Margot Robbie is getting into the musical business!
The Oscar-nominated actress’ production company LuckyChap will be producing their first-ever stage musical in New York.
The Big Gay Jamboree is the new musical from Titanique creator Marla Mindelle. She co-wrote the book with Jonathan Parks-Ramage and co-wrote the music and lyrics with Philip Drennen.
The new show, billed as a “comedy trapped inside a musical,” centers on Stacey (Mindelle), who after blacking out from 18 Jägerbombs, wakes up hungover in the most terrifying place of all: an Off-Broadway musical. With no memory of how she got there, Stacey is forced to put her Bfa in theater to use, belt her face off, and figure out how the hell she’s gonna escape this 1940′s golden age musical…while a live audience watches.
LuckyChap commented, “We’ve been admiring Marla Mindelle’s work for quite some time and our adoration only grew when...

Marla Mindelle, who starred in and co-created the Off-Broadway hit Titanique, is debuting her new musical The Big Gay Jamboree Off-Broadway this fall.
The show is co-written by Mindelle and is described as a parody of musical theater itself. Sue Wagner, John Johnson, and Margot Robbie’s production company LuckyChap are serving as producers of the show.
In 2019, LuckyChap had announced a deal to produce the title as a movie musical for Paramount, however that has not yet materialized. Their involvement in the stage show marks LuckyChap’s first foray into theater.
The Big Gay Jamboree features a book by Mindelle and by Jonathan Parks-Ramage (author of Yes, Daddy), with music and lyrics by Mindelle and Philip Drennen and direction and choreography by Connor Gallagher (Beetlejuice on Broadway). The production describes it as a show that centers on Stacey, who wakes up hungover, “in the most terrifying place of all: an Off-Broadway musical.

The Outer Critics Circle (Occ), the official organization of writers on New York theatre for out-of-town newspapers and national publications, today announced the nominees for the 72nd Annual Outer Critics Circle Awards, honoring the 2022-2023 Broadway and Off-Broadway season.
“New York, New York” received a major backing from this announcement, which coincides with the production’s opening night. The new musical with songs from John Kander, the late Fred Ebb and Lin-Manuel Miranda earned a whopping 12 nominations, the most of any production. “Some Like it Hot” trails just behind it with 10 nominations. The most nominated plays of the season are the Off-Broadway sensation “Downstate” and Broadway epic “Leopoldstadt,” both with six nominations apiece.
This is the first season with newly reconstructed acting categories, which have removed gender specifications, and have been expanded to separately include off-Broadway performers. In the previous configuration, actors in Broadway and off-Broadway productions competed in the same category.

Ryan O’Connell’s series Special is a different kind of coming out story. In the Netflix comedy, O’Connell plays a version of himself. Both are named Ryan, both are gay and both have cerebral palsy. On top of all that, the TV-version Ryan doesn’t necessarily have to come out of the closet as gay — he has to come out of the cerebral palsy closet. And it just so happens that this is the same thing that happened to O’Connell. He stopped by the New Hollywood Podcast to let us know how true to life Special is to his own personal life. Turns out, it is quite close.
The 8-episode comedy is based on O’Connell’s book I’m Special: And Other Lies We Tell Ourselves and is produced by Jim Parsons and is further proof that authentic representation behind and in front of the camera...

If “Special” were any shorter, it could compete as a short-form series at the Emmys. Only two of its eight initial episodes run over 15 minutes (the TV Academy cut-off), and you can absorb the fun first season in less than two hours. A slight runtime is not a slight in quality — far from it. Some of last year’s best shows were short-form, and more freshman series (not just comedies) could benefit from focusing episodes to quarter-hour chunks. Its appealing length is also a sign of much-appreciated self-awareness, as “Special” needs some time to hone its delivery and find more storytelling confidence, but there’s more than enough in Ryan O’Connell’s new series to make it the right kind of notable.
Based on his own memoir, “I’m Special: And Other Lies We Tell Ourselves,” O’Connell plays Ryan Kayes, a gay man with cerebral palsy who’s still living with his mother,...

The protagonist of “Special” would probably hate how people are describing the (funny! smart!) TV show about his life as being about “a gay, disabled man.” In fact, when Ryan (creator Ryan O’Connell) gets hit by a car shortly before starting a new job in the pilot, and his new co-workers assume that the physical embodiment of his cerebral palsy is due to the accident, he’s downright thrilled. To him, this misunderstanding isn’t a mistake that needs a correcting so much as an incredible opportunity to start their impression of him from scratch. After a lifetime of condescension, he’s suddenly not “the guy with cerebral palsy” they need to pity, but just a fellow human being who got unlucky.
Of course, this being a sitcom, maintaining this lie isn’t nearly as simple as Ryan hoped. But throughout all the comic misunderstandings, “Special” keeps its feet firmly on the ground,...

Netflix has unveiled the trailer for “Special,” its upcoming series based on Ryan O’Connell’s memoir “I’m Special: And Other Lies We Tell Ourselves.” O’Connell also serves as creator, producer, and star of the show, which follows his journey as a gay man living with cerebral palsy — but not being entirely open about that disability. Avail yourself of the trailer below.
Per its synopsis, the series is based on “many of O’Connell’s real-life ups and downs growing up gay and disabled with cerebral palsy. When the rude curveball known as ‘his twenties’ happened, he was determined to take his life from bleak to chic and embrace everything that makes him exactly who he is. Why be normal when you can be…Special?”
In the show, Ryan leads his co-workers to believe that his disability is the result of being hit by a car and not something he was born with.

Prepare for your heart to go on and on again, Titanic fans. There's a musical parody of the classic movie — that is hands down the greatest film of all time and no one can tell me otherwise — coming to New York City and hear me out when I say Titanique is already life-changing. Seriously, if you can fire off quotes from the 1997 epic movie like it's nobody's business and have spent many hours of your life watching Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater fall in love despite knowing their romance sinks just like the Heart of the Ocean, this show is what your soul needs. And you can trust me, Titanic has been my go-to movie since I was like seven years old, so I'm basically an expert. Check out the video above to see a teaser trailer for Titanique. So here's the rundown: the hilarious concert tells the story...

Cinderella
If you have a little kid at home between the ages of a seven-year-old who can sit through a show and a fantasy-prone twelve-year-old, Cinderella might be the ticket to buy if you’re going for them. With a mediocre score from the legendary team of Rogers & Hammerstein and a contemporary book by Douglas Carter Beane, this musical is ideal for kids and perfectly tolerable for adults.
Though this production plods along with the story that everybody knows, there are moments of theatrical magic that might be lost on one not jumping to suspend disbelief, but will likely dazzle those who still think their uncle can pull a quarter out of his ear. Beane’s book seems geared at amusing the more mature audience members, but often tries too hard to be modern-day in its humor, detracting from the story while only paying off in moderate laughter.

Once upon a time, in the magical land of Broadway, an age-old fairy tale was reborn.
It came to life in The Broadway Theatre, where writer Douglas Carter Beane (Broadway's "Lysistrata Jones" and "Sister Act") revised the well-known story, modernizing it, though it's still set in some vaguely European 19th century village.
There's a little winking at the audience, without tipping into overly whimsical territory. Of course puppets turn into footmen, a fairy godmother flies and it is "Cinderella" -- but it's "Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella," which means a great score.
The beautiful orphan, Cinderella (Laura Osnes, Broadway's "Bonnie & Clyde" and "South Pacific") lives with her evil stepmother and not quite wicked enough stepsisters. There's the cute, though not dashing, prince with a social conscience.
After slaying a tree giant (think the talking trees in the "Wizard of Oz" but on Miracle-Gro) Prince Topher's (Santino Fontana, Broadway's "The Importance of...
