t always a fan of Grace’s styling and they’ve decided to look for someone else. The feeling was they wanted more of a household name.”

"Performing with a band is something I have always wanted. It has always been in my heart. I have an amazing opportunity because of The X Factor so I thought, 'Why not try to do it now?'" However, the singer-songwriter insisted that she doesn't want to use her name to gain the band attention, adding that (more...
