Exclusive: American rugby union is going under the doc series spotlight.
The sport’s North American professional league, Major League Rugby (Mlr), has struck a deal with indie film financier and producer Goldfinch to produce an all-access, multi-year series that’s been billed as an “unprecedented ten-year commitment.” This will chronicle the sport’s growth and development in the U.S.
Filming on the first season, Stars, Stripes and Scrums: The American Rugby Journey (working title) is underway and will focus on the Chicago Hounds team, while also exploring the sport at all levels across the States.
All-access sports team docs have been one of the big trends in unscripted over recent years, with international rugby union featured in Netflix’s Six Nations: Full Contact last year and the English league the subject of Prime Video’s Mud, Sweat and Tears: Premiership Rugby in October.

Ensemble study of film professionals struggling with enforced isolation features some good performances but doesn’t really come together
There are some heartfelt performances and vignettes in this debut feature from producer-turned-director Kirsty Bell and writers Elizabeth Morris and Dominic Wells – and certainly some lustrous monochrome images from cinematographer Sergio Delgado. But this lockdown ensemble piece about a movie production stymied by Covid is self-conscious and doesn’t really come together, and the tonal shifts can be a little uncomfortable.
Camilla Rutherford plays Rebecca, an actor who gives a great performance in a film shoot that wraps just before the coronavirus restrictions land, but then succumbs to depression due to loneliness, unemployment and suspicion that this film will never see the light of day. Meanwhile kindly fellow actor David (Derek Jacobi) is all alone in his south of France villa and facing problems of his own. Editor Lucy (Morgana Robinson...

The U.K. production boom, while good news for crews (and audiences), has not necessarily proved a boon for independent filmmakers.
Largely generated by the streamer wars, film and high-end television production spend in the U.K. hit 7.6 billion in 2021. A closer look at the figures, however, revealed that the majority of that spend was on high-end TV production, which had nearly doubled compared to 2019, while expenditure on film grew only by 3.
Worse, the boom has created a scarcity of resources, from crew and soundstages to generators and actors (one agent even told Variety productions were struggling to find Winnebagos to accommodate their clients on set). The scarcity has in turn pushed up prices. It’s another blow to already small margins on independent films, on top of Covid safety measures, low cinema attendance and general inflation, which has turned even the price of fuel into an additional financial burden.

After scouring a handful of locations, U.K.-based Msr Media producer Philippe Martinez has landed on the Caribbean island of Nevis to shoot six films back-to-back. With the pandemic still wreaking havoc in many countries, Nevis Island ticked all the boxes where stringent protocols have rendered few cases and no deaths. “One has to think outside the box when you’re a producer; we decided to shoot in the Caribbean when we saw that the pandemic was not abating,” said Martinez, who despite Covid restrictions, shot two films in the U.K.: “Father Christmas Is Back,” which he directed and produced, starring Liz Hurley, Kelsey Grammer and John Cleese, and “Miss Willoughby and the Haunted Bookshop,” with Nathalie Cox and Grammer.
“We closed the country down on March 25 and opened our borders on Oct. 31, but with some restrictions still in place,” noted Jadine Yarde, CEO, Nevis Tourism Authority.

Gary Oldman and Jessica Alba are set to star in Goldfinch Studios’ Martin Owen-directed thriller Killers Anonymous.
The Darkest Hour actor and Sin City star are fronting the feature, which has just started filming in London. The studio said it marks Oldman’s first role since winning an Oscar as Winston Churchill in Joe Wright’s drama.
Killers Anonymous explores a world that exists beneath the day to day, the restraint and order. For every life there is a death, and for every person there is an itch that only the few scratch; the dark voice that tells people to blow out the flame of another’s life. You might walk down a street and brush shoulders with a stranger and exchange a polite smile, completely unaware that stranger is picturing themselves stood above your bleeding body as you draw your final breath. There is a place for those people.

Animation feature “Bombay Rose” is the first film to flow from a new partnership between the U.K.’s Goldfinch Entertainment and India’s Cinestaan Film Co.
“Bombay Rose” is directed by Gitanjali Rao and is inspired by the romance of Bollywood. While there are multiple human stories, arguably the biggest star is the seedy underbelly of Mumbai.
The film was previously greenlit by Cinestaan and France’s Les Films d’Ici. Goldfinch is to invest in the production and provide the music through Goldfinch Music. Lilian Kibedi’s new production and finance company, Akoberwa Films, also joins the picture as another financing partner.
Cinestaan, which has bases in Mumbai, London and Los Angeles, bills itself as India’s largest independent producer. It has two production pipelines, one focusing on the Indian domestic and diaspora audiences, the other for international audiences. It is also in production on “The Torch,” a feature documentary co-produced with IFC,...

Goldfinch Studios’ exec-producing and finance arm Goldfinch Entertainment will oversee the new strategic alliance on behalf of the U.K.-based company.
